Finished...Holding on to Hope

Posted in Books

I've just finished reading Holding on to Hope  by Nancy Guthrie and it's certainly going into my "keeper" pile.  Nancy Guthrie writes about the suffering and grief she experiences through the loss of her daughter Hope...and then a little while later, her son Gabriel.  She uses the story of Job as a foundation for the book.  She has also written a book called One Year of Hope that is a devotional.  That too is a very good book...I received it as part of a grief package.  Here's some quotes and a passage from the book that I found inspiring and encouraging:

"Our task is not to decipher exactly how all of life's pieces fit and what they all mean but to remain faithful and obedient to God, who knows all mysteries."  p.82

"Often, I see the body of Christ put so much into pursuing God for healing.  With great boldness and passion and persistence, we cry out to God, begging for physical healing.  And in these prayers, there is often a tiny P.S. added at the end where we say, "If it be your will."

But shouldn't we switch that around?

Shouldn't we cry out to God with boldness and passion and persistence in a prayer that says, "God, would you please accomplish your will?  Would you give me a willing heart to embrace your plan and your purpose?  Would you mold me into a vessel that you can use to accomplish wht you have in mind?"  And then, perhaps, we could add a tiny P.S. that says, "If that includes healing, we will be grateful."  p.88

Every difficult--from the minor irritaion of a broken piece of crystal to the piercing pain of a broken relationship--God has allowed every one for the singular and supreme purpose of transforming your character into the likeness of his Son.

p.  43

I was wondering what I was going to read next, and you just made up my mind. I bought this book a while ago, and have it listed on my sidebar with other books on grief, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Now I shall....I'm ordering another one by Sharon James on the life of Elizabeth Prentiss. She suffered personal bereavement it says on the back of the book, and I read a quote from it that just hooked me. I'm ordering it tomorrow. If it's any good, I'll recommend it to you, or send it your way to read. It looks really good. Thanks for the book review....I'll be pulling that book out tonight!

Love to you, Kathy
