Sibling Rivalry

What do you get when both of your kids take taekwondo?

Complex and expensive emergency room bills.  I'm just kidding, of course.  Yet as I snapped this photo a few weeks ago, the thought ran through my head, "Wow....they are being trained to kill each other."

Two Saturdays ago they went to a tournament.  This was, I think, one of my favorite tournaments of all time because

A. it was local,

B. it was Annaleigh's first tournament,

and C. both kids placed.

I will have to post some pictures from it later.  I didn't take many with my camera, and I've yet to download Damon's onto my computer.

I have a teeny confession to make.  In the beginning, I thought taekwondo was the most boring sport I'd ever encountered.  I remember the first testing we went to for Harrison about 2.5 years ago, I felt like I had to prop my eyelids open with toothpicks in order to keep from sliding right out of my uncomfortable folding chair.  Over the years and events I've actually gained some appreciation and insight into the sport to where it is more to me than people fighting in their pajamas.  I've also learned to bring a book and find another mom who is as bored as I am to chat with.

We got there early to watch some of their friends compete in the Extreme Forms round.  This is optional when you get to the black belt level, and it is where you make up your own form set to music with at least 3 extreme moves (gymnastic type).  Harrison is actually working on one to compete in the next competition in October.

Then it was Harrison's competetion.  There were about 14 kids at his mat, and it was the most competition he's ever experienced at one of these things.  He ended up coming in 3rd for forms.  He won his first sparring match, but lost his second because he kicked twice below the belt.  I didn't really blame him since the kid was about a head taller than he and kept doing these Karate Kid type jumps, but it does count as a deduction.

Annaleigh's competition followed.  I need to tell you that she has surprisingly taken to taekwondo like a duck takes to water.  She was nervous about it, but she did great!  She came in 1st place in forms.  She lost her first sparring match to another really aggressive girl, 5-4.

We are just so incredibly proud of both of them.  Not, mind you, because they won trophies, but because they both did their best and were good sports.  We look forward to many, many years of these types of events.  Maybe I'll take up knitting...

I keep laughing about imagining a shorter kid kicking a taller, jumping kid. (: Hmmmm---seems like a challenge not to hit below the belt. (:

I think anyone who sits week after week through any child's sports practices has the same dilemmas. You so hit the nail on the head. But it's all worth it when they do their best, isn't? Cudos to the kids on a job well done.
