Two summers ago I decided to do my devotions in the psalms. I decided to go through and mark up the psalms in my Bible looking for certain things. Here are the things I marked.
- Yellow: I marked everything yellow that was a name or title for God - i.e. in Psalm 62 God is called God, my rock, my salvation, my fortress, my mighty rock, my refuge,
- Red: I marked everything red that God does (verbs) - i.e. in Psalm 25 God: shows his ways, teaches his paths, guides me in truth, teaches me, remembers his great mercy and love, remembers not my sins, remembers me according to his love, instructs sinners in his ways, guides the humble in what is right, teaches them his way, forgives my iniquity, instructs those who fear God, confides in those who fear him, makes his covenant known to those who fear him, turns to me, is gracious to me, looks on my affliction and distress, frees me from my anguish, takes away all my sins, guards my life, rescues me, doesn't let me be put to shame, and redeems Israel! WOW - that's a lot for 22 verses! It is so neat to see the things we can trust God to do!
- Green - I marked green everything that I'm supposed to do - i.e. in Psalm 25 I'm supposed to: lift up my soul to God, trust in God, have God be my Savior, hope in God all day long, fear the Lord, put my eyes ever on the Lord, hope in God
By the end of the summer my Bible was very colorful and I was ever amazed at how awesome God is - his names and what he does for us were amazing, and the need for me to come to God and trust him and put my hope in him and fear him.
I'm kind of wandering through the N.T. right now but need to find a more direct way to study the Bible like this. Maybe this system can be altered and used in other books of the Bible. Maybe that would help me in my time with God. Whatever system you use, make the Lord your priority and seek him and learn from him! |
