Spider Deja Vu

{Sigh}....I really, really don't like spiders.
About a year ago, I blogged about a banana spider who set up residence right below our front porch. I wrote about how we named her Shelob, about how my kids were fascinated with her web, about how we used to experiment with her by throwing stuff on her web, about how she laid and partially hid her egg sac. Oh yes...it was quite the living science lesson and a beautiful example of humankind and bugdom coexisting in perfect harmony. If you'd like you can read all about this miracle that puts the story of Charlotte's Web to shame by clicking here. There is even an awe-inspiring photograph of our arachnid friend. I warn you, though, you will be humming "Kum-Bay-Yah" after reading this entry. You just won't be able to help it.
I also then wrote about the horror story that ensued and disrupted our idyllic little lives. I chronicled how Shelob ultimately betrayed and very nearly attacked us, about how she took advantage of our innocence and general naivete, about how she scared us nigh to death and made us all struggle with incontinence for about 3 days. You can read this horrific little tale here....but only if you dare.
About two weeks ago, I found what I am quite certain is one of Shelob's icky little spawn, seeing as how we never found and destroyed her egg sac, sitting on a web exactly where Shelob used to be. Reason would tell you that we would just squash the foul beast on the spot, wouldn't it? Of course, but you are not dealing with a very reasonable family. We have proceeded to get just as wrapped up in this spider's spidery little life as we did before, albeit with a bit more caution and a touch of distrust.
Why would we do this? Well, friend, I'm not really sure. Perhaps we are less freaked out because this spider is a good bit smaller than Shelob. Maybe we are feeling a bit sentimental about the arachnid race as a whole having just read and watched Charlotte's Web. Or maybe deep down we've missed Shelob all these months and the appearance of Spidey (what we've been calling this one) just made us feel complete. Perhaps we are just plain crazy.
I don't know, but what I do know is that a few days ago, Spidey turned up missing (insert "The Twilight Zone" music here). And then, lo and behold, a few days later, I find this attached to my living room window:

Spidey!!!! And guess what else?!

Spidey's spawn!!!! People we now have a front row seat for Spidey's life and times! We have only to get on our knees on the sofa, and ta-da!....our noses are a mere four inches from all the web action we could ever dream of! Here she is from the inside:

You can get on the phone and turn us into the funny farm if you want to, but unless she follows in the footsteps of her assumed mother and heads into our house, we're going to sit back and enjoy, sort of, this little bit of spooky nature. Pass the popcorn!

That is an awful looking spider !!! But I guess it is okay that it is outside :) We had one on our front living room window a while ago to and we would watch it wrap up flies that landed in its web but that is as friendly as I get. With the weather turning cool we have had a ton of those big huge hairy type ones coming in and I'm running around squishing them. No sympathy sorry... don't want to find one in my bed *grin*
Blessings,

I was in S. Carolina the 1st time I saw one of those.
I was a liitle freaked out by the size.
I'm ok about them now.
As long as they're further out.
Your Spidey is entirely too close to the living area.
She could pick up one of your kids.
Or even both. At the same time.

I think its wonderful that you are going to get to study her now, wow! We had one on our porch and we named it Charlotte but it wasn't near that big! I don't think we get those in this area, my dh is terrified of spiders, he would probably pass out! Thanks so stopping by my blog, hope you stop by again sometime.

That egg sac is huge! You've got to measure it and the spider for us! The actual spider must be huge too but it's hard to tell from here! lol I had to read your previous posts and I never thought of spraying a spider with WD-40! I had to stop my kids from doing their seatwork to hear and see the story! LOL
Blessings,
Laurie

Oh, yuck! I'm almost ready to disown you as my sister for keeping icky, yucky, scary things like that around your house! Here, spiders die, immediately!

Yikes! You are a good mother to let that stay on the window. All in the name of education.

Now see, you're still making us all laugh (and gag--not REALLY the size of a human hand???) Ack!
While in NC, we saw a moth, which I was chasing around (fruitlessly) to the delight of our 3yo. I was really getting deflated (I hate failing in front of bluntly honest small children who ask "Why?"), the moth kind of stopped flying in mid-air, fluttered a bit, and was still! This invisible spider web had gotten it for me! Yahoo! The moth struggled free a moment later, but I am a match for a wounded moth! Ha ! I got the bugger with a little help from my spidey....
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Yes, I kind of need a vacation after the vacation, but I'm getting better at prepping and recovering, since it seems that we will be travelling a lot with my husband's job, and I am finally on his bandwagon rather than trying to coax him onto mine... (:
Warmly,
Lori

Ok, I finally got my face unglued from my endless work to come over to see what in heaven's name is going on over here with your creature post and oh MY GOSH! I'd never sleep after looking at that thing! Where the heck are you living, so I can make sure I don't move there! Please don't say the Northeast because that would mean those are living here with me, in which case I will have to move...immediately! Enjoy your horror flick! I'm itching already, hahaha!

That's awesome and creepy at the same time! The pictures are fabulous. I think that is the most interesting web formation I have ever seen - it look a bit like a wind chime of sorts. Kind of wimsical...
The egg sac, however, is HUGE. That thing either contains the spider version of Andre the Giant or something that Alfred Hitchock would be proud of.
Love you ~

Ya know, I had heard that when Sting was at the repair smith for a chip in its blade, that the smith provided Frodo with some loaner WD40.
Too funny...too similar!... I will post my bird story from my old blog just for you.

Lol....I see why you could handle newborn minis in my house & alligators in the yard (We do patrol around the place looking for slides and such so our kids and guests stay safe.)....Anyone brave enough to take these pictures, could handle my house... I hate spiders even though my spouse just loves them..that works out well. Sort of a balance..,
As for the newborns, we usually bond with them the first day as we've found it makes for such nice pets.
My house is old and holds many memories, newborns are sweet so most have come in and taken a nap in someones arms.
Blessings,
Vicki
