Dealing with twin babies

Posted in Pregnancy

In the past 5 months when I've been worn out with crying babies (and toddler, and at times big kids and Mommy too!) I tried hard to remember that this too shall pass, and that God would not have given me baby twins if he didn't know I could handle them.  My whole outlook has changed - I used to think a lot about tomorrow, next week, next
month...for the past few months the focus has been on this feeding, this nap, this diaper, this crying baby - one thing at a time, living just in
this moment.  That focus is changing gradually as I'm able to begin to make plans and get better organized.

It DOES get easier.  One of my friends is a few months behind me with boy-girl twins born in early April. She's been having a rough time, but still manages to nurse both babies, something I have not had success with for any of my children and quickly gave up (about 28 hours in) after the twins were born.

We discovered that the babies sleep great during the day just nestled into their carseats, swings (one prefers the cradle swing, the other the traditional), bouncy seats, or at times under a baby gym on the floor.  One thing that helps is putting them as far away from each other as possible, if one's crying is disturbing the other.  Or at times we've found they can go to sleep laying down next to each other.  Dishwashers, road noise, and other background noises can sometimes help soothe them to sleep too.

We're still experimenting here...of course things change so quickly.  My girls are now rolling over and aren't as content to recline in carseats
for daytime naps.  Sometimes one or both babies will wake herself up but not be ready to get up - if I give her a few minutes, she settles back
down to sleep on her own.  The girls are still sharing a bed at night, mostly because we don't have a place to put the second crib yet.  Most
nights we end up with one of them (sometimes both) in bed with us, so she doesn't wake up her sister when she waves her feet and arms around in the air and kicks the bed.  They truly grow so fast!  It's now so much easier to hold two at a time since they're not so wobbly, and at
times both have fallen asleep on my (or my husband's) lap, and then stayed asleep when we put them down.  We still have our cry fests, but they're becoming less frequent and don't last as long.  Usually the big cries at unusual times are tummy/diaper related - the babies are much more predictable now and are FINALLY starting to have something of a schedule.
