How Do You Lose a Mattress???

My intentions were good. I hadn't washed the crib dust ruffle since...who knows when. Maybe never. I decided now was as good a time as any. So I took it off and washed it. A few hours..well actually days....later, I went to put it back on. I had been putting it off because it was an unpleasent chore. First I had to strip the bed, then take the crib mattress off, then put the ruffle back on, move the crib out to get it all tucked in, and put the bedding back together again all nice and neat. I had just pushed the crib back against the wall when I noticed the crib mattress was missing. Hmm...I twisted to glance around the room. No mattress. I looked under the crib, thinking it might have been pushed under it, unnotticed. No mattress. I checked the hall, the master bedroom and all the upstairs closets. I called my husband.

"Ryan, I can't find the crib mattress," I lamented.

There was a long pause. "You can't find What?" he asked.

Sigh..."I lost the mattress."

Uproarious laughter. "HOW do you LOSE a mattress??" It was a  perfectly legitimate question. However, it was not what I wanted to hear.

The whining began. "Kate is ready for her nap! She can't take a nap with no mattress!! WHERE IS THE MATTRESS!!??"

Ryan reminded me he was not home, nor did he have a clue where the mattress was. He just kept repeating "How do you lose a mattress?"

I hung up and went back upstairs. I was sure the kids had taken it and hidden it somewhere brilliant. It was time to think like a 3 year old. I searched  the bathtubs, the top bunkbed, the laundry room, and the front porch with fervor. It turned up nothing. Well, a few things, but no mattress. Then I remembered the kids had been in the room with me the whole time! Was it possible that one had mangaged to sneak it out while my back was turned? How many small children does it take to carry a mattress?  (Does that sound like a bad joke or what?)

I questioned the children. They were no  help. In desperation, I offered a monetary reward to the Finder of the Mattress. Kate had managed to pull a chair over to her crib and was standing there, holding the bars, looking longingly at her pillow and Kitty. We had to hurry. It was only a matter of time before the sleepy crying began.

The kids searched their hearts out. They uncovered many items - none of them suitable for a one year old to nap on. Finally, they gave up. I went upstairs, on every step asking myself, "How do you lose a mattress?" I sat next to the crib with tears of frustration and disbelief welling in my eyes. I leaned my head back to touch the crib and my head met something strangely soft and padded. My stomach sank. I turned to discover...the naked crib, with it's freshly laundered dust ruffle tucked neatly ON TOP of the mattress.

And now I have the answer. How do you lose a mattress? You forget to take it out of the crib before you put the dust ruffle on.

Oh sweety! I think this is a sign of Mom needing a break, maybe with a nice cup of tea?
P.S.- I'm glad to see other Moms sharing their "moments" also. :)

ROFLOL! I should't laugh...how many times my multi-tasking self has done something similar...but a matress...that is kinda big to lose!!

I always hated putting the crib sheets and dust ruffle back on!

We love the Batman from the 60s! We have one of their first movies...corny, corny...by we love it. have you seen the movie with the shark that tries to swallow Batman? Don't worry the "Bat Shark Repellant" came in very handy!!

Oh! That is just too funny!! Well, it is now. I'm sure it wasn't at the time. I guess what makes it really funny is that it sounds just like something I would do.

You, my dear, need a vacation!

How funny! You poor thing. I hope you got a nap after that too!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am feeling quite well, as long as I don't try to do anything too strenuous, and as long as I get plenty of sleep. I do have a little heartburn (not bad) after a full meal, and am feeling much better if I eat several small meals rather than the large ones I'm used to.

I hope you are recovering from the missing mattress.

Your Sister in Christ,
Carol

That sounds like my life...

That kind of stuff happens to me and I think I must be losing my mind. First for doing something so silly and then for taking so long to figure out how it could have happened. Thanks for the great story. I have had a rough week and needed a good laugh. Sorry that is was at your expense, no offense: )

Ridiculous

You obviously made this story up just to "entertain your dear readers", as you obviously feel so obligated to do. Your sequence of events did not add up.

Dear Anonymous,
Nope, sorry. I have better things to do with my day than make up stories. I have a busy life. More importantly, I'm not a liar. But thanks for stopping by. Hopefully you can find something better to do with your day than posting accusing comments on people's blogs. Have a great week!

If only anonymous knew my dear friend Jenny...they would KNOW she did not make this up. She is delightfully funny all on her very own...a God given gift you might say. She doesn't have to take time to make up things to make people laugh. Spend an afternoon with her and you would know that her blog gives you only a glimpse into the life/adventures of this wonderful family.

Love ya Jen,

Laney

Concerning what doesn't add up, (Anonymous), . . .

Seems to me that the post Jen wrote, above, contained a few time errors which made her post APPEAR not to add up, that's all. Despite that problem, it cannot rightly be concluded that her motive was foul in presenting a false story as true. Her silver lining is that "Anonymous' will serve to remind everyone to write with clarity and proper chronology, eh?! The incident will only sharpen all our communication skills. Keep on, Jen...keep on.

Sorry, everyone. I have read and reread this entry and I don't see anything wrong with it. I hate that I even feel the need to defend it since IT HAPPENED. I couldn't make it up if I wanted to. And of course I want you to be entertained on my blog. Why on earth would I put up an entry and think "I hope this one bores them to tears!". The whole thing is just ridiculous. Honestly, it has spoiled some of the fun of this site. I feel like this is my personal place to share what I chose with you and it really hurts to be attacked - especially by someone who hides behind their cowardness with anonymity.

Blessings,
Jen

TOO funny!

Your blog ALWAYS makes me laugh!! I love it... & personally, I see "Anonymous" as a sad, boring person with nothing better to do! You are awesome, Jen!
Blessings & Love...

i say it's them....

When things like this happen to me (and they do frequently) and my kids tell me I'm losing my mind, I say it's them that's making me lose it! A mom can only do so many things at once!! You're great. I'm adding you to my friends. looking forward to reading more of your adventures!
