Jul. 27, 2009~ Falls of the Ohio River State Park & Corydon, IN ~ |
We got to see two very interesting places this past weekend. The first is near and dear to my heart because Jeff and I spent a night there on our honeymoon, years ago. It was fun to take the kids to see a bit of our history. Throw in the fact that the town is part of Indiana history, and you have a great way to get some learning in there too!

In case you did not grow up in IN, Indianapolis was not the first state capital of this fine state. Corydon, IN can boast that honor. Above is a picture of the state capital building. Here is alink if you want to know more.
Here is a picture of theinn that we stayed at on our honeymoon.

After a tasty picnic of fried chicken, we headed to a nearby park, The Falls of the Ohio State Park. We would have spent more time there, but a strong storm popped up and so we smartly took cover. We hope to go back and explore there more one day. We did get to spend plenty of time in the interpretive center. Here are some photos.

I hope you had a nice weekend. I am getting us ready to go back to lessons next Monday. The kids are excited to get back to work and we want to bank some days in case we need them this spring. My plan is to not turn on the computer until the afternoons. I think that will help me be less distracted. At least that is what I am hoping!

Jul. 19, 2009~ Zoo ~ |
Saturday we went to the zoo as a family. We cancelled our camping trip because it was too cool to swim, the main attraction as the park we were planning to visit. And it had been a long week with VBS, so we made the wise choice and sat this one out.
Here are my sweeties. You'll notice our extra child. She and Grace are inseparable these days. I always wanted four anyway.

Our zoo is quite pricy, so we always bring a healthy picnic lunch or snack.

These are our new bears. The other pair passed away from natural causes, mainly being 15 years old. They were brothers and a tad grouchy. These are not full grown and are playful, which means they are more fun to watch.

Notice the jacket? Yes, it was that cold. In July it is normally in the 80's with terrible humidity. It was in the 60's when we first got to the zoo.

Ryan and his new friend, Sam. (It's cheaper than getting a real one! )
I hope you've had a nice weekend. We are gearing up for a big birthday this week. Grace turns 10 on Tuesday. We're having a slumber party, her first. We're also hosting a family gathering in her honor later in the week. I keep thinking there will be a week of summer where we slow down. Doesn't look like it will be this week.

Jul. 2, 2009~ One More Day Until Vacation ~ |
There is a thrill of excitement in the air around here. It feels almost like Christmas Eve. (Only, the weather suggests that with our highs in the 60's for the last couple days.) No, it's better. It's VACATION EVE! Starting tomorrow, we get our daddy home for 9 days!

(Gnome made by Jeff's grandmother.)
Almost a whole year has gone by since our last big family roadtrip to Arkansas. It was on the way home that we decided we wanted to try camping. Talk about a lesson in patience! By the time we scraped enough camping supplies together, it was too late to camp, so we had to wait until this past May! I feel almost un-American (in a good way) on this point. I am glad we did not go into any debt and had to wait to get our supplies. It's normal to us now, to wait for something we want.
Today, the kids and I will pass the time by going to get groceries. Then, I need to work on cleaning some of the camping supplies. Even though we clean them before we put them away, they always seem sandy some how. Sand gets everywhere!

(Also by Jeff's grandmother.)
I am not going to do much blogging until we get back from vacation. (Really.) I am so looking forward to being away from technology. Being away is going to help, I think, break the ties my youngest has to his Wii IN Jones game. It's funny how when we are camping no one ever mentions computers, Wii games or the TV. That reminds me. Since TV has gone digital, we've watched a lot less of it. The only good channel we get is PBS. I am so much happier to listen to a record in the evening or watch a Wii Sports match between my husband and the kids. I feel like things are more in balance. I know some people like cable, but for me it is a snare. I am much happier without it in the house, even if it means we only get a few channels. I don't miss that bill!

(Yep. This one, too. She loved ceramics.)
I'd better wrap this up and get started. I do want to say that meals have gone better this week. I've felt the tug on my flesh on this one! I also finished two good books this week. ( Go to my nature blog to see those, if you are curious.) When I get back, I need to really get serious about next year's Science lessons. We need to start school early this year so we can take some time off later in the year when we move again. That means school could start back up in some form in just 4 weeks.
I hope you have a great week!

May. 18, 2009~ Indiana Dunes State Park, Again! ~ |
Oh, it was just pure, wonderful family time! We're so thankful for the great weather and the time together. Here is a look at our weekend.
We spent our first whole afternoon at the beach making sand castles, rolling down the sand dunes and general sand play. It was a brisk day, but lovely just the same. That evening, we had camp visitors, Jeff's mom and her friend. They ate hotdogs and smores with us after a hike up to Mt. Tom and a trip to buy candy at the camp store.
Sunday we had pancakes, bacon, coffee or hot chocolate. Jeff led us in devotions reading Psalm 19. After breakfast, we went on a long hike. You can see those pictures at my nature blog. The hike, trail 2, is beautiful and longer than any we've ever taken before. Jeff took the kids back to the beach after lunch while I rested and then starting breaking up camp.
It was sad breaking up camp, but we know that it is only a few more weeks until our next outing and to tell the truth, sleeping in our own warm bedroom last night with our kitty was nice. Like I said, our next camping trip is in 3 weeks. We're going primitive, which means no electricity or modern bathrooms. I think we are ready and I am looking forward to the challenge!

May. 15, 2009~ Next up... ~ |
When we get back from camping we're going to watch this movie.

Last week we watched this movie.

I am so excited. I think I've finally found the movie genre for my boys! While we are studying WWII and watching these for "educational" purposes, I discovered some real fine action footage that is not too "realistic" for my boys. I am in love with John Wayne movies! And so are they! |

Aug. 12, 2008~ Not So Wordless Wednesday: My Knight in Shining Armor ~ |
This past weekend, when I was so sick, my dear husband picked up the slack and let me get the rest my body was demanding. He even took the kids to Conner Prairie Sunday after I almost passed out at church, but that's another story. He and the kids formed a group to compete as pioneer survivors. They came in second place out of all the groups. And the things they did tied into what we've been studying this week as well. How cool is that? Here are some photos they took...

Jun. 28, 2008~ Farmers Market, Carmel Style! ~ |
| While I find myself with a little computer time, I thought I'd post a slide show from this morning. I am so blessed to live in Carmel, IN. And just about 2 miles from my house down the Monon is a quaint farmers market every Saturday morning. Here's what we saw...

Dec. 24, 2007~ Jesus is the Gift ~ |
The waiting is over. The party days are here! Yesterday was our Christmas celebration with my dh's mom and her brothers and their children at our house. All the preparations took days, but the party only lasted a few hours. That is the saddest part. It started to snow, so they had to leave early. But while they were here, we made the most of our time, as you will now see...and we were blessed to have some fun family time.
Have a very Merry Chirstmas Everyone!
Jenn
Jesus is the Gift
Jesus is the gift that perfectly fits every heart
and it is with His love that all celebration starts.
We rejoice in Him as we remember His birth
and thank God for sending His only Son to earth.
His life led from a manger to a cross on a hill
where He faithfully followed His Father’s perfect will.
He freely laid down everything so that we could live,
and there is no greater treasure anyone could give.
Like a scarlet ribbon His love wrapped around the cross
and He offered it to us all at the greatest cost.
So each time that we give we remember what He’s done
and honor the perfect GiftGod’s one and only Son.

Oct. 30, 2007~ More Birthday Photos, if you please. ~ |
This how we spent Trevor's actual birthday...
First, he chose pancakes for his birthday breakfast. Of course he got to help, a coveted job around here.

Then we took a birthday photo...

Next, we took off for a local pumpkin patch. It was such a lovely day to be out walking in the country air. Click on link to see more photos of our walk.

By the time we had found the pumpkins, carried them back to be weighed, we decided it was time for lunch. Birthday boy's choice...
Long John Silver's. (Only the second time in 6 years that he has been there, thankfully! ) The nice lady at the counter gave him a free piece of pineapple cheesecake, when she learned it was his special day!
We then went home to sleep off the carbs and get rested for the big birthday dinner with Daddy after work at Chuck E. Cheese's! (Ugh. At least they have a nice salad bar.)

Now, I must go prepare myself for the next birthday in 4 and a half months.
One more photo, I almost forgot. Here is Trevor with his new Bible, the only thing he wanted from us for his birthday. We gave it to him Sunday morning so he would have it for church. Even though he can't read, he is so proud to have his own Bible. He is looking at it and finding words he can read, so it won't be long until he is able to use it.

Oct. 29, 2007~ Happy Birthday Trevor ~ |
Today, 6 years ago, my life changed dramatically and for the better! I became the mother of a little sweet baby who had a long way to go. Trevor was born with a life threatening congenital defect. He had a hole in his diaphragm that allowed his intestines to develop inside his chest cavity. Therefore, his lungs did not develop normally inutero.
Thank the Lord, we knew early enough to receive the best care. He was born at Indiana University Medical Center and whisked off to Riley Hospital for Children the moment he was hooked up to life support. The next week, we waited for him to be stable enough to go ahead and do the surgery. He was kept sedated and on life support. We were not allowed to touch him. His lungs colapsed if they turned his head to either side, so he developed an ulcer on his head. To this day, no hair will grow on that spot of his head.
Those were the most difficult days of my life as a mother. I was needed at home to take care of my 3 and 2 year olds, but my heart was with him at the hospital. Praise the Lord, he came through surgery well! After two weeks, we were finally able to hold him. He needed another surgery to close up the first incision, so we had some tough times struggling with worry. I worried most that he'd get an infection from being in the hospital. When he was 30 days old, he got to come home. He didn't even know I was his mommy! I took care of that though. We've been joined at the hips since then.
We were so blessed. A few other babies who had the same defect were at the hospital when Trevor was born and were not so fortunate. One died the week he was born. One would need to be on a ventilator the rest of his life. Another had heart defects. Like I said, we were blessed. He was the best outcome we could hope for. To this day he is completely normal and healthy! Praise be to God!
Trevor is born. This is the first time I really saw him.
Immediately after 1st surgery. The bandage is called a silo. Kind of looks like one, too!
The first time I held Trevor.
Getting ready to go home! Ryan is 3.5, Grace is 2! I have 3 in diapers! What were we thinking?
Here he is almost one! Such a happy baby.
 18 months old
 Two is terrific!
 Three!
 Four!
 and Five!

We love you T.J. You are God's gift to our family! |

Sep. 17, 2007~ Back to the Zoo ~ |
Has your house been taken over by these little critters, aka Meerkats?

Well, my house has been and we don't even have Animal Planet Channel. We saw a trailer for Meerkat Manor while going to a free movie this summer. Ever since, it has been nothing else but Meerkats. We got to see season one and most of two via Netflix. My mom has graciously taped some of the current season for us. And then we discovered that they have meerkats at our zoo!!!! So we've made 4 trips there this summer to drool over them. In two weeks, my mom is hosting Meerkat Kamp at her house. It's a sleep over for my kids. They decided to save their $1 a week allowances this summer to save up for a stuffed meerkat. That was the object of their visit to the zoo today. They each finally had enough to buy one. Even Nana bought one, so she could be the dominant female at the sleep over!
Going into the Meerkat home.
"Take my picture with them, please, Mommy!"

Sep. 15, 2007~ Who Do They Look Like Most? ~ |

This is a pretty cool site. It takes a little time, so I am just doing Ryan today. I don't agree with the results. I think he looks like Jeff more. What do you think?

All right! I got one. Let's do another....

Hey! What do you know? I think the glasses swayed the computer a little.
Have fun with this one. Let me know if you give it a try. |

Aug. 20, 2007~ Museum Trip ~ |
Last Thursday we went to the Indianapolis Art Museum. I had not been there in years. And now they do not charge admission to their permanent collection which spans 3 floors! I think we will be going back to drink in the different styles of art more slowly. This was a quick trip to get an overview of what is there. I really don't know how I missed this resource. It was truly inspiring to see such famous artists in our little city!
Here are a few pictures. (Oh, by the way...you don't have to look at all of them! You have my permission to bale at any time !)
