I was cleaning up my blog this weekend and I came across this post I had written back in May that I had never posted. So here it is 7 months later! LOL
One of my subscribers sent me a link to an article called The Baby IS the Lesson in response to my post on Deschooling. She thought is would be good to pass along to the Mom who had written me. After reading th article I couldn't agree more! What a great article.
Reading this made me reminisce a bit about back when we had little babies in our homeschool. From the start of homeschooling I decided that home came first in homeschooling for a reason. We are a family first and a school second. So for the most part I tried not to stress out about school when I had little babies in the house. HOWEVER, there were more than a few times that I blew it!
Here is one of my favorites. When was pregnant with #3 and my oldest was 9. It was a really easy pregnancy except for one thing. From 1:00 to 3:00 every afternoon I HAD to sleep! LOL No matter how I tried to avoid it 1:00 would come and I would just pass out! So one day I get a phone call from my sons Bible Study teacher. He says that he knows this might sound weird but he is calling to tell me I need to buy a new box to store our math manipulatives in. I am confused? What is he talking about?? He goes on to tell me that he asked my son how school was going and my son informed him that everything was fine except for math. When he asked him why he replied "Well, I can't get the lid off the manipulatives and by time I do Math everyday my Mom is asleep." ROFL!!!!
Luckily his teacher had himself been homeschooled! So he knew what was going on. We had a good laugh about it and I thanked him for the call. When I asked my son why he had never told me this he replied "Well, you never asked I only think about it when your asleep. I'm not about to wake you up! You would yell at me."
We have many the funny stories from when we had babies in the house and MOST of them involve me falling asleep! LOL But the point is my kids learned that the family came before school. They have still learned what they need to know, but they have also learned compassion and patience along the way. Those things are a lot harder to teach than Math!
While I am on the topic of babies here are the lyrics to a song we have one tape that we all loved when my youngest was a baby.
His Majesty The Baby
By: Norman Foote
It's 5 o'clock the afternoon is gone.
And all is quiet, all the shades are drawn...
We're walking on tiptoes. cause everybody knows,
He's not to be disturbed,
NOT a single word.
So hush, be quiet,
Won't you please be quiet.
We live at his command and kiss the gentle hand
Of his majesty, the baby.
Look, he knows me!
See the smile he shows me.
You may announce him now, let everybody bow,
To his majesty, the baby.
The ladies stand in waiting,
"Here comes the king, make way!"
They all stand there debating,
"What will his highness say?"
Look, he's waking.
Hear the sounds he's making?
You may announce him now.
Everybody bow,
To his majesty, the baby.
We live at his command and kiss the gentle hand of his majesty, the baby.
