One of my favorite memories from childhood was making homemade ice cream. We had one of those old cranky style ice cream makers....It was so wonderful! (Later we also got a electric ice cream maker, but it always tasted better when cranked by hand!) I have wanted to buy a ice cream maker for years. But, I have never been able to find a crank one so I never bought one. Earlier this Summer I saw this cool ice cream ball at Wal-Mart...Well it finally went on clearance...so I bought one! Here is how it works:
Mix cream, sugar and vanilla together.

In one end you add ice and rock salt. This will make the ice and salt surround the cylinder the ice cream is made in.

If you are a little nutty you will taste the rock salt!

Next you pour the ice cream mixture into the other end of the ball. This end is a aluminum tube that somes in contact with the ice surrounding it.

Then you ROLL!

And roll ....

And roll for 20 minutes!
(Notice the dog hiding under the table. He DID NOT like this one bit!) ICE CREAM!!! Worked like a charm!

Enjoying the fruits of their labor!

The extra kiddo in the pictures is my nephew who is here visiting. I think he's pretty sure we are a little nuts! LOL I asked him if he had made ice cream before and he looked at me, kinda raised his eyebrows and said "We just buy ice cream at the store!" (I think he wasn't sure I knew they sold ice cream at the store! LOL)
BTW, you can do the same basic thing in a coffee can or ziploc baggies. Here are the instructions.
