Special Walk

Our nature walk was special today because we were joined by my hubby. We've had several nature experiences since our first walk a couple of weeks ago, but it was a special treat for my husband to see the children's (and my) excitement over nature. Our adventure today was on a nearby nature trail. Every few steps we found something new and exciting. Here's a list of the things we saw: Wild Raspberries not quite ripe Pond- Water Hyacinth in bloom Algae Canada Geese- discussed migration of birds Great Blue Heron Dragonflies (not close enough to identify) We discussed the different zones of a pond (Emergent, Floating, Submergent, and Open or Deep Zone) Five Lined Skink (cool lizard with a blue tail) Spittlebugs/Froghoppers Black Swallowtail Butterfly Caterpillar (unidentified) We talked about the life cycle of a butterfly/caterpillar and why it was important to leave the caterpillar in nature, instead of bringing it home as my daughter's pet. I really wish I had brought our camera with us to document some of the things we saw. Hopefully I will remember in the future. |
