"Book work" for today
K and I were going through the Grade one ACSI Math Chapter Tests. She did very well up to and including Chapter 3. She had a lot of fun doing them. Then we hit Chapter 4. We haven't covered much on time. So she didn't get most of it. So I thought, okay, I'll just do some extra time stuff and moved on to Chapter 5. Well, chapter 5 is about position words and word problems! Goodness, we never even talked about it! So okay another chapter in the grade one book to do. Chapter six?? Place Value. She probably knows the concept but wouldn't know how to explain it or do it on paper.
My decision as of this morning is to buy a second grade one book for CJ. K started at page one of the Grade one math this morning. We'll save the grade two book for later. She is loving doing these pages even if they are easy. We did the first 9 pages in less than an hour. She wanted to do more but I could tell that she was done; her attention was wandering to other things. At least I know she loves math and doing this workbook! I am very thankful to my friend Gabby for pointing in ACSI's direction!
Know what we did ALL afternoon???? Played Canada-opoly!!! For like 3 hours! It's supposed to be for ages 8 to adult. Well, my 6.5 and 5.5 year olds did awesome. It held their attention. They learned counting and some about money and buying and selling and how "unfair" the cards can be!! They learned some facts about Canada too. They can't wait to play it again!
So I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. Math workbook in the AM and Canada-opoly in the afternoon!! When or when will the housework get done???? Maybe while Grandpa and Grandma are here - they can take over the homeschooling and I can catch up with the housework!

Our Homeschooling "Curriculum" So Far
We were so excited today when in the mail arrived a box from CHER. Inside we found most of what I had ordered. (By the way, CHER is a great store! I love ordering from them. The customer service is friendly and efficient!) So, our learning materials so far include:
Draw, Write, Now! Books 1, 2, 3
ACSI Mathematics 1 & 2
Canada, My Country
Canada-opoly
Bug-opoly (haven't received yet)
Penpal letters
Various Unit Studies
Lapbooking
Copywork, as needed (using penpal letters for most of their writing stuff)
Internet and computer programs / games
UB David + I'll B Jonathan (Mailbox Club type program)
BOB Books for learning to read
All About Spelling
That's all I can think of right now. Other than the regular stuff - library programs, shopping, going to the playground, church, visiting with family and friends. I'd like to find and include a good character building "curriculum" too but I haven't found exactly what I want.

A Tour of the Fire Hall

My four fire fighters! Home, after a long day at the hall. (We were only there for a couple hours.)

K, age 6.

CJ, age 5.

M, age 2 (almost 3).

W, age 1. (always eating, this one.)
We joined the Kindergarten classes from the local public school for a tour of the fire hall, trucks and ambulance. Now, being that Daddy is a fire fighter, we've been there before. We've ridden in the trucks and heard the horns and sirens. But it was still fun. They were able to interact with the other students and they loved that.
It was so hot. We left the house early and got slushies and a little lunch and ate on a park bench between home and the hall. Then on to the hall. We were a little early so we got to explore a little more on our own and talk to the lady firefighter who was doing the tour.
W and M were so tired because the tour was right when our rest/nap time happens. They did really well though.
She started out by showing them the equipment they have to wear. Then moved on to each of the trucks and what goes in each. The kids really thought the tanker truck was cool. That one got the most questions and comments. The last truck was the pumper. They got to go in and through that one. The firefighter showing it off is the main operator of that truck and she's so proud of it! She did really well.
Just as we thought we were done, the ambulances came back to the hall too. We were able to go through the one and get information about what goes on in there. The girls hadn't experienced that at all so they were really really interested.
They left with those hats they are all wearing. It was a hot day and we were outside for a lot of the tour. So on the way home we stopped for ice cream. A perfect way to end the trip.

Today is Apple Pie Day.
I'm planning to make some pies, but we'll see if we get there! Here's some information found at Practically Edible:
Apple Pie Day
13 May
It's hard to know why anyone would pick May for Apple Pie Day, when apples are not in season (in the Northern Hemisphere, at least) and even the better keeping ones in storage are fast approaching their best-before date -- though maybe the idea is to use up the ones that are on the edge of going manky and disguise them in a pie. In a way, perhaps having the day at this time of year really only makes sense in the Southern Hemisphere, in Australia and New Zealand, where apple harvesting season is just getting into swing. Or perhaps the idea just is that it will have been so long since people had an apple pie in the fall, that they will be longing for one.
Some schools make Apple Pie Day a day when grandmothers come to school and teach young students how to make apple pies. The pies are then donated to charitable organisations. Some schools in the states hold such Apple Pie Days in the fall, so that the pies can be donated at Thanksgiving to organizations feeding the poor or homeless.
- In Virginia, the 26th of January is recognized by the state government as Apple Pie Day, by virtue of State Resolution § 2.2-3303;
- The town of Rifle, Colorado, holds its Apple Pie Day in September;
- Other locations hold theirs in October;
- Orgeon holds their Apple Pie Day in May for people who educate their kids at home. The parents bring in apple pies for their legislators (all 90 of them, as of 2005), and one for the state governor. They use the opportunity to show their faces and promote home schooling. They bring their children, too -- it is not known what legislators think seeing the kids not at home in school. The children do get to visit the legislators, volenteer as honorary pages, sing in a home school choir, tour the Capitol Buildings, etc. The parents get educated on the legislative process and hold an Apple Pie Day rally.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests trying a healthier alternative, such as a baked apple with just some cinnamon sprinkled on it. Feh.
Literature & Lore
There's even a song for Apple Pie Day. It's sung to the tune of "Happy Birthday to you".
"Apple Pie Day to you,
Apple Pie Day to you,
Apple Pie Day, Apple Pie Day,
Apple Pie Day to you."
