Tonight is our first of American Girl Club for the new school year! For the first 6 weeks we will be doing the Josefina books. For our first craft we will be making a Rebozo. These are the loosely woven shawls worn by women in New Mexico in the early 1800's. (And all over Spain and Mexico.) They are used for sun shade, warmth and even to carry babies or products to and from the market!
Here is my daughter modeling a Rebozo. This is actually mine. She will make hers tonight with the other girls. Of course she needed a skirt and top too! We haven't made her moccasins (yet), I love seeing her little bare feet peeking out from under her dress!
To make the Rebozo's I will provide each girl 2 1/2 yards by 2 feet of loosely woven fabric. Then the girls will work on unraveling the edges to make fringe. Once they have it unraveled they can braid and knot the fringe however they chose. (They probably won't get all the braiding and knotting done at club. But, they can take them home and work on them as they have time.)
We will also be making corn tortillas, learning about weaving, and learning some fandango dance steps tonight!
I can hardly wait!
Oh, and did you know that the Josefina books are set in a real place in New Mexico? You can visit the Rancho de las Golondrinas website HERE and even schedule a Josefina tour! You will also find awesome pictures of the Rancho at About.com. (Unfortunatley there are lots of ads on the sidebar for tummy flatening and tooth whitening that I find quite distracting. But I have been know to stick a post it note over that side of my screen so we can look at the good pictures without seeing all the ads.) So with all those warnings in place you can click HERE to see the lovely virtual tour of the Rancho on About.com. :^)
Happy Homeschooling,

I love the idea of your American Girl's Club. I'm a homeschooling Mum of 4 here in England and just wanted to say the love for your family shines through on your blog.
Kind Regards,
Mandy.
Just to add that rebozzo are still used in south america to carry anything that need to be carried, even babies. Women can wear up to 3 rebozzo full at the same time. and it is amazing to see how they carry their baby in it!!
have fun with american girl!!
We have homeschooled our children from the start and we love every minute of it! This is my place to share my thoughts on homeschooling, my kids and living for the Lord. All the while being a little outside the box!!
