What a long week

I don't know why it seemed so long, but it just dragged out.  We've got one more week of August, and to be honest, I can hardly wait till it's over.  No special reason other than I'm ready to be done with it.

We've been watching a lot of news this week.  I'm going to incorporate it into the girls daily studies so I thought I should get them ready for it.  They actually seemed to take an interest in it, which surprised me.

On the 21st we went to the zoo.  That was a super nice day, but goodness was it hot. The animals were simply miserable.  We're going to head back in the fall and spend the day there again and hopefully the animals will be up to their regular activities.

Tuesday we had a pre-meeting homeschool meeting meeting.. lol.  The board members came together to decide what they wanted to happen at the upcoming homeschool meeting.  It was nice to hear their input.  I think this year will be run a little different than usual.  It's been the same board members for the last 10 years...so some fresh blood should spice things up.

Gifts from Grandma

Grandma gives the best gifts.  She signed up with DirectTv a couple months back and received a free portable DVD player for doing so.  Yesterday, she brought it over for the girls. When they found out it was a gift for us, they were so excited.  They've been fondling and drooling over it all morning. Ohhh the wonderous joy of a new electronic toy...until mom comes into the picture.

"No you're not watching a movie on it."

"No you may not take it in the car for a 10 minute ride to town."

"No you cannot see it again."

"rawk, squawk, squawk"

After the typical no-no-no's...it came to me... it was like the clouds parted, the sky opened and this brilliant light shone down, making the path ahead of me clear as can be. USE IT AS AN INCENTIVE.

And so I will.  Last year during the school year, the music came on and caused disruption as one kid finished while the other was working.  TV isn't allowed until 4.  PS2 games...nada till the weekend rolls around or on random occassion.  But this... this is good.  Why yes... you can watch a movie (preapproved) or listen to music on the DVD player.  Make sure to use the headphones, ok?

Like I said... Grandma gives the best gifts.  The DVD player to the girls and the headphones to me.

Who we are

Hi!  We're Kathie, Sarah & Kelly... owners, operators, employees, teachers, & students of KSK Learning Center which is at the center of our Homeschool Daze. I know that sounds kinda silly to say we have all those jobs, but it's true.  Just as much as mom is responsible for the day to day learning, so are the girls.  We each pitch in and take turns getting things done.   Sometimes the teacher of the class isn't always the oldest.  It's amazing how much a child can learn and then turn it around and teach an adult something.

Well, this is our fourth year homeschooling.  When we decided to pull them out, Sarah had completed 7th grade & Kelly finished grade 3. There were many reasons why we started homeschooling.  It was something we had wanted to do for a long time, but I lacked the confidence in myself to begin.  And the school district...well, we won't go there, but that was a deciding factor also.

It's not hard to see that the girls love homeschooling.  We have plenty of opportunity for socialization and when people say, 'yes, but they don't get to see their friends on a day to day basis'... I try to reason with the response, 'but when they were in school, they weren't allowed to chat their friends up, they were told to sit and hush and listen.  How is that socializing?'

Anyhow, we work from a wide assortment of textbooks.  There are so many different kinds of curriculum that deciding on what to use was very hard.  So I chose many different kinds instead of just one set and as of right now, I'm very happy with it.  After a couple of years of homeschooling, this is still the best route for us.  We enjoy going through the Rainbow Resource catalog and deciding what to use for each subject.

I'm very fortunate to have the support of my family in this venture.   I feel very confident in knowing that if I needed help in a subject and one of them could cover it, I think they would be there to say "what can I do."   And I'm always happy to answer questions and wouldn't mind showing the girls work off if ever asked.  Some of the portrayals of homeschool families on television have been less than kind and I'd gladly show how opposite we are of that.

I invite you to visit all our pages and get to know us and see what we're doing.  And if you're new to homeschooling or thinking about it, trust in yourself and know that you can do it!  It takes a couple of months for the 'new' light to pop on, instead of what they're used to, but when it does, watch out!
