July 26, 2006 - One of the things I love about homeschooling...
One of the things I love about homeschooling is that we can just pack up our school and take it with us wherever we go. DH is being transferred for three months to another town. Now my response is - ok, we'll just pack up the school books and join you:) No problem - or Mafi Mushkila as they say in this part of the world. The company doesn't have to worry about DH saying, sorry, the kids can't miss school.. we can just go along.
He's been over there this past week (it's a four hour drive, so he'll be back on the weekend to see us), staying in a hotel and looking for a house for us all to stay in. He's found a place for us to stay and now the company needs to approve it. Hopefully that won't take too long.
I can't count the number of times I have been thankful that God led us to homeschooling. It was an emotional decision to pull our eldest son out of school when he was seven. He was going to a great little Christian school. But we knew we were called to do it.
A few years ago we were in this part of the world and war broke out. The kids and I packed our school books and headed out to family in Europe where we continued school until we felt it was "safe" to come back. Schools here were disrupted and parents were worried that their kids were "missing out"! We were only back a few weeks when another incident disrupted our lives (bombs again!), so we once more packed up our school and went back to Australia. Schools here were shut down again and parents were worried that their kids were getting "behind".
We have been able to join DH as he travelled to different cities in Australia and also overseas. As well as keeping up with the basics - Math and English, we were able to learn first hand about geography and the world we live in. What a blessing! We are so thankful that God has led us on this journey.
People often ask us why we homeschool. I tell them there are many reasons, but really, homeschooling has become a way of life for us.
Dan and I were reading Psalm 1:1-2 for his English today:
"Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law does he meditate day and night."
His assignment today was to translate this into modern day English i.e. into his own words.
When we came to the last part of meditating on His law day and night my son gave a bit of a gasp when he realized what that actually meant. That we should be thinking about God's word day and night.... now this is a challenge to me as well. But it also struck me that this is what homeschooling is. It is learning all the time - day and night. And if we have God's word as a central part of our homeschooling, then we are also obeying the commandment to meditate on it day and night...

I love this aspect of homeschooling too - though it certainly wasn't our reasoning - it just becomes a benefit - a way of life like you said.
We often get asked if we take school holidays with the school kids. I find myself stuttering around for an answer! We do and we don't. We do in that we change our focus for 2 weeks and we don't because we still are learning.
We have set ourselves up with camping gear so that we can follow my husband around on some of his jobs too. Just haven't got there yet!
