My daughter finished her 3rd Awana Sparkies book last Sunday! This means that she has finished all 3 Sparkie books in 3 years and will win a award called the Sparkie Award. By completing this book she has memorized 146 Bible verses in the last 3 years!
I wish I could say that she accomplished this because of the loving support of her Mother. But, sadly that is not the case. Yep, I was "me of little faith!' You see, my oldest son earned the Sparkie Award many moons ago when he was in 2nd grade. With him I did help and encourage him along the way. Each child that earns a Sparkie Award receives a beautiful wood plaque. My daughters whole life she has admired the plaque her brother earned and wanted to get one herself! I would have never doubted that she could do it except for one thing. Last year when we moved she missed 5 months of Awana. That is nearly a fourth of the months that comprise the 3 years she had to finish all the books. To me it looked hopeless! At the beginning of this year she was just starting book 2. I hate to say it, but I never encouraged her. I didn't want her to be let down. So I was the cheerleader for her NOT finishing! All year I have told her that it wasn't her fault that we moved and she missed those months. That I know she could have done it if she had enough time. That no one expected her to get all 3 books done, etc., etc.
Thankfully she ignored me! Each week she would happily tell me how many verses she passed that week. Ten to twelve per week was not uncommon! I even thought a few times what a shame it was that she had worked so hard and she still wouldn't finish in time! LOL
Well, our little "go getter" showed me! Not only did she finish 2 books this year, but she did it with 1 week of Awana to spare! Wow, there so many lessons learned here that I should have already known! It only seems appropriate that I tell you what they are using a few Bible verses!
Matthew 19:13-14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
Psalms 37:4 Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give me the desires of my heart.
Proverbs 20:11 Even a child is known by his deeds, By whether what he does is pure and right.
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.
Needless to say I am proud beyond words of my daughter! Once again the teacher becomes the student!
Happy Homeschooling,
Jamin

Congratulations to your daughter for this great acomplishment.
I'm a 23 yo girl and I must confess that just last summer I started to really read the bible for the first time, I realized that memorizing verses makes me feel better and I've been trying to find like a list of verses I should memorize and I guessed a kid's list would be a good place to start so I started looking on the internet but I haven't got many luck so I'm going to take a big chance, because i don't want to be rude, and ask for your help to find some sort of guidence or recomendations on this?
I would really apreciate it but I understand you may not have the time nor is your obligation so feel free to ignore my request =D
Thank you very much in advance and my apologizes for taking up your time and for my grammar mistakes English is not my first language.
So proud of your daughter! My son was awarded his last night. He started AWANA in first grade so he had to do the first two books in one year, which he did, as well as reviewing the 2nd book! Then this year he did the third book, reviewed it and did a workbook. I am SO proud of him. He even got to be the flag bearer last night at the ceremony.
Wow... that's a great achievement. My children are required to memorize scripture as part of their curriculum ... I don't think I praise them enough for doing it...just took it for granted. Thanks for the reminder.
We have homeschooled our children from the start and we love every minute of it! This is my place to share my thoughts on homeschooling, my kids and living for the Lord. All the while being a little outside the box!!
