More Reading

Here's Roman reading to Kate.  He's so madly in love with her -- it's sweet.  Tonight, we tried something new.  I set the timer for 2 minutes and Roman had to talk non-stop to her in Russian the whole time.  He's pretty quiet (typical engineer), so it's important for us to be deliberate about the whole thing.

Reading

Well,  last night I read through four chapters of the Charlotte Mason Companion: Vocabulary, Picture Study, Music Appreciation, and Shakespeare.  This is pretty inspiring stuff, but I'm curious to hear what other people think.  I also have a Sonlight Curriculum catolog, but I find it confusing.

For Kate who is 18 months old, we do "exercises" from Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready.   I read to her; I talk to her; we watch a Talking Hands video (excellent); and I try to do Russian-English reading with my hubby.  She gets lots of Russian when she goes to Babushka's house.  We go to story times at the library, park days with the local attachment parenting group, and two music classes.

What more should we be doing?  Thoughts?

The Work Out Blues

I found a group of women that work out at 5:30 am (M,W,F).  Now the idea here was that I would go to workout and my dh would sleep until his usual time, get Kate up and take her with him to the worksite--where I would meet him at the door.  A hand-off would be made; he would go into work and I would take Kate to whatever activity we had planned.  Well, on Monday, the little lady woke up at 5 am, apparently right after I left (and I was QUIET) and wailed enough so that Pops (who sleeps though everything) took her into bed with him so that he could go back to sleep.  Hmmm. Guess what happened on Wednesday?  And this is the child that has slept in her own bed and in her own bedroom since she was 1 week old.  I'm going to try this for another week, and then make a decision.  The change in daylight savings comes this weekend, and might be perfect for our situation.  I don't want to train her in a bad habit that we'll just have to correct later.

My First Entry

Well, wouldn't you know it that as soon as I create my first Blog, that I'm wishing I'd used a different name.  I'm mom to Kate who will be One and a half tomorrow.  Though I don't know for sure if we'll be homeschooling, I started researching hs after my daughter was born and I figure I have four years to educate myself about homeschooling before I need to know what I'm talking about.

I struggled with the decision to start a blog here vs. at homestead.  I feel a bit silly starting at homestead when I live in the hood ( a mild one, but one none the less ).

The only thing I know about homemaking is what I've learned on FlyLady.com and what I learned I needed to change about my homemaking skills in marriage counseling. [Ouch !]

Today, I'm taking Kate to Music Together.  The class is in an old barracks bungalow on a bluff overlooking the Pacific.  We'll go early so that we can walk around and enjoy the yummy air they get up there.
