Actually, I've always felt a bit cheated in the in-law department. My in-laws, which include his Mom and Dad, a brother, 3 sisters and all the spouses, are absolutely fantastic. I get along with them perfectly and consider them some of my best friends. Why, then, do I feel cheated? Because I can't relate to in-law jokes. I just don't get them, and apparently there are some pretty funny ones out there. I just feel a little incomplete. A couple of weeks ago we went to my in-laws to celebrate an early Thanksgiving/Christmas weekend. It was crazy. It was chaotic. It was cosmic. I just ran out of C words. It was opportune in that it gives me great material (and photos!!) to show just how much and why I love my in-laws.... 1. The opportunity to travel to distant, exotic lands. Well, okay....it was about 6 hours away in the mountains of North Carolina. But it is beautiful, and I do love going there, especially in the fall.
2. They are so patient and loving with my kids, which ends up making me look like a clod a lot of the times, but I'm still thankful that at least someone entertains them once in a while. They both LOVE to play games, and my conversation with them about this subject usually goes something like this...
And so on and so on...... So I'm always thankful (except for me looking like a clod in the eyes of my children) for aunts, uncles and grandparents who will play with them.
and play with them...
and play with them...
and play with them....
and play with them....
and buy jewelry from them (Annaleigh came home $60 richer...and that was with the family discount!!!)...
and build their complicated Lego sets with them (for 3 hours)...
and pull their gross, bloody teeth out of their heads AND give them tooth fairy money...
and, finally, they make sure they have enough gumballs to last them until they're 23 years old, and at the same time, give me many more opportunities to tell them "no," as in "No, you may not have another gumball. You have already had 12 today."
3. They like to eat...
and eat...
and eat.
4. They have provided some of the cutest little playmates for my kids. (AKA cousins)
5. They are always up for a good time. This time we made plans to go to the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC to see the National Gingerbread House contest. It's not easy to get nearly 17 people, including small children, to the same destinations, all in one piece, and still enjoying one another, but this family does it time and time again. Here's Harrison with a completely edible Black Pearl.
More entries...
and the overall winner...
6. We always leave their house (especially after the Christmas celebration) with more than we brought.
See? After a mere three days, we are barely able to shut our van for all the loot! 7. They let me have Big D. This guy...
is a healthy mix of....
and
and I love how he turned out! So, while I may not be able to come up with any great in-law jokes, I am all the more rich for a comfy second family. I am truly blessed. DID YOU SEE THE WREATH??? E-mail me at kellieann@adelgren.com for your points!! I have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for this entry. Wow...that actually took a few hours that time! |
