My little ones love puppets!  We have a big bin of them and I just love to sit and listen to them playing with the puppets and using their imaginations.  This summer I thought they would enjoy making some of their own puppets, so I went out looking for free patterns. I found an awesome website!

This site has over 40 links to patterns and instructions!  You will find information and free printables to make paper bag puppets, sock puppets, hand puppets, stick puppets, finger puppets, shadow puppets and even marionettes!

I cannot wait to get started making these with my kids!  I hope you and your children enjoy them too!

Freebie Friday - 5-2-08 Mother's Day

Posted in Freebies

Welcome to Freebie Fridays

Mother's Day is a week from Sunday. Since most of us are Teacher and Mom, here are some freebie's for your students to make YOU for Mother's Day!

Here is a great card your kids can make.  This card will be a lovely keepsake.  There are pull out cards where the kids can write a list of the things Mom does for them.  Then, there are three other pull outs (That spell out M-O-M) for your kids to write things they appreciate about you. (If you happen to have 3 kids like I do, then each child can write you a special message.)

Here are some free Mother's Day Coupons for you to print and your kids to fill in. These not only make a great gift for Mom, but they get some handwriting practice in, too!

This website has a lot of great Mother's Day crafts.  There are a bunch of fun ideas like Oatmeal Soap on a Rope, Candy Roses or Handprint Magnets. Spend some time looking at this site, and you are sure to find something great to make with your kids!  (These would make great gifts for Grandma, too!)

Lastly, check out the side bar to get a free book from Gospel for Asia.  This book will bring you a radical life changing message! Don't miss out on this exciting free offer!

I hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day!

I'll see you next week right here at - Freebie Fridays!

HWTB - 3-28-08 - Free Printable Bible Lessons

Posted in Freebies

WOW!  Every once in awhile I come across a website and I think "Is this really all free?"  This is one of those sites!  Edgezonegames.com offers 325 Bible Lessons and Activities!  The information is sorted by Old and New Testament and then is in order by books of the Bible.  I was looking for lessons on Esther and they were so easy to find because all I had to do is go to where the book of Esther is in the Bible and viola! From Genesis through Revelations all the major stories of the Bible are represented here!

For each of the Bible stories there is a free pdf.  The pdf has coloring sheets, worksheets, crosswords, mazes, word searches, and MORE!  These are great to make a whole lesson around, or you could use them for filler work while you are splitting your time between children.  I can also see myself printing and using these in Awana, Sunday School and Bible Studies I teach in the future.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I am!  HERE is the link.

Happy Homeschooling,

Jamin

UPDATE:  A reader let me know that Calvary Chapel is the creator of these and they also offer this FREE on CD.  I noticed on their website that coming soon all these pdf's will also be offered in Spanish. :^)

Welcome to Freebie Fridays!

A few weeks ago I had an email with a request for more freebies for teens. So this week, we are going to start off with a couple of freebies for teenagers.

Cardamom Publishing is offering a free lesson from their book Life Prep for Teens.  This free lesson plan will lead your teen through the car buying process.  You will find it HERE.  Whether your teen has the money to buy a car or not this is great information for when they are ready.

Also for teens, HERE is a free online copy of the book Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the 1920's.  This book was written in 1931 and continues to be a vivid and precise account of the volatile stock market and the boom years of the 1920's. This looks like a fun way to learn about this interesting period of History.

Next, I have something for the whole family. (Including teenagers)! Homeschoolbuyersco-op.org has a wonderful free resource for finding field trips in the United States and Canada. You will find museums, zoos, aquariums, historic houses, nature centers, cultural centers and other educational opportunities in your area.  You can check it out HERE.

Little Dozen Press is holding a writing contest for homeschooled kids to share their family stories.  Kids from 8 to 18 can submit their funny, dramatic or touching stories. Four winners will receive an autographed copy of Tales of the Heartily Homeschooled.  The deadline is May 1st.  You can learn all about it HERE

Make sure to check out the unbelievable contest on the Company Porch.  Salem Ridge Press is giving away  prizes for 50 winners!  You can learn all about it HERE.

Lastly, make sure to vote for your favorite homeschool products.  You will get 2 free gifts just for voting!  Click HERE to vote.

Freebie Friday 3-21-08 - Sylvan Dell

Posted in Freebies

Welcome to Freebie Fridays!

I have some great freebies this week brought to you from one of the new vendors in the Schoolhouse Store.  Sylvan Dell Publishing has recently added over 50 new children's books to the store.   These are colorful, fun, educational picture books designed to excite children's imaginations.  They are artistically spectacular and have great educational value. The books start with fun, warm stories-generally fiction with science, math or nature themes-and are brought to life by art.  Along with the books they also offer a bunch of great freebies.

The first freebie they offer is a MP3 version of their books you can listen to absolutely free!  Once you have listened to the book online there are teaching activities to go along with the stories. If that isn't enough they also have crafts to go along with the stories, learning links and comprehension quizzes.

Also make sure to check out the Creative Minds section to find activities and educational information which relate to and reinforce the primary subjects of each title.  They even offer some of these studies in Spanish! There are so many great items on this website you can put together a whole study on a multitude of topics, all for free!

Here is one last fun thing from Sylvan Dell.  Right now they are holding the 2008 Picture Book Writing Competition for Homeschooled Students.  Your students manuscripts must be submitted by March 31st.  You have 10 days before the deadline!  You can read all about it HERE.

By the way, today is the last day of the March Madness Sale at the Schoolhouse Store.  You will find items on sale for up to 80% off!  Make sure to stop by and take a look.

We have another great contest happening over at the Company Porch. Make sure to stop by and enter the latest contest.  They are giving away a free set of My-Word-Magnets from Kidtronic.  These look like a lot of fun!

Lastly, Sunday is Easter.  I hope that each of you will spend time reflecting on the gift we received through the resurrection of Jesus!  If you want to read all about why Easter falls so early this year make sure to stop by the Classical Astronomy website to learn all about it!

I bet you all thought this one would stump me!  LOL

How about some free online field trips?

Museums on the Web is a great place to start if you are looking for online field trips. You will find a ton of resources sorted by Art, Science, History, Natural History and Miscellaneous. The site has an information key to help you know what to expect from the sites before you start clicking.

Virtual-Field-Trips.com has a huge selection of online tours. Their categories include Art, Geography, History, Just For Fun, Literature and Language, Math, Music and Science. The site includes a complete educational package with objectives, lesson plans, questions and answers, additional activities and sites to visit. With this site you can even visit places you have never imagined going . . . like the inside of the human body!

Have fun exploring. In my opinion a homeschooler can never go on too many field trips!

Freebie Friday - Feb 29, 2008

Posted in Freebies

Welcome to Freebie Fridays!

This week I am going to start out with a few follow up items to last week's Election focus.

I found a great website called Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids.  This site
provides learning tools for kids grade K-12, parents, and teachers. These resources will teach how our government works.  So whether your little ones are just ready for the ABC's of Government or you want to teach older kids about Citizenship, this site has a ton of free information.  There is something for everyone!  Make sure to check out the section on the Election Process

Next, thanks to one of our Freebie Friday readers, here are some great Election Notebooking Pages.  This great freebie includes pages to do research about the Candidates, information to learn about Primaries and Caucuses and there is even information on Political Advertising.  There are 3 pdf's to download at the website.  Make sure you get them all!  If you have any trouble getting to the site save this email and return later. Sometimes we overwhelm servers when we all rush to get downloads at once.

Now, for a little something from me!  My 7 year old daughter and I have been using the American Girl books as a jumping off point for American History this year.  Together we designed a free American Girl Lapbook.  This lapbook can be used with any of the American Girl books.  There are some basic mini books that will fit any of the time periods and then there are some booklets that are designed just for each girl.  We had a blast making it and we hope you enjoy it too.  You will find the free mini books HERE

This one is not so much a freebie, but a contest!  Bunkhouse Sewing is sponsoring a Children's Sewing Contest. You can find all the details HERE.

I'll see you next week right here at - Freebie Fridays!

HWTB 2-22-08 - Freebie Finder - Education Is...

Posted in Freebies

I recently came across a wonderful, free, Charlotte Mason-based E-Book, titled Education Is An Atmosphere, A Discipline, A Life I love this book so much!  It agrees completely with my philosophy that education is more than reading, writing and math and focuses on the training as well as the importance of parents in the education of children.

I especially like the chapter called
Are You a Thermostat or a Thermometer?
It discusses whether we are setting the direction of learning for our children or just reacting to what is happening around us.  (Not a question I want to answer every day!)

This E-Book offers many good things to think about.  Plus, you’ll find practical ideas to help you implement
these concepts in your home.

You will find the free download
HERE.

FF - 2-22-08 - Elections

Posted in Freebies

It seems that all I hear about these days is elections, so I thought it would be a good time to find some freebies to help us teach our kids about the election process.  Here is what I found.

The first resource is a great free 12 week unit study on Presidents and Elections.  This unit is designed to give primary-aged students an introduction to the office of the President and the election process.

Smithsonian in Your Classroom offers a free study called Winning the Vote: How Americans Elect Their President. This free download is designed for children grades 4-9 and covers Art, Geography, Language Arts, and Social Studies.

Homeschoolshare.com has a free Elections Lapbook!  This could be used on its own or in conjunction with either of the studies above.

Make sure to check out the latest contest in the Schoolhouse Store.  The race is on to be the 30,000th customer!  The prizes are bigger and better than ever!  You could win a gift pack worth over $800.00! The details are all HERE.

Freebie Friday 2-8-08 Valentines

Posted in Freebies

Welcome to Freebie Fridays!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  So, I thought I would bring you some Valentine's related freebies.

First off, I just love these Valentine Notebooking pages, brought to you from the folks over at notebookingpages.com.  They have a whole section of free notebooking goodies at their website! You will find printables for Art, Bible, Geography, Science and more here.

Next, how about some free sites to teach your kids about the human heart?  Let's Hear About Your Heart is an interactive, fun way to learn all about the heart  and how to take care of it. All About the Heart is true to its name.  It even has a cool little animation that shows how blood pumps through the heart.

Papervalentines.com has every imaginable idea for making your own valentines.  If it can be made out of paper, I am thinking you can find the pattern at this site.

We still have plenty of the Valentine's gift packages available with your purchase of a new two-year US subscription + Winter. Why not treat yourself to a two year subscription to TOS and also get a FREE CD from Steve Sensenig and tealight candles from Homestead Originals? See details here.

I'll see you next week right here at - Freebie Fridays!

I find that the more my kids are exposed to good literature the more likely they are to write. The more books I read to my kids the more they understand about writing. We have had a lot of fun through the years by reading a book and then writing a story in same style. After reading Black Beauty, my  son (then in 3rd grade) wrote a story in similar style, from the perspective of our dog. This was one of my favorites! If I had tried to explain to him that I wanted him to write a story in the voice of an animal he may not have really understood what I meant, but after hearing the story of Black Beauty he had no trouble understanding the concept. Without much effort, he wrote a great story!

Here is a site I came across recently that we are just loving! librivox.org records public domain books and releases the audio files on the Internet. My kids and I have been having a great time listening to these classic books. Here are some of the titles we have on our reading list:

Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz by L. Frank Baum

The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

There are over 1100 titles to choose from! You can browse the whole catalog HERE.

In case you missed the great free e-Book we offered recently in Freebie Friday, make sure to stop by and download your free copy of Special Report - Teach Your Children to Write from Cardamom Publishers. This little e-Book is packed with great ideas and advice to get your children writing! You will find the free e-Book HERE.

I wanted to let everyone know that the link for Spelling City in today's newsletter is correct. http://www.spellingcity.com However, apparently we have crashed their server!

Please be patient. You should be able to access the website within the next few days. We have a large number of subscribers on this list and with everyone clicking at once we have overwhelmed them.

Meanwhile here are a few other spelling sites we will hopefully NOT crash!  LOL
