Here is a list of ideas of ways to observe September 11th with your children.
Have the kids make cards or treats and take them to a fire department or police department to tell them thanks for being heros!
Spend time at church or home praying for our country, military and for the families that lost loved ones in the attacks.
Go to a local cemetery that has a veterans memorial and spend time talking and praying for our country, military and the families of the 9/11 victims.
Get together a group of homeschoolers and to to a nursing home and sing patriots songs to the residents. (They enjoy visitors all year long!)
Go fly a kite! Just a reminder of the world according to Osama bin Laden’s... “Instead of just searching for criminals, the night patrols were instructed to seek out people watching videos, playing cards or, bizarrely, keeping caged birds. Men without long enough beards were to be arrested, as was any woman who dared venture outside her house. Even owning a kite became a criminal offence.”
Thank you for the great ideas. We will be at the fire station (where "Daddy" works) and have lunch with the fire fighters. Hung our flag and taught "America" to the kids. Over the next few weeks, we will learn the different military songs. I got the idea from the opening ceremonies of the fire fighter's convention. Thank you again.
Don;t for get about the military that is keeping us safe today. You could send a letter to a soldier. If you don't know a soldier over seas then find a unit that is over there and write a letter to the Chaplin or the Company Commander. He will givet the letters to soldier that do not have family or do not get letters. You can also send him a box to share with his soldiers.
I know you have such a wide resource in terms of the net. I wanted to ask if you knew of any books and/or websites that would be fun and appropriate to teach bits of history to a 5 yo.
We have homeschooled our children from the start and we love every minute of it! This is my place to share my thoughts on homeschooling, my kids and living for the Lord. All the while being a little outside the box!!
