For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Saint Patrick's Day In Review

Posted in My Kids

Even though I completely forgot about St. Patrick's Day we still managed a quick study yesterday.

We started the day by reading The Story of St. Patrick.  Then we made some green pancakes.  After breakfast we worked on some craft and worksheets I got from the free pdf I posted about yesterday.  The kids really liked making the crafts!  While we worked we talked a lot about St. Patrick's Day.  The kids recounted the whole story that they learned form the Veggie Tales movie.  I talked with them about the trinity and how St. Patrick used the 3 leaf clover to teach people about the trinity.  We also talked about the Irish Potato Famine while we made potato puppets. We discussed Missionaries too and how important it is to spread the Word of God where ever we can.

Here are some pictures from our day:

All 3 kiddos in their silly hats!

Showing off his crafts.

This might be the most crafts we have ever done in one day!  LOL The kids really liked it.  They probably wish I was more disorganized more often!
Notice my daughters Leprechan is a girl!  LOL  We cut off the beard to girl her hair instead.  Then she got some stylin' pink boots!

May the wisdom of God instruct me;
The eye of God watch over me;
The ear of God hear me;
The Word of God give sweetness to my speech;
The hand of God defend me;
And may I follow the way of God this and every day.

Arboretum

Posted in My Kids

Yesterday we went to the Arboretum with our homeschool friends.

Here are the kids posing for a quick shot. (My kids are warning their friends to get use to it because Mom takes a LOT of pictures for her blog! LOL)

My daughter liked these horses because the reminded her of Penny and Patriot in the Felicity books!

HELLO grass stains!
The BIG hit of the day was rolling down this hill!  What I thought would be a day of peaceful culture turned into P.E.!  LOL  The kids rolled down the hill about a zillion times!

Since the hill didn't wear them out enough after lunch they took turn carrying each other around the lunch area!  LOL
Before anyone asks we were the only ones there and so no on was being bothered.  I don't know why they came up with doing this, but they had a blast with it! LOL

Oh, we looked at flowers too!  These were my favorites.

I have no idea what this is, but I really like them!

Such pretty colors!  Isn't God amazing!!!!

It was a fun day!  I did learn a BIG lesson though.  I am too old to go on a field trip two days in a row!  I am worn out!!!!

Zoo

Posted in My Kids

We went to the Zoo yesterday.  I am so happy to be in a city with a GREAT ZOO again!  YAY!!! I have missed the Zoo SO MUCH the last 4 years.  I would go once a week if the kids didn't get tired of it!  LOL

Feeding the birds

Milking a (plastic) cow!

We got to pet a crocodille.

CHEESE!

We watched this Lion climb into the tree and lay down.  It was quite entertaining!

Measuring our wing span against the Raptors.

Zebra

Oh and we found a house!  LOL  Okay, it is in the Zoo and I think they would kick us out pretty quickly.  But, if I could live AT the Zoo that would be sooooo cool!

It was a beautiful day!  Hard to believe it was snowing less than a week ago!

Again?

Posted in My Kids

This is so crazy! It snowed again!!!!  And this time I mean it REALLY snowed!

Lot's of snow! (The biggest flakes I have ever seen!  Some were as big as the palm of my hand.)

These two stayed pretty calm about the whole thing! LOL

Here is my 4 year old making his very first snow angel!

He's HAPPY!

Contemplating hitting MOM! (Bad idea!)

Me and my honey.

Posing with their snowman.

My son loves this picture! He just hit his Dad's best friend smack dab in the chest.  If you look closely you will see his feet are actually off the ground!  BOYS!  LOL

Snowballs flying everywhere!

One HAPPY boy!

No mercy!  LOL

This whole snowstorm has cemented the kids whole view of our new home!  LOL  They are so excited that they are going to get to live somewhere that occasionally gets snow!  Twice in the same week is just too much for them to comprehend!

I am still weirded out by it!  Snow in March??? I left my heart in California!  LOL

Happy Spring Ya'll!

The "F" Word

Posted in My Kids

I recently had a very interesting conversation with my 13 year old.  He came and told me he had just learned about the "F" word.  Was I surprised he came to me and told me this? No. We talk about everything.  I was telling a friend about this later and she was shocked! (She is in her 20's with no kids.)

Here is what surprised her:

1.  That any human being in today's society could have made it to 13 without hearing that word.
2, That any teenager would come to their Mom and have such a discussion!

Her view was that this was a GREAT testimonial for homeschooling!  She just couldn't fathom that in this day and age any kid could actually maintain some innocents AND a respectful relationship with their parents into the teen years.  I was really glad to hear her perspective. I do take this type of thing for granted.  I live in a homeschool world and I really would have missed the significance  of the moment without her perspective.

It all made me appreciate our homeschool life a little more...

This also reminded me of something that happened when my oldest was 9.  Our 6 year old neighbor had come over after school to play.  We were all sitting around the table having a snack and the neighbor piped up with "Someone at school today used the "F" word."  I was shocked!  But, before I could say a word my then 9 year old stopped him.  He said "Look, I don't know what that means and I am pretty sure I don't want to.  So can we move on?"  I was pretty proud of him then and I still am now!  How awesome it is that he wants to keep his mind pure.

Who knew the "F" word could teach us so much!  LOL

Washing Hands

Posted in My Kids

From the Jonah Veggie Tales Movie...

Do not fight.
Do not cheat.
Wash your hands before you eat.
There is nothing quite as sweet-
A message from the Lord

Be a friend.
Say your prayers.
Heaven loves a heart that cares.
That is why I've come to share a message from the Lord.

And if you follow God's commands,
there will be peace throughout the land.
You will live long and happy lives...
with your sheep - your kids - your wives.

Don't eat pigs
Don't eat bats.
Don't eat beetles, flies, or gnats.
Stay away from all of that.
A message from the Lord

***********************************************

Yesterday I was watching my 4 year old wash his hands.  He was soaping each finger front, back and in between very intently.  I told him "Wow, you are a very good hand washer!"  He replied "This is the way God says to wash our hands."  very matter of fact.  I said "Why do you think that?"  He replied "Because this is how they taught us to wash our hands at my church class and at church they tell you what God says."

I guess I can't argue with that!

LOL

I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, O Lord,
proclaiming aloud your praise and telling of all your wonderful deeds.

Psalms 26: 6-12

Happy Birthday Treasure Hunt

Posted in My Kids

I did a treasure hunt in August for my oldest sons birthday.  I came up with the idea because since we were living 1200+ miles from Dad we were not giving him his "real" gifts on his actual birthday.  I wanted to do something to celebrate on the actual day and this was a HUGE success.  The other kids quickly informed me they also wanted a treasure hunt.  So a new tradition has begun!

Here is the latest treasure hunt!

Happy Birthday our little GEM, today you are 7!  Time passes too fast…Soon you’ll be eleven!

A treasure hunt is the thing we will do.  To celebrate and say Happy Birthday to YOU!!!!

So here’s your first clue.  What could be said?  You will find it hidden under the bed!

You found that so fast!  What a good girl you are.
Now go and find one out in the car.

Now that was too easy.  Here is clue number two.
Look in the bathroom in a basket that’s blue.

You think this is easy?  Let’s make one not so.
Under the sink is where you should go!

You found another!  Just one more to go.
Look under the T.V.  The BIG one you know.

You found the last one!  We hope you had fun!
We love you so much our precious one.

 Happy Happy Birthday!!!!
Love Mom, Dad and your brothers.

Her she is with her pile of gifts!  (All little things I picked up on the 4 for a dollar table at Claire's!)

Opening gifts.
Her brothers look on!
Have I mentioned my 13 year old is silly!  LOL  Yes he is wearing one of her new headbands!  Crazy boy!
Loving on her new stuffed penguin. It was a very happy day!  She was actual very surprised when she woke up to a treasure hunt.  She said "I didn't think you could do it when we are staying at someone else's house!"  She is such a sweet girl!

Our little GEM is 7 today!

WOW!!!

To My Daughter

Precious little girl,
More like me than anyone else on the planet.
I am so glad that God brought you into my life!

You make me smile and laugh every day.
Together we are "The Girls".
We giggle and laugh and share our feminine sides,
in a house where we are outnumbered by boys!

I love the way you squeal with glee when I get a new haircut,
or shoes, or anything!
You notice the smallest detail.  If I so much as light a candle you know it!

You are a precious gift of God!
I hope you know how much you are loved!
You truly are our gem.

Happy Birthday my little girl!

XOXOXO

Mommy

Since she already had her birthday party early we kept things simple and went out for pizza with some friends last night.

Here she is opening gifts.
A hug for Snow White.

So pretty!

Reading a card with Dad. It is SO nice to have him around again!

La Brea Tar Pits

Posted in My Kids

Since I was at The American Girl Place while the boys when to The La Brea Tar Pits I asked my 13 year old to write something up about this part of our vacation.  Here is his contribution:

La Brea Tar Pits

The La Brea Tar Pits are the only area ever to have a major archaeological dig located inside a city. (Los Angeles) Millions of bones are pulled from the pit every year.

A few of the fossils of animals found there are

Saber-toothed Cats,
Short faced bears,
Ancient Camels,
Mammoths,
Ancient Horses,
Prehistoric Bison,
Giant Sloths,
Many ancient vultures and other birds of prey have also been found.
Many insects and fossilized plants have also been found.

However, out of literally millions and millions of bones, only 1 human skeleton has been found. There are no dinosaurs found in the La Brea tar pits, because the pits did not begin to form until after the dinosaurs went extinct.

How did all these animals end up in the tar pits?  The tar pits would become covered with leaves, and mud, and grass would grow up through them until it looked just like land. Then a unlucky animal would walk up and think the tar pits were just watering holes, and step into them. They would get stuck, and attract a predator who would attack the animal and also get stuck until it died of dehydration, or starved.

The pits have been being excavated ever since the 1940's, and are excavated every summer, when the heat makes it easier to remove the tar. They also only excavate it every summer due to funding, and the fact that a majority of the workers are students at the local college.

The Pits have been mentioned in a Bugs Bunny Cartoon “My Bunny Lies Over the Sea.”and was mentioned often in “The Flintstones”.

There is a Museum at the tar pits called the C. Page Museum.  You can learn more about the Tar Pits by visiting their website.

Observatory

Posted in My Kids

One of the reasons we wanted to go to Los Angeles "one last time" before we head East is because we wanted to go to The Observatory at Griffith Park.  My husband grew up near Griffith Park and spent much of his childhood in the park.  We have been there together hundreds of times, so it is a special place for us.

A few years ago they closed the Observatory for a 93 million dollar renovation!  They spent 4 years putting a basement under the front lawn.   I really wanted to see what 93 million could buy these days!  LOL

I was happy to see when we arrived that the outside of the Observatory had not changed.  I was expecting them to have added a parking garage, but NOPE they parking is still very tiny.  It wasn't a problem for us because we went in the middle of the week and it was raining.  But I would imagine the weekends and Summers are interesting???  I can remember parking problems back in the 80's!  LOL (So what I am saying is I thought for 93 million they would have sprung for some better parking!)

The other good new was that the Foucault's Pendulum is still located right inside the front door.
I have frequently thought we should have one of these installed in our home.  All 3 kids are fascinated with it and they are happy to stand and watch the pendulum swing back and forth until Mom can't take it anymore!  LOL

This is at the new entrance to the 93 million dollar basement!  LOL
It is a display of 2000 pieces of planet/sky/star related jewelry that was collected by one woman! The website says It "is a 150-foot timeline of the universe whimsically composed of celestial-themed jewelry in the glass case that lines the corridor.
" When they renovated the museum she donated it all.  They did a really great job grouping it all together and making a real work of art out of it.  The boys were not impressed, but my daughter and I loved it!

Here is my oldest holding a piece of meterorite.

My daughter checking out a huge globe of the Earth

There were a lot of interactive exhibits.  Which the little engineer of the family LOVED!

My kids with Einstein

This was cool.  An actual piece of Moon rock next to a cool model of the Moon.

Here is my little one touching a piece of the moon and a piece of mars!

This is a fragment of the meteor from Meteor Crater in Arizona.  We have been there many time so this kids thought it was cool to see this!

This was in the Observatory before the remodel.
This poor woman was hit by a piece of rogue meteor that fell through her roof!  I don't know which would be worse, getting hit or having this picture out for all the world to see!  LOL

Star Gazing

This thing is a real kid pleaser! It is called a Tesla coil. I don't really understand how it works, but I know my kids love to push the button to make the electricity shoot through the air!  LOL (Very Frankenstein.  This one in fact was used in the Frakenstein Movie.)

This was my oldest sons favorite thing there.
Apparently for 93 million dollars you can get the sign, but that is not quite enough to buy the letters to go on it!  LOL  We decided this was weather information. It was telling us it was dark and rainy!

It was a fun visit.  It would have been much better if the weather had cooperated  We didn't get to go up and see the BIG telescopes, which was a bummer.  A lot of things were closed because it was a weekday and hardly anyone was there. But, it is always great to have to place to yourself.  My kids LOVE to ask questions so it was fun to have all the docents undivided attention!

As for the 93 million they spent???  Wow, I was a little disappointed.  I mean I was expecting the Moon and the Stars! (Pardon the pun!  LOL)  I was actually a little surprised how little it had changed for so much money.  BUT, it is in Los Angeles after all and everyone knows things cost a lot more there! LOL  Honestly, I just cannot get past the fact that they did nothing to improve the parking.....

4 Year Old Funnies

Posted in My Kids

My 4 year old is so funny!  He is always making us laugh!

This morning I was having the kids pack the toy closet.  (Yes, I will probably regret it when unpacking!  LOL)  My 13 year old started messing with this Go Diego Go Walkie Talkie I had gotten the 4 year old for Christmas.  No matter what button he pushed ALL the messages where is Spanish. I was in the next room and he comes out of the toy closet. (Area under the stairs.)  He says "Mom, why did you buy this? It is only  in Spanish. How is he suppose to understand what it's says?"  Just then a cute little voice pipes up from the play closet saying "The animal sounds are not in Spanish!"  LOL

Then tonight after Awana my 4 year old gets in the car all excited and proud because he has something to give me.  I got him all strapped into the car seat and then he handed me a valentine he made at Awana.  I said "Is this for me?" and he replied "It's for you and your honey!"  LOL

This one he said tonight, but he says it EVERY night.  Since Dad is 1200 miles away he calls every night at 9:00 p.m. our time to say prayers with the kids.  EVERY night this is what my 4 year old prays. "Dear God, Thank you that my Dad is the best, because he is the best."  ROFL!!!  It just kills me!  It is like he is assuring God that his Dad is the best, so there is no need to question it!  He never changes it.  When Dad 1st left that was all he would say for prayers.  But now a year later he continues on to thank Him for his brother, sister, the cats, the dog, his friends, his toys, his food and occasionally (If I remind him!) his MOM!  LOL

Forest Lawn Cemetery

Posted in My Kids

It may seem odd to visit a cemetery while on vacation, but my husbands Grandparents are buried at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills. So whenever we make a trip to Los Angeles we try to stop by Forest Lawn.

My kids never met their Great Grandparents, but my 2 oldest kids are both got their middles names from them.  So they feel a special connection to them.

In never rains in Sunny Southern California?  HA!!!

These 2 didn't care much that they were in a cemetery, they were just happy to be let loose in the rain!
There is just nothing cuter than little ones playing with an umbrella!

After visiting the graves we headed over to see the display they have on the Revolutionary War.  One of the cool things about the Forest Lawns in Los Angeles is that they are really designed to be a place for the living.  The Hollywood Hills location is dedicated to the Revolutionary & Civil Wars.  Since we have been studying "Felicity's time" I wanted my daughter to see the world's largest historical mosaic, The Birth of Liberty.  This thing is AMAZING.  I don't know if I have ever seen 10 million of anything at one place before,  but this mosaic is made from 10 million pieces of tile.

This is the whole mural. It tells the story of our nation from the Mayflower to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

This is carved in the stone on the left hand side.

The Mayflower

Signing the Mayflower Compact

ContinentalCongress
The Old North Church

Betsy Ross presenting the flag to Washington.  This was my daughters favorite because of the little girls holding the flag.

Washington

Surrender of General Cornwall

I somehow managed to not take a picture of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  I'll blame the rain!  LOL

They also have a reproduction of  Boston's Old North Church
My daughter was so excited about going into the church, but then there was a funeral going on and we didn't get to go inside.

Usually we walk around and look for famous graves when we go to Forest Lawn.  This time we didn't because it was raining we were all soaking wet.  (One umbrella for 5 people is NOT enough!) We did see this one since it is right by the Old North Church.  The kids wanted to go see Lucille Ball's.  They are really into I Love Lucy right now.  But, I vetoed them because I was sooo cold.

So there you have it, the weirdest part of our vacation!  LOL  Actually we left this cemetery and went to the Forest Lawn in Glendale so the kids could see The Hall of The Crucifixion-Resurrection.  These are two HUGE paintings.  The Crucifixion is the largest framed painting in the world, standing 195' long by 45' high. (The length of the painting it 35 feet longer than the width of a football field!)  The Resurrection is presented along with The Crucifixion in an amazing Cathedral like building. It is all very impressive but at this point I had given up taking pictures and was just focusing on trying to not get any wetter!  LOL

So there you have it.  The weird things homeschool families do on vacation!  LOL

Hollywood

Posted in My Kids

While we were in Los Angeles we spent one morning in Hollywood.  Having worked at ABC TV "back in the day" I have spent zillions of hours in Hollywood.  I really feel at home there.  (Weird, I know!  LOL)  For some reason we had never really taken the kids to Hollywood before.  We would drive through and I would point things out , but we had never parked and looked at all the Walk of Fame or seen the hand and feet prints at Mann's Chinese Theater.  So this trip we changed all that!

Our first stop was Mann'sChinese Theater

The little kids were excited to see Minnie and Elmo there!

There was also a Pirate that looked just like Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.  I didn't get any pictures of him, but he was one of the funnier moments of the day!  He came up to my daughter and asked her if he could hold her doll.  She is so trusting she just handed it to him!  LOL  As she was handing it to him I was yelling "Never give anything to a PIRATE! "   Once he had her doll he decided to "bargain" with her.  He tried to trade it for her shoes, her coat, her necklace!  He was really funny and my daughter played right along. He finally gave it back because even Pirates are nice to little girls!  LOL

Here my 13 year old found Arnold Schwarzneggers hands!

My daughter checked out Julie Andrews handprints (Or Mary Poppins!)

Will Smith

My little guy couldn't care less who the hand prints belonged to.  It was just FUN to put his hands in all of them!  LOL

We had just watched The King and I when Grandma was visiting.  So the kids liked this one!

I couldn't resist taking a picture of John Travolta's
I was a teen in the 80's and he was a teen heart throb!  LOL

Checking out Whoopi Goldbergs braids with Dad.

Now for the Walk of Fame!

Mickey Mouse!

Bill Cosby (My 13 year old adores Bill Cosby!)

Snow White

Winnie the Pooh

ME!  LOL

Even the Bears at Build A Bear have stars in Hollywood!

We also visited the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.  This place is sort of a respite from all the craziness going on outside.  (Plus they have really elegant bathrooms which are MUCH better than anything else in the area.  LOL  I will have to post about my bizzare ability to scope out good bathrooms someday!)  Back when we lived in L.A. the Hollywood Roosevelt had a really interesting museum in it all about The Golden Days of Hollywood.  Unfortunatley that is no longer there.  One of the funny things we have told the kids about over the years is about the pool at the Hollywood Roosevelt.  Back when they had the museum there use to an exhibit about the pool at the Hotel.  The exhibit said David Hockney painted a really valuable mural in the bottom of the pool.  The sign went on and on about how valuable and rare the painting was.  It was called The Apostrophe Painting.  (We were assuming the word "Apostrophe "meant something really interesting in French or something!  LOL)  Soooo we decide to sneak out and take a look a the pool.  After much sneaking and searching this is what we found.

Yep, it is a pool full of apostrophes painted on the bottom!  LOL  Only in Hollyweird!

Here is one last shot of me with the kids.  We had a very fun day in Hollywood!

American Girl Place Part 2

Posted in My Kids

This is "the rest of the story" from yesterday.  If you have not read part one click HERE.

**********************************************

So, yesterday I told you about our day at American Girl Place through lunch.  Here is the rest of the day...

After lunch we went to the Photo Studio to get my daughters picture taken with her doll.

Here is the official picture we had taken:

My daughter was THRILLED to have her picture on the front of American Girl Magazine.  (Yes, it actually came on a copy of the latest magazine.)

Here are a couple shots I took of her while we waited to get her picture taken.

I love this shot!
Doesn't she look pretty?

After the photo shoot we went and looked at the exhibit of items from the American Girl Movie, Molly. This was HUGE for my daughter!  She loves all 3 of the American Girl movies and this was as close to a brush with fame as she has ever had!  LOL

Dresses and the Movie Poster

Another shot of the dresses.

Telegram from the movie and Molly's glasses.

More goodies from the movie.

Not wanting to miss a thing my daughter even played on the American Girl website!  She thought is was really funny that you could shop online from the Store!  LOL

We had to visit the Bitty Baby Nursery too!
I could have spent a lot more time in this room.  But, my daughter was rushing me through at this point so we could make sure to see everything!  If money grew on trees Baby Brother would have gotten a few new outfits too!  LOL

So since it was my daughters birthday celebration we went ahead and let her do her birthday shopping too.  Here is what she selected.

Felicity's Tea Dress

Irish Dance Dress complete with curly wig!  LOL (There are shoes for this one, I am not sure why we didn't put them on for the picture.)

Ivy's New Years Dress

American Girl Place Swim Suit.  This is sold only at the American Girl Place and was the bargain of the day at $8.00! LOL

This is also exclusive to the American Girl Place.  It is the Spring 2008 outfit. (Also a bargain at $14.00!)

So that was our very special day!  I can tell you it was worth the money and the effort to go to Los Angeles.  At lunch my daughter could not stop thanking me for taking her and telling me how special she felt.  At one point she said something about being so grateful that no one could take the memories of this day away from her and that this was the best day of her life!  It was a very special day for me too!

What more could a Mom ask for?

Oh, one last thing.  I have had several people ask me about budgeting for a trip to the American Girl Place.  The truth is they have the prices for EVERYTHING on their website.  I spent time figuring out how much the things we were planning to do would cost ahead of time.  There were no surprises.  As far as the shopping we gave my daughter the money we would normally spend on her birthday for gifts.  Then she chose what she would spend that money on. (With a little help from me.)

American Girl Place Part 1

Posted in My Kids

I don't remember when I first heard about the American Girl Place, but I know I have been planning a trip there, in my mind, for a very long time.  One of the FUN things we did while I was having time away was take a trip to Los Angeles and visit the American Girl Place.

Here are some of the highlights from our very special day!

Here we are arriving.
My 4 year old wanted to walk us to the door and for me to take his Bitty Baby Brother as my guest for the day!  (Yes, we are in to Bitty Baby's too!  We actually have 4 of them.  My daughter got her 1st one when on the day her baby brother was born.  Then she got the blond twins for her 3rd birthday and the brunette girl for her 4th birthday.  We split the twin set with some friends that year.  Now that her brother is older she gave the boy twin to him so they can play together.  He LOVES his baby brother doll!) My husband took the boys to the La Brea Tar Pit while we were having our girl time.  So they boys had a fun day too!

Here we are ready to enter!

This is the medallion in front of the store.
It reads: American Girl celebrates a girls inner star. That little whisper that encourages her to stand tall, reach high and dream big.

Here we are finally inside!
Here we check out the Just Like You dolls.  I wish I had taken video to capture all the bouncing up and down my daughter did! LOL

Then we checked out the Julie display downstairs.
This is the newest Historical doll in the American Girl Collection.  She is from 1974!  (More on this later!  LOL)

Next we visited the Doll Hair Salon
Yep, they have a doll hair salon!  LOL

Here is Felicity getting her hair done.

I think this would be the perfect job for me when my kids are grown!  LOL

Here is Felicity with her new do!

Now it is time to go upstairs!
Upstairs each of the girls have their own room.  The first room we came to was Felicity's.  This was very exciting since Felicity is the doll my daughter got for Christmas.

Here my daughter poses with Felicity's horse.

Next we visited Julie's room.
This was very fun for me because the night before we went to the American Girl Place I realized that Julie and I are the same age!  LOL  She is 10 years old in 1974 and I would have been 9 years old in 1974.  I am not too sure how I feel about being the same age as a "Historical" doll, but I had LOTS of fun looking at her room!  There were two other Mom's in the room when we visited and it turned out we were all born in 1965!  We had a lot of fun looking at all the "Historical" items and laughing!

Here I am in Julie's room
This was pretty much my favorite thing they had there.  Each of the girls had a display window like this that was set up as a vignette of the period.  The coolest thing was in each one there was a "window" you could look out.  In the window there was a video playing of what would have been going on outside.  So for Julie's window you saw 1974 San Francisco.  For Felicity you saw 1774 Williamsburg with horses going by.  For Kaya you were actually looking out the flap of the Tee Pee and saw horses and the cooking fire.  It was soooooo awesome!  Julie's window was set up to look like you were in her Mom's Store in San Francisco.  It was so fun showing my daughter authentic ponchos, pet rocks, lava lamps, fuzzy foot rugs, smiley face cups and macrame!  They certainly captured my childhood!

Here is my daughter checking out what things were like in Mom's day!

One last pose with "my" girl!
I am sure I had that same outfit in 1974! LOL  I would have loved to have brought Julie home with ME!

Now for lunch at the cafe!
According to the menu the women who started American Girl first had the idea when she was a child.  Her Mother took her into the city to go to the symphony.  Before the symphony they went to a very formal cafe for lunch.  From that time on she dreamed of a special place for Mother's and Daughter's to share a very special experience.  I can tell you her dream came true!  I have eaten in many fancy places in my ABC TV days.  Nothing topped this!  We were treated like royalty!  We were served 4 course.  Hot cinnamon rolls, fruit and veggies, our entree and dessert.  Everything was perfect!  The decor, the table cloths, napkins, china, food.

They even had special chairs and a tea set for our dolls!

Here is baby brother enjoying his tea
This picture you can best see the decor.  Everything was black, white and bright pink!

Lunch is served!
My daughter said I had to post this one.  She was very hungry and rolling her eyes at me for making her pose for "another" picture before she ate!  LOL  It is not easy being my kid!

My salad
This was the best salad!  It had chicken, goat cheese, cranberry's and pumpkin bread croutons with raspberry dressing.  Those croutons were amazing!  My daughter and I plan to try to make some one of these days!

Time for BIRTHDAY CAKE!
The reason for this visit was to celebrate my daughters 7th Birthday.  She doesn't actually turn 7 until February 25th.  But, this was a good time for us to make a trip to Los Angeles.  I had told her awhile back that she could choose this year between a BIG birthday party or going to American Girl Place in Los Angeles.  She had NO trouble making this decision!  LOL

Okay, there is A LOT more to tell you about our special day, but since this post is getting really loooooong, I will post the rest tomorrow.

American Girl

Posted in My Kids

You have probably figured out by now that my daughter and I are big fans of American Girl dolls.  Every time I mention the American Girl dolls on my blog I get emails telling me that Target has a version of the dolls that are MUCH cheaper.  While it is true that Target carries dolls that are the same size, the things my daughter and I love about the American Girl dolls is the History that goes along with them.  You see each American Girl doll comes from a different period of History.  Felicity, the doll my daughter got for Christmas is from the Colonial American period. (1774 in Williamsburg, VA).

Since Christmas she has had all of the books in Felicity's series read to her.  These books have made History literally come alive for my daughter!  She is now interested in fashion from that period, horses, how people lived during that time. She is curious about the Revolutionary War  She talks about the difference between life then and now like she has lived in both periods.  She is now interested in reading anything and everything we can find about the Revolutionary War. (Revolutionary War on Wednesday and If You Lived in the Time of The American Revolution are next on our list to read.)  I am also working over in my mind the idea of an American Girl Lapbook!  (Yeah, I know you can buy them, but of course we want to design our own! LOL)

So. yes I know the dolls are expensive.  I certainly don't plan on buying them all for her!  But, if she wants to ask for them for Christmas and birthdays and save up her own money for them I am all for it!  We do have most of the books for all the dolls.  I will happily pay full price for any we don't find used.  If this series of books and dolls make History come alive for my daughter I am all for them!  Just like I played with potato cannons and made revolutionary costumes for my older son to make American History come alive for him!  LOL

So why I am sure there is much fun to be had playing with the dolls from Target, we will stick with American Girl.  I hope someday my daughter can use the American Girl products she is growing up with to teach her daughter about American History.

Computer Keyboard

Posted in My Kids

My curious kids LOVE to take things apart!  So when my oldest sons computer keyboard stopped working the obvious thing to do was disassemble it before we threw it away!  LOL

Here they are just getting started with taking the back off.
My 4 year old was thrilled because there were about 20 screws to remove and he LOVES to work a screw driver!

When they popped the back cover off there were a bunch of these little blue pads that fit under the keys.

Very interesting!

My daughter is holding the circuit board panels that were next to the blue key pads.  You can see all the circuitry traveling through it to take the info to the computer.

This guy couldn't decide which was more interesting.  The keyboard or Mom's little hammer with screwdrivers hidden in the handle!

My 4 year old loves to sort things.  So he made a pile of all the blue things.  (They look like blue contact lenses to me!)

Now it is time to remove the keys!

Our little sorter collects all the loose pieces!

The happy destruction crew.

All the bits and pieces.

I think this is a great way for the kids to learn about how things work.  It is so fun for them to know they can't do this project wrong and to see the light bulbs come on when they realize they now understand how something like a keyboard works.

Now I just have to make sure my 4 year old can't get a hold of a screwdriver!  There will not be a keyboard safe within 20 miles!  LOL

MP3's and Hoodies

Posted in My Kids

I mentioned yesterday that we have been teasing my son that he is not a "real" teenager because he didn't have a black hoodie.  Well, another thing that seems to be standard "teen" garb around here is an MP3 player.  Now he has had one of those for awhile.  I on the other hand just got one for Christmas!  Yeah!  Well, I just happened to have a black hoodie too...So now it is official...I am a teenager!  LOL We just couldn't resist a few shots of us being teens together!

I love my news iPod shuffle!  It is teenie, tiny and holds a ton of music!  (240 songs, which is plenty for me!)  What I like best about it is it's really simple.  On, off, play, pause, forward, backwards, and volume control is all it has.  Which is perfect for someone like me that doesn't want to learn to use another complicated electronic gizmo!

When we were taking pictures we realized Dad has a black hoodie and MP3 too!  LOL  So here we are, all 3 of us being sullen teens together!  Who says homeschooled teens don't have peers to deal with?
We are so silly!
I am having more fun being a teenager the second time around!  LOL

We do get a kick out of seeing all the kids at the high school near us in their black hoodies.  It is like it is the official uniform of the school!  I keep telling the kids that if the school had a dress code the kids would all be screaming "NO WAY!"  But, then they all voluntarily dress the same!  LOL  We humans are strange and wonderful creatures!

Here is what I have on my iPod so far:

Coming Up To Breath Mercy Me
Go Newsboys
Shine...The Hits Newboys
The Wonderful Cross Various Artists
Hiding Place Selah

Holiday Ha Ha's

Posted in My Kids

Here are a couple funny things my 2 littles came up with over the Holidays.

My 4 year old was of course enamored with all the gifts under the tree.  For the most part we use cloth gift bags to wrap things.  I was a little concerned that he would have a hard time not untying the bags and peeking so most of his items I wrapped in paper this year.  But he found one that was in a bag...He carried it around for several days until the tag came off it.  He brought it to me and asked if I knew who it belonged to since it had no tag.  I felt it through the bag and I could tell it was a little Pirates of the Caribbean lantern.  So I told him it was for him.  He beamed ear to ear!  Then he whispered to me "That's great, I really like pirate stuff!"  I said "What makes you think it is pirate stuff?"  He whispered again "I had a little peek!"  LOL  I have no idea how he re-tied the bow, but he was sure proud that he got a peek!

Here is one from my 6 year old...  We were talking about what a pain it is to fly these days and how you can't even carry water through security anymore.  My daughter asked me why you couldn't take water.  I said "Well, there are good people in the world and bad people in the world and it is hard for the security to tell who is who.  Someone who is bad might try to bring a dangerous chemical on a plane that looks like water."  She gets a BIG smile on her face and says "Sounds like they should just get Santa Claus to be in charge of Security.  He KNOWS who's been good and bad!"  LOL

I love seeing the world through my children's eyes!
