This book is by katherine patterson who wrote "jacob have I loved". It is about a japenese girl the daughter of a samurai. Her father dies in battle and her mother marries a ugly potter. the girl (I forgot her name) goes to the court of a princess and then to the court of the child emporer. she falls in love with a spy from the enemy's side. her mother dies from a plague and in the end the girl marries the ugly potter (goro). I was not too happy about that, and I was NOT happy when the bad guy who she loves didn't like her any more because she had been working on a farm and was no longer beautiful. I liked this book, but I like "jacobb have I loved" better.
