SCRIPTURES

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful." ~ John 14:26-27 (NASB)

Aug. 25, 2008 - Update on AnnaBell

I had a comment posted asking for an update about my Jack Rat (Jack Russell and Rat Terror mix). She has finished her 4-days of deflametories, and now we are on the regiment of every other day.

As of today, five days later, she is great. She still shivers (doc says pain) every once in the while, especially when she gets too active and plays to hard. For this, I have been keeping her in her cage. I do let her out to play, an hour at a time, then back into cage she goes. Also, when company comes over I can't have her out because she wants to hop up and down which is not very healthy for her right now.

We will be taking her back for X-Rays in a week to make sure everything is alright with her.

Thank you so much for asking. Please forgive me for being inconsiderate of not keeping you all updated.

Aug. 25, 2008 - WHOLESOME MOVIES TO WATCH WITH YOUR FAMILY

I am posting this list of recommended movies so I can keep record of them myself. This was sent to me from Nancy Campbell on May 27th since I am an avid reader of "Above Rubies." To find more information please visit her website.

Enjoy!!

*******************************************

Disclaimer:

The following movie recommendations have been emailed to me from our Above Rubies subscribers. I rarely have time to watch movies and do not have time to check all the following movies. Therefore, I cannot claim that they will be absolutely according to your standards. There may be many that you may not want to watch. However, I am sure that most of them would be the best that are available.

It will still be your responsibility to check each individual movie. If you are unsure about any movie, check out more information from the following websites before renting or purchasing.

You may like to print off this list for quick referral.

Sources to find good movies:
The following are websites that our readers have recommended to check out the decency of movies you may be interested in watching.

http://christiananswers.net/spotlight/movies
You can click on "excellent" or "good" and a list in alphabetical order will appear. You can then click on any title and see the review and get information on the movie. Hit the back arrow at the top left of the screen to return to the list. This website gives full details and moral rating on everything from what is out at the theater to movie rentals.

www.pluggedinonline.com/movies/ 'Shining a Light on the World of Popular Entertainment'. A Christian source that evaluates movies based on several elements. The author generally gives his take on whether or not the movie is "family friendly".

One reader mentions SKY ANGEL, a Christian satellite service which is much better than cable or other satellite services (and cheaper -$14.99/mo.). It shows all the Creation Science programming! You can get more information at www.skyangel.com

You can purchase a censoring device at Target (called "Clear Play". The link is:http://www.clearplay.com/ ; You then pay a small subscription fee to "clean up" any questionable movies. Another lady writes about ClearPlay. "You can research it on the internet, it's a DVD player, now available at Target for $50.  It uses specialized software and movie specific filters to remove objectionable material from pre-selected movies. The filter is unlike anything you've seen before and removes the material in an almost seamless fashion.  As with all things, this is no substitute for attentive parenting and doesn't necessarily make all the filtered movies acceptable, but it is a beneficial option for our family.  It is not funded by any type of Christian organization, it's simply a family friendly alternative to the excessive language, violence, etc in modern movies."

Recommended Movies:
To find the following movies, do an Internet search for the title. Many can also be rented from your local library.

I will put an asterisk beside the movies that were recommended most frequently. I will also include comments from readers when they gave them. The only comments I have made throughout the list are in italics.

Nearly every person who emailed recommended the following four DVDs. They were the most popular recommendations.

Amazing Grace *
The true story of William Wilberforce and his fight to end the slave trade in the late 1700s in England. John Newton, who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace,"  was a friend of his and together they worked to have the laws changed. There is some cleavage which I really wish they didn't put in there; we black those parts out and just listen to the words. There is a book which prompted the writing of the movie, The Wilberforce Connection. I would highly recommend the book and also the autobiography of John Newton.

Facing the Giants *

Fly Wheel *

Time Changer *
The year is 1890 and Bible professor Russell Carlisle has written a new manuscript entitled "The Changing Times." His book is about to receive a unanimous endorsement from the board members of the Grace Bible Seminary until his colleague Dr. Norris Anderson raises an objection. Dr. Anderson believes that what Carlisle has written could greatly affect the future of coming generations. Using a secret time machine, Anderson sends Carlisle over 100 years into the future, offering him a glimpse of where his beliefs will lead. www.TimeChangerMovie.com

(The courtship is in the tradition of being chaperoned by the matchmaker and having familial permission before a relationship can be established). It was a good vehicle for family discussions about what behaviour is acceptable and what we expect from our children and why.

Aug. 24, 2008 - Christian Kids Explore Chemistry

Since we moved to a new location, Port Saint Lucie, I searched for a local home school group and found two of them. One was open to anyone while the other is ran by Christians but open to whoever to join.

Upon praying about this, the Lord prompted me to look for 4-H clubs in my area. I found one that is home school ran. The moms are even Spirit-filled! How awesome is our God!?!!

For our 4-H project this year, we will be doing "Christian Kids Explore Chemistry." My daughter will be required to do a project for the science fair, a biography on a Scientist and give an oral report on him/her, along with a couple of other requirements.

We are really excited about this!! She will be getting together with about 14 kids within 2-3 years of her age and doing Chemistry together. Below is information on different science fair projects that we are considering to go along with "Christian Kids Explore Chemistry."

  • Can you use a black light to detect invisible spills or smelly stains in carpeting or elsewhere in the house? Can you predict what types of materials will glow under a black light?
  • Will chilling an onion before cutting it keep you from crying?
  • Does catnip repel cockroaches better than DEET?
  • What ratio of vinegar to baking soda produces the best chemical volcano eruption?
  • What fabric fiber results in the brightest tie-die?
  • What type of plastic wrap prevents evaporation the best?
  • What plastic wrap prevents oxidation the best?
  • Which brand of diaper absorbs the most liquid?
  • What percentage of an orange is water?
  • Are night insects attracted to lamps because of heat or light?
  • Can you make Jello using fresh pineapples instead of canned pineapples?
  • Do white candles burn at a different rate than colored candles?
  • Does the presence of detergent in water affect plant growth?
  • What contaminants can be detected in the air around us?
  • What type of car antifreeze is safest to the environment?
  • Do different brands of orange juice contain different levels of vitamin C?
  • Does the level of vitamin C in orange juice change over time?
  • Does the level of vitamin C in orange juice change after the container is opened?
  • Can a saturated solution of sodium chloride still dissolve Epsom salts?
  • How effective are natural mosquito repellents?
  • Does magnetism affect the growth of plants?
  • Do oranges gain or lose vitamin C after being picked?
  • How does the shape of an ice cube affect how quickly it melts?
  • How does the sugar concentration vary in different brands of apple juices?
  • Does storage temperature affect the pH of juice?
  • Does the presence of cigarette smoke affect the growth rate of plants?
  • Do different brands of popcorn leave different amounts of unpopped kernels?
  • How accurately do egg producers measure eggs?
  • How do differences in surfaces affect the adhesion of tape?

here are some websites with more ideas.

Aug. 23, 2008 - The Lord is FULL of blessings!

Just yesterday, I received notice that I was the "Blogger of the Week." I am so thrilled to have people come by to visit me. I just made a comment a couple of days about what to do to get more traffic to my site.... to get out there because I believe many things on my site could be a blessing to so many home school moms. I created my blog originally to be a blessing to other home school moms. It is kinda "scarey" to myself on the front page when I go to log into home school blogger. LOL.

It is such a blessing to me to be used by the Lord. An old friend called me today, and the Lord ministered to her through me in some of the things I had said. We spoke, I guess, close to three hours today. I tell you it was a real "pick-me-upper" to see a familiar phone number come across the caller ID...

This morning, I signed onto my bank account to find it overdrawn. I simply forgot about the automatic withdraw for the security system and the automatic charges from GoDaddy through my PayPal account that evident taken from my checking, which threw my balance into the RED. Instead of GoDaddy charges me one invoice, instead they put through several charges. I did call them to cancel the account, and they did refund the money but that isn't going to pay the overdraft charges.

The money taken out of my account was for gas to fill up my truck. So, I prayed and asked God about not going to Church this week since I didn't have the funds for gas. My daughter shows up this evening, and told me that the Lord told her on the trip to my house to fill out my truck for me. Once again, the Lord blessed me  through my daughter.

I can still remember when I lived my life without knowing Jesus and how rough it really was.... living in the world... living in the pigpen, without Him. I am so grateful that He has chosen me out of my family to hold the torch... to be the light.

It is such an uplifting feeling to me to know that my daughter listens and obeys God. It is a relief to know that He has her in His hands. I can remember not so long ago that He didn't. Thank you Jesus!!

I can't imagine my life without Him!!

Aug. 21, 2008 - Memoirs- About Me

This week, we are to write about ourselves.

My name is Karen, and I wear many hats!!

I am a single, stay-at-home, Children's director at church, and a home school mom of two daughters. One is 21 and the other is 12.

I do work from home allowing myself to have a flexible schedule to training up my youngest in the way she should go.

I am a devout Jesus Freak, and a God Chaser. As my oldest daughter friends say, "I have "gangsta" faith.... meaning once I have my directions, I do it with no questions asked... with no end in mind... with no looking back...

I have a heart to disciple the children that are already in the church... those kids who have been in church for so long they think its boring. You see, the Lord has birthed a seed within me to reach those churched kids for Him. I teach the children that church doesn't have to boring. No, I don't play games but I do teach them the gifts of the Holy Spirit and activate them so (my dream) that these children by the time they are from 16-18 years old they are ready to make an impact in the world by doing mission trips and by the time they are 18+ years old they are profficient in the gifts of the Holy Spirit to minister right along side the adults. My goal is to raise up the Lord's Army with the children already in the church before we lose them too.

Aug. 20, 2008 - Once Again...

Today, I realize once again that God is in control. There is nothing that I can do apart from Him, He is good... all the time.

For the past two days, my dog, AnnaBell has been under the weather. She has been shivering, shaking and panting deeply. I thought it was the tropical storm coming our way that freaked her out, but I was wrong. I took her outside yesterday to potty and she couldn't potty. She whimpered when she tried to arch her back. She tried sitting on the right side and done a complete before she realized she couldn't and switched to the other hip. That didn't last long until she was laying on her belly to potty.

I got emotional and cried my eyes out. This dog is a part of our family. She is like one of my children. Watching her brought me deep sorrow the last two days.

She is a Jack Russell, and well she brings much freshness and excitement in our lives. To see her lifeless really pricks my heart.

We took her to the pet hospital this morning, and the vet fell in love with her because of her disposition. They done a x-ray on her and found that she had severe trauma to her spine. Her spine is inflamed. We caught it early enough to try and save her. I am giving her inflammatory medicine to reduce the pressure between the 4th and 5th vertebrae and this should prevent from calcium being forming the two vertebraes.

My daughter and I laid hands on her and prayed for her. My daughter said she was looking a whole lot better... but  through my tears, I couldn't see much.Over the next day or two we will be watching her, and if there is no improvment then surgery or something worse will have to happen.

We are believing that God has chosen these pills as the avenue to heal one of His creatures that brings us much joy on earth! His Love and Grace endures forever.

Aug. 19, 2008 - Hospital Hospitality

TEACHing Tips - Hospital Hospitality
By Donna Venning

When you hear of a friend or church member that is in the hospital, many of us offer to make meals to bring to their home. It's awesome to see Christians ministering to each other this way (or even better, ministering to non-believing neighbors & co-workers!). But in addition to the meal-at-home idea, I want to challenge you to consider a few things to do while someone is in the hospital. This is often a very trying time for the other family members, who may be spending long hours at the hospital, many days in a row. With that in mind, here are some suggestions geared toward showing care and concern for the patient's family.
MEALS: Meals at hospitals can be expensive. Package up a bag or basket of sandwiches, bottled water, nuts, fruit and other non-refrigerated items and deliver it to the family at the hospital. Many hospital waiting rooms have microwaves, too, so you could even take soup or other dishes that just need a little heating up. Consider many of the "prepared and ready to eat" type of things that you can purchase at the store: no longer just the traditional "cup of soup," you can now purchase pastas and even desserts that simply require the person to heat, eat and toss the container. Don't forget to bring some plastic utensils.
ADD-INS: My stepmother (who has spent more than her fair share of time in hospital waiting rooms) said that she has found that keeping a journal during this time was helpful. Consider putting a journal into the basket with the meals: the journal can be used for the family to write their thoughts or even to keep track of the medical concerns and treatments that the physicians discuss with them. Other thoughtful items to put into the basket: small bible, devotional book or magazine. Offer to lend your Walkman or Portable DVD player (along with a few movies) if you have one. If you have a small tape recorder, offer that to the family: they may want to record what the doctor says when he stops by (see next suggestion).
SIT & WAIT: Waiting for the doctor to stop by and check on the patient is one of the most frustrating parts about being in the hospital. You just never know when they'll make their rounds. Because the patient might be on pain-killers or other medication, family members want to be present in case the doctor shows up. You can call the family and ask if you can some sit with the patient for a while so they can go do errands or get out for a little bit. That way, if the doctor happens to stop by, you can be the coherent ear to gather info. Make sure that if needed, the family member tells the nurse that you have permission to be in the room when the doctor stops by (because of privacy laws, this verbal permission may be needed in order for non-family members to be present when the physician is there.)
CHILDCARE: Does the patient have children at home? Perhaps you could offer to keep the kids for the day or even over night. If you know of other families that the "hospital" family trusts for childcare, you may consider organize a baby-sitting rotation or at least gather names and availability and pass that to the family.
PET CARE: Many of us think to help out with kids, but what about pets? Some people without children have pets that need care (and yes, Dad, this comment is written on your behalf!) Offer to stop by and feed, walk or "let out" the pet. If possible, offer to bring the pet to your home for a few days.
PARKING FEES: Most of the hospitals in my area charge for parking by the hour. If this is the case in your area, stop by the hospital and drop off an envelope at the nurses' station or volunteer station with $20 in it (writing the patient's or their family members name & room number on it). Include a note saying "Praying for you. Park on us!" Don't sign your name. . .anonymity can be a fun thing!
CALL BEFORE VISITING: Would the family like company or would they prefer that you simply drop off your meal, your flowers, etc and leave? If the best thing for the patient is rest, then be considerate. Staying to visit may seem like the most hospitable thing to do, but in reality, a brief ten minute visit may be all that the patient (or family) can take. Tell the family to be honest and let you know their needs. If they don't want visitors but you really want to bring them a meal or care basket, then drop your items off at the nurses' station with a note telling the family you're praying for them.
And speaking of prayers, in addition to praying for the family, ask them if there is anyone they would like you to call or email with an update or prayer request. When my father was recently in the hospital, my stepmother didn't make it to church for three Sundays in a row, but she asked that I fill out a "prayer request" for our church bulletin each week so that others could be praying.
ASK & LISTEN: Call your friend just to talk. Begin the conversation by saying "I was just calling to chat. Is this a good time?" This way, if they're in a "waiting period" they can fill the time talking with you but it also gives them the chance to say "no" if it isn't a convenient time. Let them talk about what's going on or about the weather-whatever they need. Sometimes, the waiting goes on and on, and a conversation with a friend is just what the doctor ordered (for the family, not the patient!). Be supportive and caring, but let them guide the conversation. Don't force them to talk about the medical concerns if they don't want to, but do ask how they are doing. It's tempting for many people to answer that question with "Fine. I'm fine." Instead, try asking "Have you been able to get some rest?" or "Have you been able to have some reading time?" or something more specific like that. Chances are they need to talk about how they are doing, but sometimes feel guilty, like they should only be concerned about the ill family member. Asking specifics about them, without pressing, can be a relief for them. And finally, don't ask if there is "anything" you can do to help. Many people say "Call me if I can do anything" but very rarely will the other person call. Instead, be specific. Ask "Can I stop by your house and water your plants?" Have a few specific suggestions in mind before you call so that you are prepared to offer. Chances are you'll get taken up on a specific request whereas general offers are usually declined.

Aug. 14, 2008 - Why We Homeschool

Why We Homeschool

All Scripture is quoted in NASB unless notated.

...as an act of obedience to God.

“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD?  To obey is better than sacrifice…” ~ I Samuel 15:22

“… Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” ~ Matthew 22:21

...to serve God.

“…as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” ~ Joshua 24:15

...to train my daughter in righteousness AND in life skills.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” ~ Proverbs 22:6

...to discover the God-given calling and raise them to fulfill it by directing lessons to cultivate passion within them to pursue God.

Also, just as spiritual gifts need to be fanned into flame, so, too, do gifts bestowed upon us during our physical formation by God:

"…fan into flame the gift of God.”

2 Timothy 1:6

…to encourage my daughter to be stewards of the gifts and talents that God has given to her.

The Parable of the Talents, Matthew 25:14-30.

...for the glory of God.

“Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do,

do all to the glory of God.” ~ I Corinthians 10:31

...to teach my daughter that God is Creator.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” ~ Genesis 1:1

...to teach my daughter that God is their Creator.

For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.” ~ Psalm 139:13, 14

...to teach my daughter to love the Lord their God with all their heart and soul and strength every possible moment.

“The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” ~ Deuteronomy 6:4-9

...to teach my daughter that Scripture thoroughly equips her for every good work.

“…and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” ~ 2 Timothy 3:15-17

...to teach my daughter that God will take care of ALL our needs, if we seek God first and His righteousness.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” ~ Matthew 6:33

Also see Daniel, chapter 1

...to teach my daughter the fear of the Lord.

“You shall fear the LORD your God; and you shall serve Him…”

~ Deuteronomy  10:20

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, fools despise wisdom and instruction.” ~ Proverbs 1:7

Aug. 13, 2008 - Obama and infanticide?

This is the 'creative hand of God' destroyed by the 'creative hand of man'! Oh, what good this hand could have done - saved lives, educated, legislated, governed, discovered, or maybe even rocked the cradle of a new generation!

Take a look at this video on Obama’s support of infanticide:

http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=VIdbYjmbFzo

I don't have TV, but you know that can NOT be an excuse for not being informed! I just received the link below in an email earlier, and my heart is broken! After watching the YouTubeVideo, I began to do a google search for more information to confirm the truth in the matter. I was shocked!!

The lady who is speaking on this video, is actually a mom who has spoken at the local homeschool group. I am not a member of, but our dance teacher was and validated who she is.

**************

Father God in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, I pray for those souls that are not yet born, still a fetus in the womb. Grow each fetus for your purpose my Lord.

Awaken the souls of Your people to see the lies and deceit that is going before their faces. Father, rescue these babies that are aborted and those who are born and then throw aside. Father, I ask that all those saved through Christ would intercede and pray for the unborn and born babies, and also for the souls and lives of the mothers and fathers. May followers of Christ do all they can to stop abortion and infanticide using the spiritual weapons that you have given us.

May we not stand by and allow false Christians to preach hate and condemnation rather than God’s love and grace through Christ. May we extend forgiveness unto women who have had abortions in the past and show them love, so that they will not receive future abortions. May we not be focused on the past sinful behavior but future renewal for the mother, the father, and the child through Christ.

Please Lord, may these urgent issues claim the attention of the saints, many of whom have fallen victim to the vain distractions of the enemy. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

**************

Satan and evil aren’t stupid enough to come out and say to the average person, “Hey, let’s do evil stuff!” Satan is subtle, a "good guy", who says ‘let’s compromise.’ We can find common ground. God didn’t REALLY say THAT, did He?

Aug. 12, 2008 - From "Schedules" to "To Do List"

We had another wonderful day in the Lord!

I have tell you of my past struggles i have had. Before I came to know Jesus as my Savior, I was "Ms. Corporate America" who owned and ran her own business that included two handfuls of employees to boot. While contending for the TITLE, I carried around my "day planner." It was my "bible." (Please forgive me Lord). I couldn't start my day without looking at my schedule. I had every minute I could possibly squeeze out of a day accounted for. Things from drive time to telephone time.

A hurricane did come and visited us shortly after a couple of months bringing my daughter to and from the job to school her. This forced me home, well OK, not really because during this time the Lord was really speaking to me about being the woman that is written in Titus2. The Lord opened that door for me, and I praise Him for it. Four years later, I am still at home. Glory to Him!

So basically, the WHOLE time I have been homeschooling, I have NOT been able to keep a schedule. I struggled with this for the longest time. I would read about all these other families who had schedules and from 8-8:30 they done this and at 2 they went to the Library, then back home by 4:30 to cook dinner for hubby.... I felt I was inferior because I couldn't keep a schedule.

I would do up a schedule only to get stressed out by it. I would stress out because it look longer than 45 minutes to do Math, or longer than 10 minutes to get to the Library. Before I knew it I was losing my temper with my daughter. Totally, not what I was to do. You could say that I felt that her failures in not keeping with the schedule made me inadequate as a mom!

Back in April, the Lord smacked me in the forehead and asked me, "Who do you think you are?"  It was pretty obvious who I thought I was,.... was nothing what the Lord showed me. I did not like what the Lord had showed me. I repented for my wrong notion, wrong attitude, and my wrong behavior. I repented for passing judgment upon my child. I repented for giving her unrealistic expectations and scolded her for not keeping with the schedule.

I have to say the Lord has done a mighty work within me, but He isn't even close to being done. LOL. After three years of struggling with this, the Lord has set me FREE!! The Lord released me from bondage!!

You see, I was putting myself into "bondage" by forcing ourselves onto a time schedule. The Lord revealed to me that I was just like the Isreallites.  God released them from bondage, and they wasn't happy so they wanted to return to bondage. That is EXACTLY what I tried to do!!

Since my forehead smackin', I sought the Lord as what we were to do. I know it is very important to "stay on task." I also know how easy it is to get side-track and lose two hours. I really felt the Lord impress upon me to make out "To Do List."

Each morning, we will take our "To Do List" to the Lord and ask Him to remove anything we shouldn't do that day, and to allow us to do what He wants us to do. Then, we simply follow His lead. Now, this beloved is FREEDOM!!! Freedom of being in bondage; freedom from trying to go back into bondage.

You know, even the name "to Do List" gives me a sense of security and freedom! God is simply amazing!

Now ladies, if you use a time schedule, then that's awesome!! You need to do what the Lord is leading you to do for your family. Please do not let my life to discourage you in yours. I originally started this blog to be a blessing to other homeschool moms, and that is what I still strive to do.

"The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever." ~ Psalm 121:8 (NASB)
