Apr. 10, 2008 - More Mission Stuff
Hey people! Hehe.
I spoke about my mission again on Wednesday at our friend's church (dragonrider72 and Jesusfreak7). Nearly as nervous as the first time! CJ (dragonrider72) is also going on a mission and spoke after I did. he was really nervous! But he did good. We are both going with the same group, Teen Missions International. Here's a link to their website... www.teenmissions.org .
Here is basically what I said in my talk.
I have always wanted to go on missions. Ever since I was younger I have felt that God was calling me to the field. This summer I'm going to the Amazon River in Brazil. I am going with a group called Teen Missions International.
Teen Missions is an interdenominational group. There are 15 kids on my team, about half of them are Baptist, and there are a few from the Church of God and a couple interdenominational. Teen Missions Has been sending kids out since 1971. They have sent over 45,000 teens to 110 different countries. Their goal is to get youth into lifetime missionary work.
My trip will be from June 21- August 14. The first two weeks I will be in training at Boot Camp, there will be about five weeks on the field, and the last week is at debrief.
Boot Camp is no pamper camp! It is held on Merritt Island, off the east coast of Florida. We will be learning puppets, drama, music construction, and evangelism. The purpose of Boot Camp is to acquaint team members and leaders with the realistic conditions of the field, so we will be sleeping in tents, doing laundry in and bathing in buckets, there will be no ice, cold drinks, junk food, or electronics. The only literature we are allowed to bring is our Bible. We will also be learning teamwork by daily running an obstacle course. This includes a mountain of tires, a rope swing over a moat, 25 foot Jacobs Ladder, the Red Sea, and a 12 foot wall. Learning the Ten Commandments and the books of the Bible is required.
The dress code is very strict, on and off the field. We have to wear jeans or ankle length skirts the whole time. There is absolutely no sleeveless, tight, or low-cut shirts allowed. We also have to wear work boots the whole time except swimming, when we are required to wear watershoes.
After Boot Camp, my team will fly into Manaus, Brazil, and do puppets and drama for children for a few days. We will then take a five day boat trip down the Amazon to Belem, Brazil. Upon reaching Belem we will bus two hours to the Bible, Missionary and Work Training Center, located in Sao Miguel Do Guama. We will spend a few weeks helping them minister to the villages along the river in that area. Before we leave, we will spend a few days ministering to the villages along the Guama River, a tributary of the Amazon.
During this time we will be living in dorms, tents, and I think we are staying in the boat while on the river. We will also be practicing what we learned in Boot Camp by bathing and doing laundry in buckets. We will be doing a daily Bible study, and over the course of our stay in Brazil, we will memorize a total of forty verses.
Debrief is on Merritt Island, where we held Boot Camp. We will have time to relax and wind down after the excitement of our trip, and learn how to take what we've learned back home to everyone we know.
Thank you.
And with a sigh of relief, I stepped off the platform and collapsed in my seat.
I have gotten four vaccines so far, Hepatitus A and B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Now you probably think I'm weird, but I think shots are kinda fun! Holler if you agree! :)
To get into our first destination, Manaus, Yellow Fever vaccine is required. At this moment there is a national yellow fever vaccine shortage! No one thought I would be able to get it before my trip. I asked my church and CJ's church to pray about it, and apparently they did, because Mom called around today and there is one clinic that has Yellow Fever available! We have to drive two hours to get there, in Greenville, SC. But praise the Lord, we have one! I am so excited! God is so awesome!
Well, dinner calls! Please leave a comment!
Love in Christ,

I've felt called to the mission field for a while. I can't wait till I'm old enough to go on a mission trip!

Wow! I really enjoyed reading that post. It was like reading a short chapter from a book. That was really well said.
