Mar. 20, 2009 - Am I adopted?
Hannah feeling bored and at a loss for activities walked into Allison's room.
"Allison, I regret to inform you that I have been chosen to tell you that you're adopted"
"No I am not"
"Yes you are!"
"Yeah but I have pictures of when I was a baby" Allison replied getting a little frustrated at this point.
"Yeah we got you when you were a baby"
"Then why do we have pictures of when I was in the hospital?"
"We have pictures of you when we brought you to the hospital to make sure you weren't sick"
"Then why do we have pictures of Mommy in bed at the hospital with me?"
"Because Mommy had just miscarried a baby.....so we went to orphanage to get a baby"
"No you didn't"
"Yeah we did, I can get the papers to prove it"
"Then show them to me" said Allison half believing her now.
"Well....Mom and Dad won't let me show them to you until tomorrow" said Hannah trying to get out this awful joke that she had played on her little sister.
Hannah was saved by J.J.,their six year old brother, who had come to tell them that it was time for dinner.
They rush to the kitchen hungry and a little excited after their previous, heated conversation. There Mom, Sarah and Jess are in the kitchen putting the last finishing touches on their evening meal, spaghetti.
"Jess, I told Allison that she was adopted and she believed me" said Hannah.
"Really?" said Jess busily working on preparing dinner.
"What did you say?"
"I told her that 'I regret to inform you that I have been chosen to tell you that you are adopted'"
Mom amused started to laugh. Everyone started teasing Allison and asking her questions about how she could believe Hannah. Mom laughing told Hannah that she was really bad.
This continued throughout dinner. The family teasingly asking questions about the "adoption" and Allison frustrated tried to defend her integrity. At one point Allison said, "If I was adopted you wouldn't know my birthday because I wouldn't tell you"
This brought an amused response from the rest of the family.
"Allison we would have other ways of finding out your birthday" Dad told her.
"Yeah we could look it up in your papers" put in Sarah.
The rest of the evening went by smoothly with only a few scattered jokes about Allison being adopted at least until Bible Study.
Dad was asking his children questions about Christians being God's children. They had been going through 1 Peter and this week they were focusing especially on 1Peter 2:4-12. Usually after asking a question and getting a variety of answers from his children he would tell them the correct answer. This particular question was no exception.
He asked "What does it mean that we are God's people?"
Again he got a variety of answers. Some were right and some were also correct but not all of the way right and one unnamed person didn't even know.
So he told them that God adopts Christians into His family.
At this juncture Sarah who was coloring with Allison at the kitchen counter, leans over and whispers, "So you really are adopted!"
This brought a chorus of laughter from the rest of the family. But what Sarah said is very true. We are adopted. Not by an earthly mother and father but by God. Christians are especially chosen by God to be His children. That makes me feel special and loved. I certainly don't deserve His mercy and kindness but He gives it to me anyway. Now that's love.
The story that you have just read is a true story in fact it happened just this evening.
Thanks for reading.
~Jess

*gasps* What a mean trick!! But funny, too. I'm glad Allison didn't feel too bad about it (how old is she, BTW?).
I think it's really neat how your family devotions tied in with it, too!

That was so sweet. I loved it. My brother and I once told our little sister that we were black belts in Karate and she believed us for the longest time. It was kind of funny but also not very nice at all. Anyway, I'll talk to you later.
God bless
Love,
Hannah
