There was a time when my kids thought I knew everything. I think it was the few minutes right before they learned how to read. Then came the corrections. Suddenly, the mouse was a shrew. Anyone can see that it's a centipede, not a millipede. No, Mom, you forgot about (insert middle of story that I left out). Yes, I knew that, it was in the newspaper yesterday. That wasn't what happened in the movie/book/television show. What Shakespeare REALLY meant was...
OK, I threw that last one in, but I'm sure it will eventually happen.
So just who's homeschooling whom?

This was an actual idea we came up with while reading our favorite mystery series by Elizabeth Peters. And yes, I am the slowest reader in the room, partially due to motherly distractions. We do enjoy reading and discussing our books together. Mysteries in particular are fun to pick apart. Everyone manages to notice different clues while reading!
We are still reading the latest Harry Potter. Our approach is the same. We are taking it chapter by chapter, trying to figure out what will happen, throwing out theories and opinions. Reading really brings us together.

When we homeschool, things get messy. I've mentioned before that my children tend to have rather unconventional desks. This set me in a panic during my third pregnancy. I was sure that the baby would choke on something in our cluttered little house once she started crawling. About six months after Sierra was born I found the Flylady system. Our house was as clean and decluttered as it had ever been because of tips from this site. And you know what? Sierra still found the one lone bead in a corner of the room to stick in her mouth. Can't say I didn't try.

Note: Actual hubby has never gotten this tired from trying to get the kite to fly. He has ended up pretty sweaty and out of breath. I believe that if the wind isn't with you, it's pointless to run. But from my personal observations, dads like to run. I guess it's a dad-guy thing. Nothing makes you a hero like getting two sticks wrapped in paper to dance in the sky!
I know you are all itching to fly a kite now! Here is a site we found when we were learning how a kite flies. http://www.skratch-pad.com/kites/fly.html

One of my hubby's favorite activities with the kids is kite flying. Or at least, trying to fly kites. Sometimes, nature can be very uncooperative. Winds disappear. Trees appear. Small children suddenly start running off while you're trying to pull the kite down...whoops, different story (not even about Sierra!). Anyway, I dedicate this week's strips to hubby. Enjoy daddy's adventures in kite flying.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program. This week, in honor of Fathers' Day, I'm celebrating all the homeschooling dads out there. We have one in our group. When I decided to do this series, I asked him what it was like being a stay-at-"home"(who among us really stays at home?), homeschooling dad. I guess I've either known him too long--our kids have been friends for 6 or 7 years now--or I just don't surprise easily, I couldn't remember what my own thoughts were the first time I met him. So these strips will be based on his thoughts about being a homeschooling father.
