~ Show & Tell Friday ~

Welcome to Show & Tell Friday!

Click above to link up with the rest of the group.

Hi Everyone.  This week is  devoted to a little project we are going to work on when school starts back up.  I have decided that we are going to ease back into things using a unit study approach.  The subject of this study was inspired by our lovely afternoon at the zoo yesterday.  Oh how we love the butterfly exhibit!  Being there with those beautiful creatures  gave me the idea of making this our unit study to begin the school year.  And of course, I found some gems at the gift shop to help us in our studies.
Like this book...

And this...
I sent off for the little larvae this morning.  (The dog is not part of my Show & Tell, Ryan is just trying to show off his Webkinz)

I also
ordered Hand of a Child's project pack on Butterflies.  (Everything is on sale this week.)  And while I was at Walmart today, I picked up a pack of colorful file folders and the big zip bags that Jane said to get.  (Thanks, Jane!)  So I think we have everything we need to get started.  I also will get some books from the library to round things out.  Oh, and the fantastic nature book I already have, Handbook of Nature Study by Comstock .  It is turning out to be such a good reference to have on hand.

I will update this post when the package of larvae arrives.  Have a great weekend and thank you for visiting.
Jenn
Oh, one more thing.  Here is a picture of my new hair cut. Grace took the picture, so it is not exactly the best angle, sorry about that!
What do you think?  Wait, no, don't tell me the truth.  Lies are OK!
Grace's view of me.

Very cute. I've been tempted to go to that length.

Don't you just love the kid angle? Makes you love 'em all the more when you realize that is how they always see us and still say, "mommy, you are so pretty. I want to look just like you when I grow up."

HI Honey!
The butterflies at our zoo could inspire paintings, as they are so pretty. I like your nature study program for the little ones.
I love your hair cut!!! When did you get it? Gracie did a fantastic job of taking your photo too.
Love and lots of hugs,
Mama Karen

Fantastic! We did the butterfly experiment last year. It's fun and quick. Only three weeks and they fly!!! We released them in some flowers around the house... the only part I didn't like was the spinning of the cocoons - the catapillar booties fall straight off! Strange! Anyway, the colors are so beautiful when they hatch. So fun. I pray you enjoy one of God's many creation studies.

ooooh this gets me excited for more home educating lol. My friend did the butterfly thing and I've always wanted to and DS has it on his list for a Contenders project. What company did you order the larvae from? We loved the butterfly house at the Living Desert "zoo". Are you by the coast?

I really need a hair cut! I have not had one since 2 weeks before Easter. I had short hair then, now it's chin length. My son asked me the other day, "mom, are you meaning to do that with your hair?' (He meant grow it out.) I told him no- but mine as well go with it for now. We also just got done a unit on butterflies! We did a lap book. It was fun! Enjoy! Kelly

You will have tons of S&Ts to share if...excuse me...WHEN your butterflies hatch. I can't wait to see the photo progress.
And...I think your haircut is very becoming. And you are very brave to put your picture on the blog. I'm a little camera shy. :-)

The hair cut looks great on you.
DS did this in his pre-school at the Church. He loved it so much, now day's it's mainly Biology & etc *d girls*.

Oh BTW, when we gotten her drum set. We gotten a great deal on the first one. It was a Pearl and going out of stock, paid a reasonable price for it. Everything included w/sticks.

Very nice hair cut! Grace has great potential as a photographer.
Butterflies are soooo fun. This summer, instead of buying the larve, the girls found catapillers on our property (on milkweed plants) and we made a pop bottle habitat for them from the Butterfly book and also a netting for them after they metamophisize (sp). It was great, I think we had 4 butterflies - the hardest part is letting them go, but they are sooo amazing - Praise the Lord!

Looks like a great book. We have Is a Camel a Mammal and Fine Feathered Friends by Dr. Seuss. I'll have to try and get that one too. Love the Webkinz! My dd has that exact one. His name is Tortilla- Tori for short.
