Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - Backyard Pools & Hot Days...
I was just reading through some of the other blogs and Nancy was writing about their WalMart pool that took 6 hours to set up...got me thinking about our recent pool adventure.
After a VERY hot & humid day last week, I decided to save a few bucks this summer by not getting the $250 city pool pass for our family of 6 and purchase one of those fancy (cheap) backyard pools with the filter, etc. Great deal at Walgreens $80.00 - $20.00 rebate = $60.00 for a 10" X 30" pool. Yes, it was kind of a pain to put together. I was sweating like a hog.
..but it wasn't as hard to put together as Nancy's in KY :) And oh the fun the boys had after we got it filled up!
The neighbor girls came over and played for hours that day and for the next 2 days. I finally got to meet their Mom, invited them to our church's VBS, great outreach BUT......Just a warning for ya....make sure the pump/filter is working.
Yesterday at church I noticed my 9 y.o. son had a very red face. Upon closer examination he had these red/pimple like bumps all over his face! I lifted his shirt up and they were also on his back and stomach. My other 2 sons had some of the red bumps too but not as many. It looked worse this morning so I took him to the Dr. ... so long story short ... he has a skin infection caused by the bacteria from the pool -- oral antibiotics for a week, Zyrtec antihistamine that won't make him sleepy! And the 2 neighbor girls that swam with us have the bumps too! Nice way to impress the neighbors, huh? The Dr. said it is a pretty common thing to happen ..mostly public pools and also hot tubs where the water is warm and the bacteria grows rapidly.
Arrggg..
.. after paying the $20 co-pay at the Dr. and the $40 in medication .....
.....maybe we ought to get the city pool pass after all and cut down on our water bill...

I've heard two other pool stories since then. One the guy decided that he was going to run the electricity from the house and ended up discovering a sink and some subfloor that needed to be replaced. The second involved a bunch of drinking farm hands splashing around a little too much and one ended up with a trip to the ER with a broken bone. Those cheap pools can add up to a lot of trouble! LOL!!
Blessings,
