Mom, I LOVE Algebra!
My 14 year old told me he loves Algebra!  I don't know if I have ever heard more beautiful words!  LOL

Here is the thing. As I have confessed here before, I STINK at Math!  I struggled through math all the way up to 9th grade.  I then took General Math to get my 1 and only credit I needed for Math to graduate (Pathetic huh?) and I decided a math career was NOT for me!  LOL  (Then I proceeded to go on and work in Accounting with pretty much every job I ever had!  hehehe)  Anyway, as I have confessed before the only thing that ever worried me about homeschooling was teaching Math.  However, my husband is a math wiz, so I figured at some point the would take over.

Enter Math-U-See.  When my oldest was in 2nd grade we were completely blessed to find Math-U-See! This amazing program with it's video teacher has allowed me to teach my son Math all the way through the 8th grade.  I know it may not sound like much, but I can honestly say I have been learning along side him since about 6th grade and last year I lost all hope of understanding what he was doing.

So this summer I was dragging my feet on ordering his Math.  It wasn't like I had another plan, but I really didn't want my husband to have to be teaching him Math at 8:00 every night after dinner.  So I just kept putting off ordering Math.

When my rent-a-kid came to visit he mentioned he was going to do something called Teaching Textbooks this year for Math.  At first I must confess I was a little sad.  I had gotten him using MUS a few years back and I pride myself on converting people to MUS!  LOL  Then a few days later a friend of mine called and told me she too was using Teaching Texbook this year for her older kids!  Okay, I am thinking at this point maybe God wants me to look into Teaching Textbook!

So I did!  What I found is a program that is very similar to MUS, with one big exception.  It literally teaches them every problem in the book with a teacher on CD-rom!  Here is how it works.

  1. He reads the days assignment.
  2. He watches brief instructional video for the day.
  3. He does the workbook pages.
  4. He checks his answers
  5. He goes in and watches a lesson on each one that he missed!
  6. He corrects anything he got wrong.

WOW! There are over 3000 video instructions on the CD for Algebra 1!

So he started it this week and he LOVES it!  YAY!!!

I am just amazed that I got him to this point!  Yes, he has passed me up!  But, isn't that what we should want for our kids?  For them to do better than we did?  I pray all my kids have their father's Math brain!  But, I have to tell you I am a little bit proud of my accomplishment of getting him this far!  I mean I am the only Math Teacher he has EVER had!  WOW! I am a whole lot thankful for Math-U-See and now for Teaching Textbook.

If you have an older child ready for higher Math I recommend you check out teaching textbook.  My heart is still tightly wrapped around Math-U-See for the lower grades.  And if you have more knowledge of Math than I have I am sure MUS will work great all the way through.

It is just so great to have options.  And it's also great to hear those magic words....Mom, I LOVE Algebra!

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

P.S.

I had the following email from a reader:

I'm about to order math for my six year old who still doesn't like a lot of structure.  I was going to order math u see.  Would you still recommend it even though you LOVE this new teaching textbooks curriculum?

My Answer:

Oh my YES I enthusiastically endorse Math-U See!  I plan on using it with my 2 youngest kiddos as long as possible.  I just think that for us, for high school TTB is a better choice because of my inadequacy in math!

Go for it! ORDER MUS!  I better go put a correction on my blog, I don't want to scare anyone away from MUS, IT IS WONDERFUL!!!!!! (Also, TT is not currently being offered for lower grades.  I think it starts with 6th grade right now.)

Just wondering--is there any reason you didn't want to continue with MUS for algebra and beyond? I was planning to do MUS all the way through. TT doesn't offer materials for Macs, I don't think. I can't use a company whose materials aren't for Mac users. LOL

From one math-phobic accountant to another. I often tell people that Accounting is not "math" but I think they think I'm weird. I mean, it's NORMAL math. I can do that. lol

I got Teaching Textbooks for Paige last year and she loved it. This year both she and Skylar are doing it. It's spendy but worth every penny. I see them both going quite a way in math with this program. Probably one of my favorite homeschooling resources.

Thanks for telling us about the teaching text books. We are currently doing Mathusee and I LOVE it but my oldest son,age 12, is needing something else. So as soon as we finish up his mathusee book we'll be buying a teaching textbook. I have heard about them but never checked into them. besides they were supposed to be really expensive. I was surprised at the price. Not too bad. And besides for math I would pay all I could to get my kids past where I was when I graduated. I took Pre-algebra 3x before I BARELY passed. So you can say that I am Math challanged. I think this is EXACTLY what we were looking for. Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up, these programs looks great. One concern for my husband and I when we started homeschooling was and still is math, b/c we are both not strong in that subject!
