Writing has written essays, letters and mini-books. She has learned to write in cursive using the Handwriting without Tears Cursive Book.
Grammar learned rules of punctuation for commas, periods, question marks, exclamation marks. She also learned about types of sentences and rules of capitalization. She studied nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, achieving complete mastery of nouns.
Spelling spells at the 12th grade level. We did not do any work in this area this year.

This year we used ShillerMath, primarily books 2 & 3, completing up to Activity 43 of book 3. She has learned to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers up to 4 digits using manipulatives with exchange. She can easily add numbers (with no manipulatives) with carrying, and can subtract large numbers when borrowing is not required. She has mastered her basic addition and subtraction facts, as well as most of the multiplication facts through 5 (plus some beyond). She has learned Roman numerals up to and beyond 10, studied calendar concepts, learned about squares, multiples, and triangular numbers, expresses equalities and inequalities, solves word problems. She is able to count money using pennies, dimes, and nickels. She has also learned geometry concepts of symmetry, angles, parallel lines, parallelograms, and other shapes. She has learned about basic logic and can name groupings from solo to nonette.

Science
She has worked independently in this subject this year by reading books about science (i.e. Magic School Bus) and studying nature. She enjoys learning about astronomy and likes to identify flowers as well.
Bible
This year she completed a study of the book of John in Community Bible Study. She also memorized verses in The Climber Handbook as part of our churchs Awana program. In the evenings, she enjoyed listening to missionary stories as part of our family devotions.
Foreign Language
She received an introduction to Latin early this school year.
In March she started learning Chinese and has mastered the Chinese alphabet (written and spoken), numbers, and tones. She is quickly developing an oral vocabulary and has learned 3 songs in Chinese. Her reading ability is equivalent to that of a young first grader in Chinese school.
