Posted in My Homeschool FAQs
We'll, here goes my 1st blog entry ever! So I guess the 1st place to start is with a few words about who I am. I am a homeschooling Mom of 3 kids ages 11, 4 & 2. I first decided to homeschool in 1983, 11 years before I had my 1st child. It was the year I graduated highschool and the 1st time I ever heard of homeschooling. There was some news story on TV about parents who chose to school their children at home. I decided at that very moment that was what I wanted to do when I had children. Six years later when my husband and I married I still had the idea tucked away in the back of my mind. Unfortunately children didn't come easy for us, but finally 6 1/2 years later our 1st miracle was born. This was the first time I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to homeschool. He thought I was crazy! (This happens frequently!)
So, I let the subject drop figuring I had a few years to convince him. Well, those years passed quickly and before I knew it all our sons playmates from parkday where disappearing into preschools! Suddenly I realized it was time to take action. Luckily by this time I had made a few friends who homeschooled, so I took my 3-year-old and joined our local homeschool group. I felt a little odd joining a homeschool group without a school aged child, but now in retrospect I realize that was the best decision I could have made. By the time our son was 6 (The age we had to make a decision about school.) we were so involved in the homeschool world that homeschooling somehow seemed "normal" and we never considered any other route of education other than homeschooling!
So here we are 9 years later. Since then we have added 2 more miracles to our family. (Ages 2 & 4) Homeschooling is a lot different now with 2 little ones to chase after. When we started out with only 1 child our homeschool looked a lot like a traditional school. Our son wanted a desk, and workbooks and somedays we even said the flag salute! LOL
Now, we have come full circle. Somedays it would be hard for the untrained eye to tell there was any educating going on in our house! Not that we are unschoolers or anything, I’ve just relaxed, a lot! We use a curriculum, Sonlight. We LOVE Sonlight. Right now we are taking a break from it though to go through the Story of the World series. We should finish them the by the end of February. Then we will begin Sonlight Core 7. Well, more later on our homeschooling journey.....
