• Apr. 27, 2008 - 4 medals and one very surprised mama
This happened a few weeks ago. I can't believe I forgot to put this into a blog entry. But, here goes....
There was a regional gymnastics competition. A few hundred children participated and my children were competing too. I told them very clearly and a few times too that I knew that they had worked well and done their best and that out of hundreds of children there were only a few medals to be won and they must not be disappointed if they don't get any. In fact I even went as far as to tell them that I knew they wouldn't get any and it didn't bother me one little bit because I love them regardless! So, moving right along......
There was lots of excitement. We had to wait a long time before they could compete because of all the children and their routines so I did a whole bunch of the girls' hair.
Here is my daughter warming up....
So, to cut a long story short.... they both did very well. I was so impressed and of course I thought they were good. They are my children, that is my job!
And then after all the routines and vaults and what not, they took a break to tally up the results. Then they started to announce the winners.
The boy to girl ratio was quite low and they announced the boys first. For the floor routine my son got 2nd place!!!! I nearly choked on my cucumber that I was nibbling on! MY SON!?! During his floor routine, yes he did everything flawlessly (excuse the pun) but he stopped twice to fix the mattresses. And he is only 7 years old and, and, and, oh well the judges obviously liked him?!?! He jumped up there on the podium as thrilled as anything. Everyone around me was slapping me on the back and we all clapped and well yes, lots of excitement to say the least! Then it was time for the vault results. Again, I was just shocked - MY SON in first place!!! Seriously, I am so glad there was no cucumber left because I would have spat it out on the people below me on the bleachers. The boy hopped up there with the biggest grin and waved at me. His coach was crying. Who would have thought..... So then it was time to announce the highest score for the division and can you believe it? MY CHILD got first place!!! He did not just walk up there, he did the Egyptian tomb painting dance. I thought my face was going to break.
Well, then I got to feeling sorry for my little girl. She really works so hard and it would not be fair that he got 3 medals and she got nothing. So I was thinking of all the things I was going to tell her about how proud I am of her and all that and then they announced the 3rd place winner of the floor routine. I was so hoping she would get a bronze, that way we could have had all 3 colours but nope. She did not get a bronze. Then they announced the silver medal and lo and behold they called MY DAUGHTER'S name!!!! She got a silver medal! Second place out of all those other girls?! I can't begin to tell you how I felt. I wanted to cry, in fact I'm sure I was crying. Maybe we should go to more competitions? You can tell I don't get out much....
Do you want to see my children's floor routines? Send me a pm requesting and I might give you the link Thanks for sharing in my delight! |
