The Road Less Traveled

• Fri 8 May 2009 - Got Ducklings!

Wow, it's been a long time since I've been here! I've been spending too much time on Facebook... We decided to get ducks for eggs. A friend of mine from our church has ducks for eggs and gave us some eggs to try. They were really quite good! So we decided to get ducks instead of chickens. She saved some of her fertile eggs and a neighbor down the road hatched them out for us and today we took 16 home! My friend is taking a bunch as well and we'll see how many males/females we get and then divide them up later. So far they seem to be doing well in our homemade brooder. We're using our large wire dog kennel with cardboard pieces and a blanket wrapped around it to keep in the warmth from the heat lamp. My husband still needs to get the coop built so hopefully they won't be in our basement too long! Here are some pics of the ducks!

Here they are in the incubator although there are other eggs that you can't see that haven't hatched yet!

Here they are in their box coming home

At home in the brooder. They liked jumping over/climbing on their food so we raised it on blocks to make it harder to jump over.

Cute little guy!

I really struggle reading this stuff because the Lord says MANY times to not be afraid, but it's so hard with the way our world is changing. I have a feeling that life in the U.S. as we've known it will change drastically at some point but how and what will happen, only the Lord knows. Boy, I wish he would just return and take us home! It's not so much for myself that I fear but for my 7 children! What kind of world will they be growing up in? Anyways, it encourages me to up my prayer and time with the Lord!

United Nations' threat: No more parental rights

Expert: Pact would ban spankings, homeschooling if children object

A United Nations human rights treaty that could prohibit children from being spanked or homeschooled, ban youngsters from facing the death penalty and forbid parents from deciding their families' religion is on America's doorstep, a legal expert warns.

Michael Farris of Purcellville, Va., is president of ParentalRights.org, chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association and chancellor of Patrick Henry College. He told WND that under the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, or CRC, every decision a parent makes can be reviewed by the government to determine whether it is in the child's best interest.

"It's definitely on our doorstep," he said. "The left wants to make the Obama-Clinton era permanent. Treaties are a way to make it as permanent as stuff gets. It is very difficult to extract yourself from a treaty once you begin it. If they can put all of their left-wing socialist policies into treaty form, we're stuck with it even if they lose the next election."

The 1990s-era document was ratified quickly by 193 nations worldwide, but not the United States or Somalia. In Somalia, there was then no recognized government to do the formal recognition, and in the United States there's been opposition to its power. Countries that ratify the treaty are bound to it by international law.

Although signed by Madeleine Albright, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., on Feb. 16, 1995, the U.S. Senate never ratified the treaty, largely because of conservatives' efforts to point out it would create that list of rights which primarily would be enforced against parents.

The international treaty creates specific civil, economic, social, cultural and even economic rights for every child and states that "the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration." While the treaty states that parents or legal guardians "have primary responsibility for the upbringing and development of the child," Farris said government will ultimately determine whether parents' decisions are in their children's best interest. The treaty is monitored by the CRC, which conceivably has enforcement powers.

According to the Parental Rights website, the substance of the CRC dictates the following:

  • Parents would no longer be able to administer reasonable spankings to their children.
  • A murderer aged 17 years, 11 months and 29 days at the time of his crime could no longer be sentenced to life in prison.
  • Children would have the ability to choose their own religion while parents would only have the authority to give their children advice about religion.
  • The best interest of the child principle would give the government the ability to override every decision made by every parent if a government worker disagreed with the parent's decision.
  • A child's "right to be heard" would allow him (or her) to seek governmental review of every parental decision with which the child disagreed.
  • According to existing interpretation, it would be illegal for a nation to spend more on national defense than it does on children's welfare.
  • Children would acquire a legally enforceable right to leisure.
  • Teaching children about Christianity in schools has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.
  • Allowing parents to opt their children out of sex education has been held to be out of compliance with the CRC.
  • Children would have the right to reproductive health information and services, including abortions, without parental knowledge or consent.

"Where the child has a right fulfilled by the government, the responsibilities shift from parents to the government," Farris said. "The implications of all this shifting of responsibilities is that parents no longer have the traditional roles of either being responsible for their children or having the right to direct their children."

Michael Farris

The government would decide what is in the best interest of a children in every case, and the CRC would be considered superior to state laws, Farris said. Parents could be treated like criminals for making every-day decisions about their children's lives.

"If you think your child shouldn't go to the prom because their grades were low, the U.N. Convention gives that power to the government to review your decision and decide if it thinks that's what's best for your child," he said. "If you think that your children are too young to have a Facebook account, which interferes with the right of communication, the U.N. gets to determine whether or not your decision is in the best interest of the child."

He continued, "If you think your child should go to church three times a week, but the child wants to go to church once a week, the government gets to decide what it thinks is in the best interest of the children on the frequency of church attendance."

He said American social workers would be the ones responsible for implementation of the policies.

Farris said it could be easier for President Obama to push for ratification of the treaty than it was for the Clinton administration because "the political world has changed."

At a Walden University presidential debate last October, Obama indicated he may take action.

"It's embarrassing to find ourselves in the company of Somalia, a lawless land," Obama said. "I will review this and other treaties to ensure the United States resumes its global leadership in human rights."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been a strong supporter of the CRC, and she now has direct control over the treaty's submission to the Senate for ratification. The process requires a two-thirds vote.

Farris said Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., claimed in a private meeting just before Christmas that the treaty would be ratified within two years.

In November, a group of three dozen senior foreign policy figures urged Obama to strengthen U.S. relations with the U.N. Among other things, they asked the president to push for Senate approval of treaties that have been signed by the U.S. but not ratified.

Partnership for a Secure America Director Matthew Rojansky helped draft the statement. He said the treaty commands strong support and is likely to be acted on quickly, according to an Inter Press Service report.

While he said ratification is certain to come up, Farris said advocates of the treaty will face fierce opposition.

"I think it is going to be the battle of their lifetime," he said. "There's not enough political capital in Washington, D.C., to pass this treaty. We will defeat it."

• Mon 2 Feb 2009 - I'm Back + Birdfeeder pics!!!

Posted in Nature
So it's been since around Christmas since I was here! Thanks for those who checked on me. All is well - just busy and all. For a while I was having computer problems but now I have a new computer so I'm back online again! I keep thinking of things I'd like to put on my blog but not doing so anyways...

Here are a couple of pics from our bird feeder that FINALLY has birds coming to it! It's been so fun seeing birds outside. Makes me feel like there's really life out there and like winter isn't quite so bad!

This big, fat bird is actually a goldfinch! I didn't know they hung around in the winter! They molt and their feather end up a duller yellow and tan! Here's another better pic of a goldfinch in winter!

The next pic shows a Common Redpoll on the right and a Pine Siskin on the left.

I love the next pic of the Pine Siskin fighting off another Pine Siskin!

Finally a Chickadee...

and a White-Breasted Nuthatch

• Wed 10 Dec 2008 - I'm Back Again and a great Christmas cookie recipe!

Posted in Recipes
HI there,

It's been a while since I was here! We moved during the month of Nov. which thankfully went quite well even though my thyroid still isn't normal. I'm really enjoying the new place. It's so nice having a basement again and with the in-floor heat, it's quite comfortable even though it's not completely finished off or anything. Thanksgiving was a great time with all of my family together at my brother's place nearby here. Now it's hard to believe Christmas is coming up soon already! We'll be traveling to the Chicago area to see my parents for about a week. Should be good!

We made some cut-out cookies today and I decided to try making peppermint cut-outs instead of the basic sugar cookie. They turned out really good! I thought I'd share the recipe in case someone wants to try them!

Peppermint Cut-Out Cookies

Cream together:
3/4 c. margarine
2 eggs
1 c. sugar
peppermint extract to taste ( 1/2 tsp)
Add:
2 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp vanilla
Chill dough until firm. Roll out on floured surface. Cut out cookies using desired shapes. Bake at 375 degrees. ( about 9-10 min.)
Peppermint icing:
1/2 box powdered sugar
1tsp butter
hot water to moisten
1/2 tsp peppermint extract
Drizzle icing over cooled cookies. Sprinkle with crushed candy canes over icing.

Instead of using this icing, I just used a bunch of powdered sugar with some butter and milk and peppermint extract and mixed it together to make more of a frosting instead of icing and I didn't put the cancy canes on top. On the last small batch of cookies I did put some crushed candy canes on top of the cookies before baking them. I was surprised that they actually kind of melted in a bit and made it really good! Anyways, just another idea! Enjoy!

• Sun 19 Oct 2008 - We're Moving Soon!

Posted in News
Well, we've rented our house out! It's pretty much settled that my friend is moving out by the end of this month and we'll be taking our time and moving sometime next month! It's hard to believe that we'll be moving! I have mixed feelings. I love the place we're going to but then again I'll miss the little town we're in now. We can go on great bike rides around town and walk to the playground and know several people here. We're excited about this place too but it will be different! So we'll see how we like living farther away from a town. At least we're just renting so if we decide we'd rather be more in town, we can always move back!

Here's some pics of our house!

The house with my friend out front

The shed - there isn't a garage right now...
My son is playing with the dog that we may get with the house!

The kitchen and dining room. I love the open floorplan!

The open area with the living room on the right.
I forgot to take a pic of the living room!

Our master bathroom with the jacuzzin tub!

Unfinished basement with lots of space and a walk-out!
There's more to the basement but this will be the main play area!

Semi-finished room in the basement where my husband will make his office for our ink business (www.encoreink.com) and his transcription work.

The back yard area with the fire pit and deck

Our sledding hill down to the pond. It doesn't look quite as big here as it is...

The "pond" area. There's not a lot of water in it - you can't see the water from here, but there is some water. Enough for frogs and all! There's also a ravine that runs down into here.

Bingo the dog that they may leave with us! He's a border collie.

One of several tree forts. I think I want to make this one a bit safer!

So thats the place! Soon we'll be moving - hard to believe!

• Wed 15 Oct 2008 - Uncertain Days

Posted in News
We recently had a friend of mine ask if we would be interested in her house. She is going to be moving to the Twin Cities with her family and would like to rent her house. We went to see her house last week and it's exactly what we would love to have. It's on 5 acres of woods and has so many great things about it. There's a ravine that goes down to a very small pond. There's a garden already in and a swing set. The house is new - it's a modular that was put on a full basement with a walkout on one end. There's in floor heating in the basement and plenty of insulation.

Anyways, we're now looking for a renter for our house so we can rent out our friends' house and hopefully own it some day. We've had a number of inquiries off of my listing on Craigslist so we'll see what happens! I would be so excited to move to a great place with a great sledding hill for this winter! We just want to make sure that it's the Lord's place for us. So that's the news here!

• Mon 13 Oct 2008 - Trusting Our Children to God

Posted in Inspirational
Hi there,

I'm still around. I've been busy but doing well all in all. My health is doing ok. I don't think the hyperthyroidism is completely gone but most of the time I feel pretty normal thankfully and my heart is under 100 most of the time. I've even had it as low as 78 when completely resting! I'm supposed to go back to the doc soon to get my thyroid levels checked again. We'll see where it's at then.

Anyways, I wanted to write about something that's been impressing me lately. I was at my mil's house last Wed. and picked up a little book she had by Ruth Bell Graham about prodigals. In it there was just a little piece that I wish I had in front of me to type out completely. It talked about what my job is as a mom and what God's job is. My job is to love my children, train them, pour myself into them etc... (can't remember them all), and God's job is to convict them, save them, give them unselfish hearts etc... It said that God's part is a miracle as that is not man's natural bent and it's not our job to work the miracle but God's.

This really hit me because so much of the time I think I should be doing God's job. I spend my time trying to convict them and make them feel guilty. I try to make them feel unselfish and can tend to make them feel bad when they aren't being the way they "should be". Instead of acting this way and thinking this way, I've realized that it is my job to love them and yes train them and teach them how they should be, but to not expect immediate change based on what I say. Instead I am to extend more grace and spend more time in prayer so that God can work the miracles in their hearts.

Anyways, I pray that we can rest in faith that God can and will work in our children's hearts and pray that they will respond to his calling. I pray I will be a mom that my children will see has unconditional love and grace for them. God bless!

• Thu 18 Sep 2008 - Postpartum Thyroiditis

Posted in Home Life
I've had a very interesting week. It started with lasting week having times of feeling very shaky. Then Sat. it happened more and Sunday more. I played my violin in church and could hardly play because I was so shaky! At home I noticed my pulse was at rest around 110 most of the time. I should have gone in on Sunday but decided to wait and try to get a good night sleep and see if that help. I woke up Monday morning shakier than ever and knew I needed to go in to get checked out. My mom had had Grave's disease (overactive thyroid disorder) when she was around my age so I thought it might be that and called her to talk to her. While talking to her I started feeling really lightheaded like I was going to pass out and hung up quickly and called my husband to help and call 911. I thought I was going to pass out and die or something. Thankfully most of the kids weren't up although my 7yo daughter was up to hear this. So he called 911 and a couple of my friends from church who were able to come over right away. I live in a rural area so the ambulance with volunter person arrived 5-10 min. later - I was panicing the whole time. Then about 5 min. later trained EMT people arrived. They took my vitals in the house here before loading me on the gurney to put me in the ambulance. They also ordered an intercept where the hospital sends people out to meet the ambulance on the road where highly trained people can get in to take care of you on the way to the hospital. I'm out 25 min from the hospital.

So my friends were able to stay with the kids and my dh brought the baby with so I would be able to nurse her sometime. She had never had a bottle and thankfully I had nursed her not too long before. On the way to the hospital they stopped when the intercept people met us and they did some basic stuff on the side of the road - put on more monitoring stuff for my heart and gave me an IV and drew blood for the hospital and all. Then we were back on the road to the hospital. In talking to the people in the ambulance we decided that I had had a panic attack at the house and I really wasn't as critical as I had felt like. I knew there was something going on, but the feeling like I was passing out and all was a panic attack. I guess that's common but I felt a little embarassed about that.

So anyways, the nurse did a few things when we got to the E.R., room and my husband and mother-in-law (who lives in towns) showed up to hang out with me. Thankfully I was allowed to nurse the baby right away. I saw the doctor on call and he asked about my symptoms and then said they'd see what the blood work said. So then we sat and waited for around 3 hours. Finally the doctor came back and said I was right about the thyroid and that I had thyroiditis and needed to make an appt with a doctor to start treatment. I was then released.

So I went home still feeling shaky but not too bad and found a doc. I was a bit worried about drugs and nursing my baby. My appt with the doc wasn't too encouraging as far as treatments he thought we would do. In talking to mhy parents he was wanting to go to more of an extreme than is necessary. He also prescribed some drugs that I wasn't sure I wanted to take to help the shakiness and heart.

I prayed about what I should do and decided to wait before starting the drugs. In reading my Bible the next morning I was seeking direction from the Lord and opened to Psalm 27 and then read vs.14 which said:

Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

I decided to take that, at least for that day as permission to not take any drugs yet to slow my heart. Anyways, to make the rest of the story a bit shorter since I need to go, most of the days I've felt pretty good and my heart has sometimes been below 100 and often right around 100. I haven't taken any drugs. I read about a kind of thyroiditis which is much better than Graves disease where in the postpartum period you get Graves symptoms for 1-6 months and then it self-corrects but potentially can go hypothyroid afterwards and it turns out that that's what I have. I don't need any treatment and my doc said I don't have to take the drugs he prescribed unless I felt my heart was really racing and I could take them symptomatically. So all in all, I'm quite relieved. I'm reading a lot about vitamins and nutrition to help this and will see if I can help this naturally quite a bit as well. So that's been my week!

On the positive note, my church is giving me a baby shower tomorrow night which I'm really excited about! Anyways, I'm so thankful to God for his protection and help and healing!
