Jul. 13, 2009~ Summer Goals Update ~ |
I was looking back at my summer goals and wanted to post an update. So far I am making great progress, but there is still much to do before school starts back up again next month. Yikes!
- Make studying my bible a priority. I am attending a Bible study this week while my kids are at VBS. It's all about this goal! I am sure to make progress here this summer.
- Train my kids to keep their rooms tidy. (Grace's room is in disaster mode again.) Well, my goal is now to get it cleaned up in time for birthday next Tuesday.
- Continue reading aloud as a family. (Dune Boy by Edwin Way Teale) Slowly making it through the book, mostly during camping trips.
- Clean the house on a regular schedule, not just in crisis mode. Really need to work on this one. Maybe after VBS week.
- Visit my grandparents weekly. Camping and VBS are messing up this goal. I'll go again next week.
- Catch up with dear friends. We've had many opportunities so far.
- Order our books for next year. Waiting on funding, enough said.
- Make a plan for Science studies next year. I've made a list and am working on the first week's assignments.
- Loose 10 pounds. Should be re-written to say, "Don't gain 10 pounds!"
- Sell some extra books. I posted a long list of books and am working on getting them to friends who wanted them. Not making money here, but am getting them to people who need them.
- Purge our belongings. Have a box filling up. Need to go to Good Will soon.
- Make weekly library trips. Camping and VBS are messing up this goal. I'll go again next week. We did participate in their send a post card from vacation program. It will be fun to find our post card on the wall when we go next time.
- Read for pleasure, starting with Maria Von Trapp's autobiography. Have finished several books. Am reading Elizabeth George's Loving God With All Your Mind.
- Work on a routine for fall which would include chores, lessons. Praying about this.
- Swim with friends once a week. Tuesdays are great fun!
- Teach my boys to be less dependent on screens. Side note: I am embarrassed to say that my boys have forgotten how to entertain themselves without a Wii or the computer, a skill we once boasted. I will have to double my efforts to make them less reliant. They do fine when we are camping, so I don't understand why they pine for them so when there is no school. I am praying about what to do. I do limit their time with a timer. That doesn't seem to help. I would love to just unplug them both and send the cords to work with their daddy! Took away Wii IN Jones game, making life a lot better!
- Go camping! 5 more trips until Labor Day!
So, looks like I am getting some progress made on my goals. How are you doing? The unexamined life passes by without notice.

Oh, that's a dirty word. Just kidding. My goals are to have fun this summer.
One thing that helped with our son's love for electronics is that we made a rule that he had to do devotions in the morning on is own and remind him that he's spending more time playing games than he is in God's word. That has helped a good bit. |

| Looks like some good goals! Hate to tell you this, but I think it gets harder to do without a screen as they get older. PC is turning 13 and starting to give up "playing". He still does some, but his tastes are becoming so much more mature and so the computer and video games are much more important to him. Unfortunately, LO see older brother doing this and now that is what he wants to do most of the time. *sigh* Anyways, good luck on your planning for school. I just wrote a post with some of our homeschool plans, if you want to take a peek. |

Grace's room sounds like Ruthie's room. Although, my room right now is probably in their same league. Bedrooms are our weakest link.
I know what you mean by the toys our kids pine for -I think it's a little bit because as moms we know that if their entertained quietly we can do what we want and the house is quiet. I'm praying about this too.

Hi Jenn,
Great list and update!!! Even when we don't make the progress we hoped, at least having those goals before us is a big accomplishment. Let's see, for me, I'm already 2.5 months into our summer break with only about 1.5 months to go, and I'm now finally ready to start summer - probably because it's been such a cool spring and a dry summer - the garden isn't going to produce much this year I'm afraid. My goals are, well, only marginally coming along - a few things I'm doing well in but most I just haven't even started - thanks for the reminder. I drug out my list while doing this comment and will post it on the fridge to constantly remind me to get a move on. Thanks for pricking my conscience, lol. |

Did you camp at the Indiana Dunes State Park? If so, could you tell us a little more about it? Either on your blog or on a comment?
Thanks,

Great list! I didn't do one for the summer but probably should have. I'm just trying to get through this busy season! I made one for the year and really need to review it and see what needs to be done. Have fun camping!!

Well said! Your goals are coming to fruition in a slow, steady manner, which will make them "stick." Prayer is the key. (-:

| Hey Jenn, I just had a thought about the boys' computer time ...I haven't had a chance to read them yet, but in the May & June articles by Titus 2, they addressed "News and Internet Use", perhaps some of what they said would be helpful in your instance, but like I said, I haven't had time to read through them yet. Anyway, here's where you can find them... http://www.titus2.com/corners/ scroll down to the archived articles for May & June, 2009. I know the title doesn't mention games, but they may address that too or perhaps in one of their older articles. I respect the Maxwells very much and they always give wonderful suggestions. |
