• Aug. 13, 2007 - Birthing my son - a pregnancy and labour story

After being told we could not have children, we were blessed with our miracle daughter .  Yes, I blogged about it as you can see......
When she was 19 months old we moved countries.  The shock to my system must have done something because one month after her 2nd birthday, we found out we were having another baby!!!  Of course I had no idea I was pregnant.  I was traveling by bus from where we lived into the center of town and throwing up along the way.  When I wasn't on the bus I had no nausea at all so it was so strange to me.  I was convinced that I was just experiencing motion sickness - it was a long and bumpy ride.  As I boarded, the bus drivers always asked me if I had something to be sick into.  I threw up on the way to work in the morning, I threw up on the way back in the afternoon.  I thought I was hungry because I kept losing my meals, it never occurred to me I was expecting a baby.  Finally, on a whim, I did a pregnancy test and it was positive!!  We were stunned but overjoyed of course.  I was still thinking that I wasn't even supposed to have ONE miracle, let alone TWO!  So, I went to see the Obstetrician.  He happened to have come from the country I came from.  When I told him about my daughter's birth, he asked SPECIFICALLY by name if my the doctor had been Dr................  Obviously his reputation had proceeded him.  After that, the OB asked the typical question that they all ask here, "so you are keeping it?"  No congratulations, no happiness and jubilation at a new life, just a reminder of all the tests one can have to be sure that there is an option for termination if something is wrong.  I was quite horrified.  So, I refused all the genetic testing, we figured out I was about 10 weeks along and all was fine except for the throwing up on the bus.  I don't remember when I had the detailed ultrasound, I just remember thinking how much more advanced it was than in my first pregnancy.  I saw his face, the lens in his eyes, his gall bladder, the chambers in his heart, everything in absolute perfect detail.  At 24 weeks, I started having contractions and bleeding.  I was mortified.  I was put onto strict bed rest.  It turned out that because of all the damage from my daughter's birth, my whole pelvic floor was really unstable.  There was talk of having me stitched but the strict bed rest seemed to help.  At 36 weeks I was taken off bed rest.  I had terrible pain because of the damage done in the previous birth, but all in all, it was a good pregnancy and the biggest concern was what was going to happen when time came to give birth.  The night before my due date, I struggled to get to sleep.  We had had visitors in the evening and one of them had brought a friend with them.  The friend had told us all that she was in trouble with the law.  She was 'rough', had a drug problem, looked 'wild', she had no where to stay and she was hinting to come and stay with us.  Normally it doesn't bother me to have strangers who need a place to stay to come in but I didn't feel ok about this girl.  Thankfully, she got a call and left promising she would come back.  She didn't and we went to bed.  Anyway, at 2am, the doorbell rang and there was loud knocking on the door.  I got such a fright!  My mind was racing thinking it must be this woman coming back looking for a place to stay.  It was the POLICE and they were looking for someone else, they had the wrong apartment.    What a night!   I think it was the fright of having our door nearly broken down that started me having contractions.  They were regular at every 10 minutes but not painful.  I tried to go back to sleep and I succeeded but in the morning, my dear A had to go to work knowing I was going to give birth that day some time.  He had started his new job a week before so he couldn't not go ......  I had a cake that I needed to bake for an order.  I did that.  I did laundry, I hung it up.  I walked my little daughter to a play group in the neighbourhood.  Walked back.  Oh, I must share that on that walk back home, the thought crossed my mind that this baby would have red hair.  The contractions got stronger and closer together throughout the morning.  I finally called my dear A's secretary and told her that he would have to come home.  Like now, we didn't have a car back then either so he had to catch a few buses to get to me.  When the lady came to get her cake she was like, "what are you doing at home?!?!!?"  Let me take you to the hospital immediately!   But she was happy about the cake.  I wanted to wait for my dear A.  At about 3pm he got home and our friend took us to the hospital.  The waiting room was FULL.  There were women in different stages of labour all over the place.  I just kept walking and pacing.  It was the best thing for me.  When they finally could take me in, I was already 7cm dilated.  Then, they were waiting for a bed in delivery.  By the time I got there, I only needed to push a few times and he was out.  No tearing, no stitches needed.  It was a great birth in comparison to the first one.  Where she came out screaming, he came out whimpering.  I was in labour a decent length of time.  He was born just after 9pm but still on his due date after threatening to come so early.  He was baby number 97 of the week, yeah it is a big hospital with a big feeder area.  The baby house was absolutely crowded, nearly 90+ babies all lined up in rows.  So, when I went to go and collect him, all the mothers were standing and peering in the windows looking for their babies.  When they saw me coming, they all pointed at my son and said, "there is yours".  Their babies were all dark, with dark hair and lots of it.  My son was the pale face with virtually no hair, just pale red/blonde fluff.  I had to keep convincing the nurses to stop pricking his heels to check his iron levels as if he were anaemic.  They were not used to fairer complexions in that hospital.  So, that was nearly 7 years ago and we have not been blessed with any more miracles yet but God knows what He has in store for us.

I am glad that the birth was so pleasant compared to the first. But what a wake up call! My 2nd was similar to yours, in that he was born in another country, and his birth was very easy. Unlike yours he was the only one born on that day, but the hospital was over crowded. So I got to go home a day early.

A rough road to a beautiful gift from God. I remember telling the Dr. I wasn't going to have any more after laboring for 26 hours with James. Less than 2 years later came Ashley. I guess the blessings outway the trama.

Blessings,
Lori
