Aug. 28, 2009 First Field Trip
We had our first field trip with a local group yesterday. It was our kick-off at Pullen Park. It was HOT, but a lot of fun. Austin & Abigail enjoyed playing with some friends, Erin did some walking & I enjoyed chatting with some of the moms. I didn't get a lot of pictures - forgot to get the camera out. Erin managed to get a shot of a Red Tailed hawk that they spotted. It was a huge beautiful bird! The hawk had caught his lunch (a squirrel) and while we were watching, he took off after another.

We also had this little guy join us for lunch...he seemed to like walking around on our drink pitcher.

Aug. 28, 2009 2009-2010 Classroom & What we are using
Our classroom covers a lot of our house space - a little here & a little there, LOL! Most of our stuff & where most work is done is in the dining room.
Here you will find our workboxes...

the large wall map (with our big whiteboard behind it, and the grumpy 6th grader sitting in front of it)

our small bookshelves - these hold our Geosafari globe, current picture study print, our school mascots, some library books, the FIAR books that we own, and some of our other favorites

a close up of our mascots, Flip & Flop (they are African Dwarf frogs)

In our den we have space for indoor PE (here is Austin using Wii Fit this morning), there is also a large set of bookshelves that hold our encyclopedias, childcrafts, other reference books, and larger books. It is also our music practice room - both girls play clarinet & Austin plays the xylophone.

Something new I added this year was to take the hallway outside the kids' bathroom & turn it into a visual learning space with posters, markable maps, and a timeline

I also have a desk in my room that holds books we are using later this year (mostly to keep dc from reading them early, lol).
What are we using this year? Well, some things I am still trying to settle out, but here is some of our list...
Erin (10th):
Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings (she went to the author's workshop at this year's conference & is really excited about using the program!
World History & Geography - She is using an Abeka text book as a spine for this & adding lots of historical fiction/biographies
Biology
Life of Fred math - she is finishing Beginning Algebra & then moving on to Advanced Algebra. Love this program - this is the first year we have not had tears over math!!
Langauge Lessons for the High School Student - we are using bits and parts of this for grammar review
Rosetta Stone Spanish
Latina Christiana I - dd asked to use this, and I found a used copy for only $10!
She also has a Bible Study from Queen Homeschool Supply, Clarinet, Volleyball, and participates in some art/music activities with her siblings.
Austin & Abigail (8th & 6th):
Because Austin has some learning issues (he has autism), these two work on a lot of the same things
Life of Fred math - Fractions & Decimals and Percents
Language Lessons for the Secondary Student
Spelling Power (3x/week) Spelling Wisdom (dictation 2x/week)
Most of the rest of their work comes from Ambleside Online readings & activities, Five in a Row & Beyond Five in a Row.
We had a crazy year last year, and one of the things I want to do this year is bring the JOY back to our school days!

Aug. 26, 2009 Playing Catch Up - AKA What we have been up to...
Whew - there goes time again. LOL!
We have been super busy, as everyone has been I am sure. Some things we did since my last entry...
Back in May we went to the state Homeschooling Conference, stopping by Hanging Rock State Park the day before...
Daddy & girls out on the rock (Mom was safely back on solid ground, thank you!)

This fellow was spotted climbing the tree on our way back down the trail. We stood and watched him for about 10 minutes. Ewwwww.....

At the end of June we took a whirlwind trip to Indiana. The reason for our going was very sad - my BIL & his wife had a baby born with a rare genetic defect, and the baby did not survive. We went up to support them. This was the first time we had seen dh's brother and his family since they moved to Indiana 6 years ago. While we were up there, BIL took us to Lake Michigan and Chicago.
Girls in the cold lake water

Mom & Dad - it was our 16th wedding anniversary that day.

Group shot of our three kids & BIL's three kids.

A shot of Chicago from the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier, sorry it's blurry!

July found us at the lake back here in NC...

During July, oldest dd also went to Youth Conference in Indiana - where she got to see BIL & his family again

Erin is playing Volleyball with a nearby homeschool team this year. It has been a great experience so far. (Though I am having a terrible time getting on a good school schedule because of practice & games.)
GO Lady Stars!

Some miscellaneous pictures...
Erin & Austin dressed up for the Parent - Teen banquet

Baby Carolina Wrens - nest is inside dh's engine hoist

Daddy trying to help with an Algebra problem Erin & I got stuck on

More to come later about school this year. We have a few weeks under our belts - but I am still struggling to get things running smoothly. I did go out this week & invest in shelves & shoeboxes to set up Workboxes in our classroom. Today is our first day using them & I can already tell a difference in how smoothly things are progressing. |

May. 18, 2009 Time Flies....
I blink my eyes and a month goes by.....
We have been trying to wrap up our school year. Once we have done our achievement testing, it seems like it should just be time to pack up the textbooks & enjoy life. We still have a few things to finish up though.
Here is a little of what we have been up to....
A field trip to an historic mill site. We enjoyed getting to see the old mill & the kids had a geology class.

Field Day with our local homeschool group. Oldest dd, Erin placed 2nd in the horseshoe toss, and 3rd in both the girl's softball throw & girl's broad jump. She was pretty excited about that! One of the highlights of that day was that Daddy got to come have lunch with us at the park!
11 & Up group picture

1st & 2nd in horseshoe throw

I am not sure if this was the winner's group for the broad jump or the softball throw....

Ds getting ready for the sack race

Youngest dd jumping - go Beep go!!

Some fishing down at the lake.

...and exciting news - the gospel trio that dh sings in finished their first album! I was even able to go with dh to the studio when they were in the final stages, that was loads of fun!

Apr. 7, 2009 The Journey I Have Been On
Up until today I have been MIA from this blog. I was on a journey - a journey to better health. As the holiday season approached last year I began to notice more and more often some things that scared me health wise. Numb hands, arm pain, constant heartburn, sleepless nights.... Through Thanksgiving and early December I just kept telling myself that I would change things tomorrow - because boy that comfort food tastes soooo good. Well, after several sleepless nights that included arm pain I knew I couldn't put it off any longer. Bless my dh's heart, he decided to get a Wii with Wii fit for our family for Christmas. (No he really wasn't hinting, because he loves the food just as much as me & I had not told him about all that had been happening.)
The day after Christmas I stepped on that balance board for my first body test. BMI registering in the overweight category, and weight was 153 +. I know there are people who struggle with much larger weight issues than me, but the only other time in my life I was that heavy was when I was very very pregnant.
The first days and weeks of exercise were a struggle - I was truely a couch potato!! I also completely changed the way I eat - cut calories, sodium, & added in lots more fresh veggies! I couldn't tell a difference in myself for a long time, but dh was commenting often about how I was losing weight. Now, after more than 3 months I am running 6 days a week - and wearing clothes I haven't worn in a LONG time. All of the other symtoms have gone away & I feel better than I have in years!
December 25th - 153+ pounds and unhealthy

A picture my oldest dd took today - 121 pounds & feeling better than I have in a long time.

Apr. 7, 2009 Nature Study under the Front Porch
Living on a farm out in the country we are surrounded by wildlife. Recently a part of that wildlife ended up a little too close to our house for our dog's comfort. After hearing Annie madly barking under the front porch, we went out to investigate. Lo and behold she was fighting with a BEAVER under the front porch! She would not come out no matter how we called her. After about an hour and a half she let the beaver walk away. Crazy!

Apr. 7, 2009 Traveling with Daddy
We are blessed to be able to travel with Daddy ocassionaly. He has to travel for business some weeks, and if we can tag along I try to find a field trip opportunity for us. Recently we went on a whirlwind trip across Virginia with him. Our first stop was Charlottesville, where we visited Monticello. It was sooooo cold that day!

From there we went to Richmond for a short stop, and finally to Norfolk. In Norfolk we spent the day at Nauticus - a Naval history musuem. We even got to explore the USS Wisconsin.

Oct. 28, 2008 My multi-tasking DH
The nature of dh's job (and our broadband connection) allow him to work from home sometimes. On this particular day he had been up under our old farmhouse checking the ducts. Our crawlspace is very, very dusty. Dh often has to be on conference calls - and this day was no different. I happened to glance out the window and see dh pacing in the side yard, still in his dusty coveralls - holding his Blackberry, earbud in, on a conference call. I feel truly blessed that he is able to work from home some - because he is able to spend more time with us, and has become more involved with our homeschool efforts. |

Oct. 28, 2008 A Trip to Williamsburg
Last month we took a trip to Colonial Williamsburg with several of the homeschooling families from our church. We had a really good time. Most of our group had never been to Colonial Williamsburg, or had not been in many, many years. Some fun shots from the trip...
Waiting for Revolutionary City events to begin

Youngest dd and ds admiring the horses

Uh-oh - in the stocks! In the second picture youngest dd decided it would be great fun to trap her older sister and her friend. She lifted the heavy bar long enough for them to get one foot out, then dropped it back down and sat on it.

Waiting for the next part of Revolutionary City

One of our favorite parts....the Fife and Drum group

Sep. 6, 2008 Nature Study on the lake
Ater wrapping up our schoolwork on Thursday we decided to haul the kayaks down to the lake & paddle around for awhile. There are lots of opportunities for nature study around the lake. We saw quite a few turtles - both on logs and just poking their heads up out of the water. Our silly dog could not stand the fact that we were out on the water without her, so she followed along. We had to continuously go near shore so she could rest. The highlight of the afternoon came when we heard "our" osprey calling out. He was sitting in a nearby tree. We watched as he took off, circle a few times, then dove into the water to catch a fish. He took the fish into a nearby tree to eat it.

Aug. 8, 2008 Nature Study in the Tomato Garden
We have been enjoying the company of this creature in our tomato garden for the past week. Last night I really wanted the huge red tomato under her web, so I loudly asked Ms. Spidey if she would mind moving, LOL! I just about jumped out of my skin when she scampered up onto the tomato cage. I called the kids out to see her & bring the camera.

DH was bush hogging all of the unused fields last night & the kids and I enjoyed checking to see what we could find after he moved on. Oldest dd and I saw several toads, a frog, and a wolf spider that was so huge we could hear it walking through the cut grass. YIKES!
I am looking forward to cooler weather so that we can spend more time outside. |

Aug. 6, 2008 Our Trip to Maine...more FIAR connections
While we were in Maine we visited the Owl Head Transportation Musuem. While there we saw Bleroit XI - another FIAR connection (The Glorious Flight).

Other sights we enjoyed on our trip...
Walking the Breakwater - Momma & Abigail were too cold and Daddy had to take us back to the van, but Meme, Dede, Erin, & Austin made it all the way to the end.

Camden Hills State Park, where we read a poem written by Edna St Vincent Millay - written right where we were standing!

At the top of Champlain Mtn. in Acadia National Park...

We also visited Ft. Knox, Lane's Island Nature Preserve (where Momma sat mezmorized watching a tide pool - we talked about the book Pagoo by Holling C Holling), lots of lighthouses and small towns up and down the coast.
When we got back to Boston we went on a whale watching trip...

...saw the USS Constitution....

...and we also walked parts of the Freedom Trail - visiting the Paul Revere house & the Old North Church (FIAR connection, Paul Revere's Ride). |
