Bears win...24-23!!!!!

Posted in family

I am probably at an all-time low for blogging material.  I really do want to primarily use this site for homeschool stuff, and recently I have endulged you with stories about toilets, spiders and now bears.  But if we truly believe that homeschooling is life-learning, then in some twisted way all of those things do apply...right? (OK..the potty story is a stretch in that regard!)  So, as I tell you my latest and greatest news, I will make it applicable by telling you what my children learned from this experience.  OK, here we go...

Last night, in the cold, blowing rain, after ballet, a damp trip to Costco, and an equally damp trip at the drive-up at Sonic, the three of us (me, Annaleigh and Harrison...Damon was working late) set out for my Mom's apartment to watch Monday Night Football, Chicago Bears vs. Arizona Cardinals.

The lessons:

 1.  That I can't get out of Costco for less than $100.  The kids still think having $5 in their banks is a big deal, so when the cashier said, "That will be $125.63, Mrs. Adelgren,"  I had to pinch Annaleigh for saying, wide-eyed, "Oh my gosh, Mom.  You spent A LOT!"

2. There are a few reasons I will let them stay up past 8:30 on a weeknight:  a.  Church-related things  b.illness and c. important sports events that only come on cable.

We get there, and I am actually expecting that we may leave early because the Bears are probably stomping the Cardinals to death (The Bears entered this game 5-0 and the Cardinals were 1-4).  The first thing Mom says is, "It's 7-0, Cardinals."  Oh boy...  So we sit down to eat our "meal" and watch a hideous first half where the Cardinals continue to rack up points, and we enter half-time with a big goose egg.  Annaleigh, who had not finished her math, was banished to the kitchen table to work on it.  I didn't think this was a big deal, since she always says she  hates football.

The lessons:

1.  They can get away with eating junk, including extra brownies, when their Mom and Mimi are wrapped up in a tense football game.

2.  Annaleigh likes football better than math...or at least she pretends to.

So we go into halftime pretty discouraged.  Again, I'm thinking we should probably just leave.  I mean it's pretty unlikely the Bears are going to recover from this.  But we linger anyway and watch the halftime show and listen to the commentators berate the Bears offensive performance.

The lessons:

1.  Rap videos, even when premiering on ESPN for a family audience, are still inappropriate.

2.  Arizona's quarterback, Matt Leinhert, has gone out with Paris Hilton, which was just one more reason to root for the Bears.

The second half begins, and we must have reached for our jackets half a dozen times to leave only to have the Bears do something miraculous.  We end up staying to the last second because the BEARS WON 24-23 AND ARE STILL UNDEFEATED.

The lessons:

1.  Harrison really will sleep through anything....including screaming, crying, stomping and jumping up and down, all taking place within three feet of where he is conked out.

2.  My Mom is in trouble if anything bad ever happens to her in her apartment because apparently no amount of screaming, crying, stomping or jumping up and down illicits any kind of response from her neighbors....and this was 11:00pm.

3.  The Bears can win a football game without an offense.  Seriously.

So there you go.  If there are any concerned parties out there, wondering if we are still doing anything educational, now you can sleep at night.  The Adelgrens are still learning by leaps and bounds.  Go Bears!!!

Can I just say, I'm not totally sure I am actually part of this family! How did I end up the ONLY non-football fan in this family? I'm glad the Bears won. I still have loyalty to Chicago, but I think it's more out of habit than any real loyalty. I would never scream or cry over a football game!
