We've been doing some reading this week! This week's preschool theme (M's homeschool work) is Jungle.
Eight Silly Monkeys. Similar to Five Little Monkeys, but with a twist! Very nice book. Brand new at our library; who doesn't love brand new books??? I've discvered that W loves rythme. This book holds his attention as does the nursery rhyme one (mostly the Itsy Bitsy Spider) but with his love of music and beat I should have expected that!
Betsy-Tacy and Tib. This is our "read-aloud"; we read chapter one last night before bed.
Rumble In The Jungle. A well used book from our library. A lovely poem about the animals in the jungle.
The New Baby Calf (again) We need to get more books by this illustrator (Barbara Reid) because the girls were quite intrigued by her plasticine pictures.
My Bedtime Book of Favorite Nursery Rhymes (again) I think I may have to get us a copy of this book! W loves loves loves it. Well, they all do. It's been well read and very very well treated!
Hug K can read this book. But I think there are a total of 10 different words in the whole book.
Doodle Dog in Space. I didn't read this one to them. I think CJ was looking at it at rest time one day.
My Truck Book (again) Another one I need to buy for W. He loves this book too.
Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories - Two Pockets Please. The girls loved this story. It's a story about a little boy who wore out his pants and in his bedtime prayer, prayed for a new pair of pants, with 2 pockets please. I love how short they are and that they get a lesson across quickly. The girls always want me to read more than one!
Totally Amazing Spiders - CJ, our resident bug person, was amazed at some of the pictures in this book. There is a lot of information and I don't often sit down and read these types of books to the girls but they love to look at the pictures and have me read the captions for the pictures.
Popcorn (again). This is just a fun halloween story!
My first ABC book. K told me one day that a book we had in our collection had 27 letters in the alphabet! I was very confused! So she went and got this book and counted and re-counted the letters at the beginning of the book. The first time she did get 27 but then she got the 26. This is a big book! The pictures are bright and colorful with a wide range of items for each letter.
Next week the preschool theme will be kittens, so I'm hoping our books come in to the library on time. I am moving on with The Hidden Art of Homemaking and The Five Love Languages of Children. I don't usually read two books at once, but I think I can handle these two. They are pretty light reading.
I hope you find some good reading here and if not at least are a little bit aware of what we are reading!
I'm putting these books separate because we haven't actually read them. I've skimmed through them and read bits and pieces. They look so interesting with lots of little facts. These are books that will be used with our Canada Study.
M is for Maple A Canadian Alphabet is a great overview of Canada facts. Not only does the verse have facts in it but the author has also put facts int he sidebar that match with the letter of the page. I learned reading this book!!
The Kids Book of Canada is a brief overview of each of the provinces including a timeline of when each joined Canada. Then there are also short paragraphs about each provinces' bird, flower, coat of arms, flag and other such things. The main industries are listed and described. Again, I learned just skimming through the pages.
Crazy about Canada is different than these others, in that two cartoon characters go through asking questions and finding answers about Canada. The book doesn't talk so much about the provinces and territories as it talks about the animals and the land itself and finally some history and such.
I have bought all four of these books for our study and I know we'll use more from the library as well as the internet. These are great resources for the elementary grades or for anyone interested in just learning a little about my country.
The Fairy Berry Bake-Off Did you know that Tinker Bell was a pots and pans fix it fairy??? It's a whimsical story. A step into reading book. Step 4.
The Diamond Castle A Barbie Fairy story. whimsical and magical. a step into reading book. Step 2.
The New Baby Calf . I love love love this book! I believe the author is Canadian and the pictures are by Barbara Reid (the one that does plasticine pictures. Gorgeous! And rhythmic. I need to buy a new copy though as mine is missing the last picture and the back cover. Well loved!
When Cows Come Home. Our theme for M's preschool this week has been cows. This was a cute book.
My Bedtime Nursery Rhymes. This is a sweet book. The pictures are stitched felt. I loved reading it to the children. They loved it and have been reading this particular book over and over again.
Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories. I had this and four other volumes (1-5) growing up. And I think I've convinced my parents to sell them to me. (Right, Mom?) I've read two stories out of this book to the kids and they are really enjoying them. The stories we read were Just A Minute Kaya (I thought it was Janet, but this book has Kaya) and After Dark. Just A Minute Kaya is about a little girl who doesn't obey and come when she's called. A story about obedience. After Dark teaches about sharing and how much fun sharing can be.
My Truck Book (Smithsonian) W has loved this book! It is borrowed from the library and was brand brand new. Was being the word! He has ripped the front cover (a board book, no less) and the back and at least one page! But he loves loves loves it and reads it over and over and over. The first page - a fire truck! I think I'll just offer to buy it and keep it for him!
Snack Attack Kristyn could read this book if she really tried. It is a Ready-To-Read book, Level 1. I thought it was a silly book, but they thought it was hilarious. Have a read. It's a surprise ending.
Betsy-Tacy by Maud Lovelace. If you have never read or listened to this story, you should! It is sweet, well written and gives a wonderful description of life in small town America in the . . . . honestly I don't know what year, but I'm guessing 1950s. There is even a Betsy-Tacy Society. We will be moving on to read the next in the series as I can't find an audiobookin our library system. The next book is called Betsy-Tacy and Tib.
I've been still struggling through The Hidden Art of Homemaking. And it's not because the book is hard to read. Honestly, it's because I committed to writing a post about each chapter and find it very hard to go on reading the next chapter if that post is not written and posted. I'm loving this book. The last chapter was on Flower Arranging. Loved it! I'll post about it soon and move on to the next chapters.
In our homeschooling, our Bible lesson has seen us learning about Moses and the Ten Commandments and the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abendigo. (Not positive on the spelling, forgive me.)
Oh and the C.O.W. Bus gave us new books, so we'll be getting into reading those. You'll hopefully hear about those next week. While on the C.O.W. Bus we looked at some really neat books that were puzzles and you had to put the pieces on the correct page. Those were neat.
Pinky Dinky Doo in Shrinky Pinky - this is also a children's program! I really like Pinky Dinky Doo. She's silly and fun. You can watch full episodes here and other fun things too.
The following were read at the library's summer reading program:
Well, after a long break from reading it, I've gotten back into The Hidden Art of Homemaking. I don't know why I took the break but that's where life was. I've commented on Chapter 5 already and will start reading chapter 6 today.
We haven't really been reading all that much lately. With summer here and such the children are outside a lot! And we've discovered the library as a great resource for dvds. Our vcr broke and so we started ordering dvds from the library. We're watching a lot of the kinda classic stuff - Lion King and Shrek "series".
