Posted in Lessons I Have Learned
This hymn has traditionally been ranked as one of the most popular hymns ever written. It is certainly one of the best-known in the English language.
Wow! This has gotten me thinking about how quickly one generation moves on and forgets the ones before them. I think even of my own Father who died before my oldest was 2. My 2 younger children never met him and my oldest obviously doesn't remember him. Yet, they are effected by him every day! There is a lot of my Dad in me. He (& my Mom) taught me about how to have a successful marriage and be a good parent. They taught me about loving the Lord. He taught me so much by just being the quiet, faithful man that he was. He would have given the shirt off his back to help another. But my kids don't know these things. Hopefully they see many of the same qualities in me. Hopefully I will pass these qualities on to my children.
When my oldest child was a week old I wrote this poem for him...
When
When I look into your eyes...
I see the faces of generations past,
People I never met and yet are a
Part of me and your daddy
And now you.
When I look into your eyes...
I see faces of generation yet to come,
My grandchildren and great-grandchildren
And generations I will never live to know.
Yet they will be effected by me and your daddy
And you!
When I look into your eyes...
I see hope for the future,
and sense in the past.
I see answers to all my questions
And the realization of all my hopes.
I see that God's plan is perfect!
When I look into your eyes...
The world suddenly makes sense,
And the wait for you seems so worthwhile.
You are only one week old
Yet you have shown me the secrects of the Universe.
I love you my precious newborn son!

How many times have I sung the hymn Rock of Ages and never realized the
composer was a ancestor of my husband & children? What is the
lesson I can learn from all this? I think the point I am trying
to make is that it is important that I raise my children to pass along
the things I value. I won't be here forever, but the lessons I
teach my children will. It is unlikely that I will compose a hymn
that people will be singing a hundred years from now, but maybe I will
raise children who will pass along my love for the Lord and a hundred
years from now that heritage will continue to be passed on.
A few days ago I came across a blog encouraging
HSB bloggers to take off Monday, March 13th to spend time with our
children. This is an opportunity to share things we would like our kids
to know about our lives as a memorial to Missey Grey HSB blogger who
passed away last week. My family will be joining in on this
Monday and I encourage anyone who reads this to do this also. Our time
here on Earth is short, but our impact through our children can be
great!
For Jehovah is good; his lovingkindness endureth for ever, And his faithfulness unto all generations. Psalms 100:5
Rock of Ages
Verse 1
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save from wrath and make me pure.
Verse 2
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked come to Thee for dress,
Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul I to the fountain fly,
Wash me Savior or I die.
Verse 3
Not the labor of my hands,
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save and Thou alone.
Verse 4
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyes shall close in death,
When I rise to worlds unknown,
And behold Thee on Thy throne,
Rock of Ages cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
Verse 5
Could my tears forever flow?
Could my zeal no languor know?
These for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
In my hand no price I bring;
Simply to thy cross I cling.
