Tonight is our first of American Girl Club for the new school year! For the first 6 weeks we will be doing the Josefina books. For our first craft we will be making a Rebozo. These are the loosely woven shawls worn by women in New Mexico in the early 1800's. (And all over Spain and Mexico.) They are used for sun shade, warmth and even to carry babies or products to and from the market!
Here is my daughter modeling a Rebozo. This is actually mine. She will make hers tonight with the other girls. Of course she needed a skirt and top too! We haven't made her moccasins (yet), I love seeing her little bare feet peeking out from under her dress!
To make the Rebozo's I will provide each girl 2 1/2 yards by 2 feet of loosely woven fabric. Then the girls will work on unraveling the edges to make fringe. Once they have it unraveled they can braid and knot the fringe however they chose. (They probably won't get all the braiding and knotting done at club. But, they can take them home and work on them as they have time.)
We will also be making corn tortillas, learning about weaving, and learning some fandango dance steps tonight!
I can hardly wait!

Just to add that rebozzo are still used in south america to carry anything that need to be carried, even babies. Women can wear up to 3 rebozzo full at the same time. and it is amazing to see how they carry their baby in it!!
