Star
A few days ago I found this ad: http://www.equinenow.com/horse-ad-54020 Mom emailed the people, then talked on the phone and we ended up putting a deposit on Star through paypal! That was Tuesday. Yesterday, Star arrived.
I know you can't see her face or anything, but that is Kathy holding Star. That's me behind Star on the other side. It was a long drive here (1.5 hours!) so Star was a little restless.
I am told that Star saw the goat way out in the pasture and took off at a trot to see what that weird looking pinto Shetland was. I was in the barn getting the brushes. That's Kathy's daughter Christine holding Star's lead.
After Star sniffed and ate and sniffed some more, Kathy and Christine saddled her up. Christine rode her first, just to be safe. The last time they had ridden her was in August. I think she did really good with me riding her, but considering that, I'm pretty impressed with this horse.
I rode her in the paddock and we'll be keeping her there for a while until I feel confident enough to catch her and ride her out in the pasture.
After Kathy left, I unsaddled Star and brushed her down. Unlike milk cows, you can actually use the curry comb on her without worrying you are going to hurt her. Mom had gone inside to do something (update her status on Facebook or something) and when she came back out she said, "Oh, so you're going to ride her bareback?"
I knew she was joking but I said, "Can I?"
She said sure so I hooked the reins to the halter and scooted her up next to the fence. She's not as easy to scootch as Rosie because, well, Rosie's a cow and she's been taught to scootch and Star is a horse and she's been taught to carry a rider. So anyhow, I scootched Star up next to the gate and hopped onto her back. Mom and Dad joked that she was going to buck me, but it's different if you've ridden her and you know what she's like. Then you know her "horse-anality" and know that she wouldn't even think of bucking you.
She always stopped to take grass out of the kids' hands. She doesn't want anyone to feel left out.
Then Dad wanted to ride her. Star really likes Dad for some reason. So I slid off and put her up next to the fence for Dad. He got on and rode around the paddock at a walk and then Star decided it was time to trot! Dad was just letting her walk around, not telling her to walk, go this way or that way or anything, so she wasn't really disobeying. It was really funny, though. The look on Dad's face!! Ha! I wish we had a picture of that! She did stop when he pulled back on the reins and said whoa.
She's a wonderful horse. Just a few more things before I go milk... She's purebred Arabian and she's registered. She's big, too: 15.2hh for you horse people. For non horse people, that's around 60 inches at the withers if my calculations are correct, which they probably aren't. ;)
Thank you, Mom and Dad for getting me this wonderful horse! Thank you John, Jacob, Jason, Jessica, June, Joshua, Josiah, Jilly, Lina and Donut for pooling your money with mine. I'll pay you back, don't worry. :)
Adieu. Adios. Au revoir. Ciao. Cheerio. Shalom. Bye. :) |
