John Eight Thirty Two

• Mar. 23, 2007 - hands

Well, I am giving in to cyberspace peer pressure and getting in on the "hands" craze.  Of course I will put a different twist to it .

I did a search in the KJV concordance and the word "hands" appears 461 times in 438 verses.  Don't worry, I don't have the time or inclination to go through all 461 of them but for anyone who is interested.... here goes.
The word for HAND in Hebrew is "YAD" (the A is said 'uh') and it actually means ARMS but can be used for HANDS too.  In 1 Samuel 5:4 it specifies the palms of the hands by saying "kaph yad" meaning from the wrists to the finger tips.

So, the very first mention of hands in the Bible is found in Genesis 5:29.  It is in the genealogies and the naming of Noah.  In this verse, it says
And he called his name Noah, saying, This [same] shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.  So, already, you can see that our hands were used for toiling .  The next reference is about submission, the 3rd makes reference to the way that we can sin with our hands.  The 4th, 5th and 6th speak about  bracelets .  That's nice but I get irritated by wearing bracelets.....I have two that I wear every now and then, not at the same time, but take them off as soon as I get home.
The next 3 references to hands are not about hands at all, but arms...... you know? Esau and his hairy arms? Ok, I do not have hairy arms or hands thankfully but something interesting I have found here is that women wax their arms!!!  OUCH!!!
Of course God's Hands are mentioned a lot!  It also talks about us keeping our hands clean!!  This is in conjunction with our hearts so not a physical cleanness obviously.  Psalm 22 mentions Jesus' Hands being pierced...  We can use our hands to Praise our Creator
Our hands can get us into trouble, Proverbs has plenty of warnings about this.  Even the little spider in Proverbs 30 has hands   Hands can be used for praying and healing and blessing.

Ok, what do I use my hands for??  Well, all the obvious things like cooking and cleaning and loving and caring for my family.  I play the piano with these hands and I decorate cakes.  My hands remind me of my Mom's hands, this makes me smile.  I have pretty strong nails that don't grow too fast or too slow.  I hardly ever paint them.  My wedding rings are the only rings I wear and I don't take these off.  What interesting things have I done with these hands?  Well, as a Nurse, I could I tell you stories but I won't .  Maybe you can see where I was bitten by a patient??  I did a typing and word processing course and could type as many as 75 wpm in two languages at one stage.  Those were the days.....  I think that's about it..... oh, one more thing, I talk with my hands, no, I don't mean sign-language although I do know the 2 handed and single hand alphabet, I mean that I express myself with these hands .  My dear daughter J took this picture for me.
