The Journey Begins
I
should have known better than to never say never!! One of my
close friends decided to homeschool her two girls for a year. I
admired her greatly but knew homeschooling was NOT for me! I told
Irene I would never homeschool in a million years! Well, here we
are a few years later getting ready not only to homeschool but to teach
a high schooler! You know when you say "never" it's like waving a
red flag in front of a bull when it comes to GOD and the devil.
After nine years in the public school system, I am
taking my girls out. Their school has been wonderful and I have
driven them across town for two years to continuing attending there
when we moved. But now that Tori is about to enter high school, I
cannot in good conscience let her go. There are many reasons why
not. She is not in a good place spiritually or
academically. The public high schools are rife with humanistic
and evolutionary teaching that goes against what the Bible says.
And not all but a lot of high schoolers have NO respect for authority,
are into drugs, sex, alcohol and basically wasting their lives
partying. I want more for my daughter!
So, after a lot of prayer, we decided to put our
kids in a Christian school. Alas, life is never that
simple. Tori decided she would rather die than go to the academy,
my sister said give her a choice, and before I knew it....we were
planning to homeschool! I will have my 14 yo and my 4 yo
preschooler home with me this year, while my youngest daughter goes to
school. So, this is how it begins...!

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - homeschooling with a younger one in the house
In the 7 years since then, I have had another child and homeschooled the rest when they were ready. I have found that keeping the little ones busy with their own "schoolwork", really helps. It doesn't reduce interruptions, but it does keep them out of mischief. Colouring, crafts, educational videos and T.V. shows, puzzles, Legos or playdough all can be considered "schoolwork", especially if there is a goal in mind.
There are workbooks that can be picked up at department stores and there are a few curriculum suppliers that have workbooks for preschoolers. You'll be amazed at how quickly they learn! (That makes it a little scary though, since we know they are learning undesirable things, without us trying to teach them.)
We will be starting up once again on September 7th (we need a day to get back to routine after the long weekend.)
My students will be Gr.7, Gr.5, Gr.2 (she started in April) and K4. I've been working with the younger one over the summer, so she is hopefully able to read a few words by the time the other kids start. (Today she read "bat"!)
Hopefully you will enjoy homeschooling and find it as rewarding as I have! Maybe Belle will be envious of the time you are spending with the other 2. (A mother can only hope!)
