Charlotte Mason

Hi We have never used a curriculum before and my children are going into 2nd and Kindergarten next year.  I told my husband that I do not wanna homeschool next year if we don't get a curriculum.
This year was a nightmare!  Not for the kids, just for me because I feel so overwhelmed with the feeling that I'm not doing anything right.  I know, I know, every homeschooler feels that way sometimes.  But I really feel like my children would be better off in a school where the teacher has the supplies and knows what she is doing!  I tell people this and they say "but your kids are so smart, so you must not be doing too bad of a job"  I know that they are learning because they both love to learn with or without my guidance.  They don't watch t.v or play video games and I know that has a lot to do with it because they are involved in "real" play.
Anyways (sorry rambling again...) , the curriculum I really am interested in is Charlotte Mason and MYFathers World.  Does anyone else use these?  I am kinda confused about whether we need to get Charlotte Mason books and MFW curriculum or if we would be okay using CM and Ambleside online, or if just getting the CM Companion is okay.  I really want a day by day curriculum so I was thinking MFW would be good, but what CM book(s) do I need to go with that?
I'm just really confused about all the options and don't wanna buy something we don't need because we will get basically the same thing in one of the other books.
I need someone to tell me what to do!  That is why I think I will like the day by day curriculum MFW, but I like the Charlotte Mason because we love learning in nature like she reccomends.
Advice please...
Thank you--Jess

My first advice is always Pray! And your children are surely better off at home with you, even if you just read stories to them!!
If you feel you need a curriculum that is laid out day by day than you should get it for next year. Do what you feel comfortable with. I know I wanted something like that when we first started Homeschooling - it builds your confidence in some ways and it helps you feel like you have accomplished something! Once you use it for a year, you may feel comfortable enough to go with something less structured in the future. I have never used MFW but I have heard good things about it. Just be certain it does have the daily plans you want.

Were you referring to the CM companion by Karen Andreola? I have that book and it is a great CM guide but it's not a daily planner by any means. I do love the way it explains the CM approach but its just a guideline for what types of books and teaching materials you may want to use. If you want to go more of a CM approach then I would recommend reading it then buying your subjects individually to fit. For example, Singapore Math, Beautiful Feet for History, First Language Lessons for Grammar and then keep using nature and notebooking for Science. (Fit in either Music or Art one day a week.)
You would then make up your own schedule based on how many days your school year is and how many pages are in each book.
I hope I haven't made you more confused!! Feel free to e-mail me if you want to discuss anything!

Hey, girl! Thanks for leaving a link on my blog so I could find you! I have a friend who is helping me decipher some of the CM stuff because there IS so much of it. I have the CM Companion book, but haven't had a chance to read it yet. It just came in Sat. Anyway... amblesideonline.com is a great site. My friend showed me sample schedules for her kiddos. If you are a visual person like me, it is easier to comprehend if you break it down into a schedule instead of looking at the weekly assignments. There is another site as well, which is listed on the blog I'm going to leave a link to. This is one of my friend's blogs and she' is the one helping me SO much. She has also led me to the woman who helped her in the same way just a few years ago. http://www.freelyeducate.com/ That should take you there and the entry about classical schooling lists another site much like ambleside. Good luck, and feel free to email me as well! :0)

Jess,

My advise - Try MFW. It IS Charlotte Mason and it also is classical and unit studies. The best of all the good methods. It tells you what to do everyday, except the math art and music are there for you, but you must be disciplined to do them daily or weekly.

I think, since you have not been using curriculum, but think you need some guidance, MFW would be perfect. I find it very easy to be very flexible with it. I also have no problem skipping something or adding something.

That post you replied to was old. I am starting Adventures (2nd) in MFW this fall. Just letting you know that I love it as much now as I did when I looked at it and said, "That's exactly what I have been looking for!"

I hope you make a decision and I hope you get to continue to homeschool.
