John Eight Thirty Two
• Jun. 27, 2008 - STRIFE
I am continuing the process of clearing out my notebook. I wish I had taken better notes. 
Dictionary definitions of STRIFE:
- Heated, often violent dissension; bitter conflict.
- A struggle, fight, or quarrel.
- Contention or competition between rivals.
- Discord
Strife is an angry undercurrent. It can be seen from very early on in Genesis. It comes in where people who have no responsibility in a situation feel they have the right to an opinion.
It takes EFFORT to keep strife out of our lives. If we can keep it out of our own personal life, it will be easier to keep it out of other areas of our lives too.
Peace is the opposite of striving.
In Ephesians 6 Paul tells us to gird our feet with the gospel of peace. It requires effort, a choice and a selection.
1 Corinthians 1
10Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Psalm 133
1Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!
2It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron's beard,
Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
3It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the LORD commanded the blessing--life forever.
We can tell from this that God does indeed want to bless us but there is a condition in that He urges us to have harmony and unity.
Matthew 5
9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Humility is necessary to make peace. Jealousy causes strife which is why we are commanded not to covet (10th commandment). |
