~ Show & Tell ~

Welcome to Show & Tell, hosted by Mary aka Canadagirl

This week is brought to you by .... no wait, that is not right.  This week, I am  going to talk about chores and give you a look at pictures of my little helpers in action.

Chores are a beautiful thing, would you not agree?  We have been better at doing them more consistently in the past, but we are making an effort to do so again.  What is the new year for, anyway?

I find that the best way to get our chores done is to do them all together, as a team, not with me distracted, if you know what I mean.  When I am distracted by the computer, things don't get done.  "Inspect what you expect"  says my dear husband.

These are not the only chores we do, of course.  These are the ones we do most consistently though.    We don't have a check list or set in stone routine.  You are probably now shocked, right?  I tried that and maintaining a system was more cumbersome than just doing the chores.  So, we set aside a little time each morning after breakfast to look around (my job) and see what needs to get done.  Then we divide and conquer.

Here are a few pictures of my little ones in action as promised.
Ryan's height advantage won him this job.  And he's really good at it, too.

Grace gets the push, pull, drag, carry chores as these are the kinds of things her Occupational Therapist wants her doing to build strength.  So...
She gets the prize job of using the new"er" sweeper.  We use this one between Monday House Blessings.  This picks up little bits of this and that very well.  I was impressed.

And then there is my 6 year old baby.  (He will always be a baby to me.)  He gets the jobs out grown by big brother.
He brings down the laundry and trash.

He puts away his toys...even if it is fun!

He is also my Mr. Swiffer.

So, how do you do chores at your house?

What a great picture survey of chores at your house. Yes, we do chores, and we do have a bit of a schedule. It just works better for me. We do the deep cleaning on Monday, scrubbing bathrooms (me), dusting the whole house (the kids), cleaning glass mirrors, computers etc... (Sarah), vaccuming the whole house (me) and mop the floors (me). But then daily, every morning they empty the dishwasher and start to fill it again. They fill it after each meal, and after dinner what doesn't fit in the dishwasher, they wash by hand. Plus they clean the kitchen table and sweep the floor after each meal. Plus, every night, their rooms have to be completely cleaned up before going to bed, no exceptions. Dad usually does the inspection on that. :)
So that's it. My long comment on our chores. I guess I should get some pictures of it all sometime. I'm glad things are going well for you.

This is one area I could use a little more of a schedule for. I try to do Saturday mornings with the deeper cleaning. Lighter cleaning during the week as needed.

The 9 year old son can do cleaning of kitchen counters and such that is higher. The 6 year old can do the lower work floors/vacuuming. Both move laundry. I'm waiting for the day when I can be less Type A and have them share in the folding of the clean laundry! *giggle*

I like your husband's "Inspect what you inspect." I needed that most, I think.

Hooray for child labor!
I can get mine done with loose change anytime the grandchildren look for ways to earn a few extra coins. Even the nasty cleaning the potty job!

I am so glad to be back! I missed you!

I have tried many chore methods over the years and I have the same conclusion as you, the upkeep on the method has been more work than the actual chores. We have set chores but I am dreadfully lapse in the area of homekeeping these past couple of weeks. I need to get back on track.

We have a major house cleaning on Saturday and then do "small" chores each day. That helps keep all the clutter picked up. How wonderful to have little helpers. Looks like they are doing a great job.

Good question! New house, new chores. So far they have had it quite easy, but that is to change soon when I finally get the zones and chores figured out. They do pitch in when I need them to, but it seemed like it worked out the best when each one was responsible for one room/zone plus their bedroom area, plus outside chore. Dh says, the oldest one is to have more chores, but I have to make sure all is well in the relationship dept. before tacking on more...

This is such a light-hearted, fun S&T! I like how you've settled on your chores--maybe not so burdensome when we all work together, eh?

Chores are a good thing! We have a 'chore tin' and every morning after breakfast the kids pick one out. It adds a bit of fun and variety because they're different each day.

Wow, !1 on the S&T list - ya gotta get up pretty early to beat Jenn. lol GREAT POST! It probably helps in motivation if they know they are the star fo the show - showing the world how hard they work - good thinking. :). Grace & Trevor look like they have this look on their face like, "Okay Mom, put down the camara and help us, will ya." lol Great idea for a post! We have a chore chart that for the most part is followed. And then before company comes - it's an "all hands on deck" team scramble for make this place spit spot.

These days we do chores the same way: I see what needs to be done and assign them. I try to rotate them, but I do tend to give certain ones to the ones who do them best, especially when company's coming. :)

What great little helpers you have. With only one child, it's easier to keep my eye on her - but she has a list of chores that need to be done by the time we start school, and she has been helping more in the kitchen at night.

My little ones also get in on chores.

Darling Daughter (8)...
.... helps load & unload the dishwasher and puts away the dishes.
... helps set & clear the table at mealtimes.
.... takes out the kitchen trash to the can outside.
... is responsible for her room
... cleans the "kids" bathroom mirror, sink, and now TOILET!!!! (many interesting comments from her on this)
...feeds her fish

Little Man (4)....
...empties the bathroom trashcans.
...helps set & clear the table at mealtimes.
...is responsible for his room.
...follows me around and helps out when/where asked -- so many regular chores are turned into "games" to train him (like: "Throw the clothes into the washer")

"inspect what you expect'...I like that!
You know...that's why people used to have kids...
so they could help with the workload!!
I have the kids help with the chore that I like least...laundry! I get it started in the morning, then after school, before they can go out, thy have to sort, fold, and put away...everyday!

My ds1 thinks it's fun to dust and vaccuum - who am I to argue? ~wink~ He is tall so he'll soon be able to help put things away in the cabinets (he'll be able to reach better than me!).

Fun post! We don't have a schedule - I'm just not that organised. We kinda just do what needs doing and keep things at a manageable level. If it gets past that, I do some intense blitzing. Usually when someone knocks on the front door, we all dive into action as I need a certain amount of chaos to function. (underneath it is clean!) I guess, a small three bedroom house with very little storage and family of 8 is never going to be a show home.
Blessings, Deb.

Awesome game plan!!! :-)

I only have one child at the moment so he has several different chores he has to do each day - in the morning, in the afternoon and at night.

This is more of a routine for us, but usually works great!

Thanks for asking!!! :-)

Nice photo journal of chores at your house.

We do chores rather randomly but they get done and household members do have daily assignments and then get spur of the moment extra assignments as needed. We pruned rose bushes and a clematis today. That's a random chore on my list.

None of our kiddos can say they weren't taught how to do chores and included in the 'team work'!

Let's hear it for handy and helpful young people!

You have some wonderful hardworking helpers, Jenn! My children help out with chores too and we all work together to get the job done. I tell them that if there is an hour of work to do, if all 4 of us get busy it will only take 15 minutes! :0)

I have been trying to get my little ones involved in chores too. I is a little different being 4 and 2. I still have to be right with them helping them do them. They have gotten really good at laundry though. They help me sort, and my son loves to load and unload the washer and dryer. He is getting good at that too. However he needs a stepstool to reach the top of the washer, then he practically crawls inside to get the cloths out. I cannot believe how big they are getting. They can do so many things that they couldn't even do a few months ago. When my husband comes home next year he is going to be so amazed at how much they have grown. It is amazing how much they have grown in the few months he has been gone. This was a great post. What better show and tell than our children.

Great show and tell, Jenn! And totally originial!
I think I'm a lot like you when it comes to chores. We look around and see what needs to be done and then do it. I have done schedules in the past, but I fall out of that real easy like. Sometimes I feel more on top of everything than at other times. Sometimes I care more than at other times. And somtimes, I just want to have fun, do the house so it's just not embarrasing. But having the kids help is always the way to go! Couldn't get it all done without their help.

Great system - and looks like you have great helpers!

I have a set of index cards that I made up, each lists all the steps to doing a certain chore and they are color coded by how often they need to be done (weekly, daily, whatever). First thing in the morning, the kids draw their chores randomly from the ones I need done that day. Usually it works pretty well, and it cuts complaints that "so and so always gets the easy job" or whatever; and nobody has to do the same chore day after day if they don't like it.

Blessings,
Kym
