I've often found that my dreams of a lazy summer are more of a fantasy. When I let them have time for themselves they seem to naturally settle into unschooling. Even I tend to over-plan. There are books to read, yardwork to tend to, things to build. If I didn't try to get to yoga regularly, I would probably never sit still!

I have a very good reason for not getting ruffled when someone asks my kids, "No school today?" I realized that I use it too! How can that be? I'm a forward thinking homeschooling mom and I use such a cliche term. What's wrong with me?

Simply put, I don't know what to say when the neighbor kids drop by. I fall back on the obvious as a way to communicate, to interact with my young visitor. I suppose it is the child equivalent of "Nice weather we're having," "How about that game last night?" or "How are you today?" Perhaps I should start gathering a list of child-friendly awkward silence fillers while I'm standing in the doorway, waiting for Sierra to put her shoes on.

"Play any good games lately?"
"What a nice pair of shoes! Are they new?"
"Don't you have a birthday coming up?"
"I hear there is a new Wii coming out."

Or maybe I can tell Sierra to put her shoes on outside.

My husband is a good dad. He works hard, but helps with the dishes. He is our straight man, but still manages to get a joke in here and there. And he has always supported our homeschooling. I know I'm lucky. This is the first present you will be getting for Father's Day, honey. I thought we should share it, just in case there are some other special dads out there that need to see it.

Wow. I had no idea this comic strip would end up sounding like this week! And it isn't over. I'm not sure how much time I'll have over this weekend, so I will apologize now if my comic strip is late next week. And if anyone would like to borrow my life so that I can take a break...

My dear friend Erynn has a gift for organizing classes and events. While I would be content to spend all of my time socializing with one or two homeschooling families and do our "formal" schooling on my own,Erynn has organized writing groups, reading groups, science class, art class, ballroom dance, etc. If  she says we will only do one particular class on a particular day, I smile, knowing that by the end of the term there will be 2 or 3 activities on that day. Some of these I've gone to, but many times I opt out.

This is not to say that my way or her way is better. I am simply trying to show the diversity in my homeschooling group. If Erynn had not organized the art class, I would not have taken it over and ended up drawn back into my artistic roots. I admire her stamina, but I also know my limits and my children's limits. On the plus side, if I ever need an event arranged, I know that my dear friend will be there for me, bringing in new families with various talents to share with our group.

I've spoken before of the news that New York will be ending its special services for homeschoolers. The New York Times published an article about the issue on April 20. This is an issue that should be of great concern to homeschoolers in my state, whether or not they receive special services. The following quote is particularly troubling to me:

"Now the state is urging school districts to offer students the opportunity to enroll in their local public schools, where services would be continued."

This continues to sound like blackmail to me. Enroll your children in school, or we won't provide services. And if you decide to continue homeschooling, be prepared to tell us how you are going to accommodate your child's special needs.
Private school students will continue to receive special education services. Only homeschoolers are affected by this decision. The NY Times article failed to mention this.

Here is a link to the memo on the NYS Education Department website. The NY Home Educator's Network (NYHEN) also has information on this topic under Legislative Issues.
