I have decided I am going to have to blog about this vacation in parts. There are just too many pictures and experiences to try to cram into one long entry. So, to my family members, enjoy this trip down memory lane. To my non-family readers, I hope you can find something redeeming about my next few entries to keep you coming back. I hope you don't cross me off your blog-reading lists. Last Friday we hit the road, on our way to Georgia for a long weekend at our favorite cabins with part of my husband's family.
Our first stop was Susan's house, which happens to be only about 30 minutes from said cabins. They were gracious enough to let us crash their house for the night, and then we all caravanned to the cabins the next day. We got to meet our niece/cousin Gwyneth for the first time. She is fascinated with my kids, Harrison in particular, his hair in particular. I have tried to tell him it's getting too long. I think now he believes me. I am fascinated by Gwyneth's cheeks and roly-poly little legs and arms, which I think need to be squeezed... a lot.
Before we set off for the cabins the next day, someone had the marvelous idea of visiting Tallullah Gorge.
Here I am pointing to the warning sign before we head down and back up the over 1200 steps. Basically the fine print says that you shouldn't attempt this if you sit at the computer and blog more than you exercise, that you very well might die if you attempt it. But here we all go anyway...
And, yes, my insane sister-in-law did carry that munchkin Gwyneth the whole way, all 23 lbs. of her. I'm no scientist, but I think that may be why Susan has better looking calves than I do. I wasn't the only skeptical one...
The reason that people are willing to fare all of those steps is to see views like this:
I was too busy at this point just trying not to hurl my breakfast into the Gorge to enjoy the view. Here is Big D, pausing for a photo on the extension bridge. We had a pretty mild crossing. Susan says sometimes bratty kids like to stand on the ends and swing it so that it's difficult to keep your balance.
And then we were done. No pictures because I was too sweaty and disheveled for words at that point. Everyone else looked fine, but this is my blog, and I'm terribly vain about things like that. But we finished...all 1200 steps. Whew. And here are just a few snapshots of my kids being weird in their aunt and uncle's yard. Harrison, who had just gotten his pocket knife back after being grounded from it since May (don't ask why.....I'll just tell you it involved stupidity and blood), was so thrilled at having it back, that he was trimming their grass, one blade at a time.
And then Annaleigh found this little twig and pinecone that looked like a pipe, so what was she to do, but put it in her mouth and smoke it?
Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow when I tell you which one of these children finished their vacation with a cast on their arm...
Oooohhh, I'll bet the suspense is killing you! |
