Flashback Friday: Pumi

Posted in Flashback Fridays

I am starting a new feature on my blog called "Flashback Friday".  The idea is to share something from my past or just the the past in general that I'd like to talk about.  Nostalgia can be an interesting subject, and Friday seemed like a good time to focus on that.  That's it.  No rules.  No guidelines.  I like it that way.  Feel free to join me if you'd like.  If I were smart and knew how to add that Mr. Linky thingy at the bottom of posts like this, I would.  But I am so totally not smart like that, so until 2010 when I might figure that out, just post a comment with your blog site at the bottom so others can visit your posts.  Eventually Big D, who is much smarter than me except at Scrabble, is going to create a cool graphic (complete with images of Rubik's Cubes and Ronald Reagan and legwarmers, etc.) that you can borrow if you'd like.  If you want to link back to me, fine.  If you don't, fine.  It's up to you.

OK, on with my flashback...

This is me with my Pumi.  He's the monkey.

I have no memory of the lamb.  Sorry lamb.  This picture was taken when I was about 3.  We were stationed in San Diego at the time, thus the palm trees in the background.

I got Pumi for my 1st birthday from my Grandma (who is sometimes referred to on this blog as Gigi because that's what mine and Debbles kids called her).  I'm not sure what it is about Pumi that made him more special than any of my other toys, but he was.  He and I were inseparable between the ages of 1 and about 6 or so.  After that I just slept with him....until I was 18 and got married.  I could have easily posted any number of about 200 or more pictures of me with Pumi.  We were that thick.

Now he sits (or sort of slumps) in an obscure corner of mine and Big D's bedroom.  I pick him up every couple of weeks and dust him off.  He's 34 now, which is much harder on a stuffed monkey than a human...thank goodness.

If I'm feeling sad or particularly sentimental, I still cuddle and talk to him a little.  But don't tell anyone that because it might make me seem a bit weird, and I'd just die if anyone ever thought I was weird.

We tried to recreate the tradition with Harrison.  Nearing his 1st birthday we found Pumi-like monkeys at Cracker Barrel, and Gigi bought him one, but as you can see, this Pumi clone was not loved as much as the original.

This fresh-faced, brightly colored fellow just didn't cut it in the "special department" with my son.

I hope you enjoyed this edition of my newly installed "Flashback Friday."  If not, you can have your money back....every cent of it.  Join in any time.  I'd love to be a part of your flashbacks.  (Now, somehow, that just doesn't sound right, but I think you know what I mean....)

I remember that monkey. I can't remember if I had one or my cousin had one. We were 2 months apart and spent a lot of time together. I may do this with you next week if my feeble mind remembers. I have a baby doll I could share. After that, it would get hard because I am such a purger, you know!
Jenn
Have a great weekend, btw

Kellie Ann, I will be back to read this later. I promise! But I wanted to be the first to invite you to read the most highly unusual Scattergories Tag blog entry you have ever read! Let's just say, the game itself was fun, but posting was not. I give up! lol
Blessings,
Laurie

I love the idea of 'Flashback Friday'! I might have to share with 'Show&Tell' Friday.
Your 'Pumi' is so cute!
My dd has a "teddy" that is her special friend. I never had one that was more special than the others. I loved them all and would've felt guilty picking a favourite! I don't know what that says about me...

What a fun idea! =D

I'll try to remember this Friday.

Isn't it funny how a kid will latch onto a certain thing and another wants nothing to do with it? =D

I had a monkey like that. He made me frustrated. He never, never, shared his banana. I even resorted to trying to pry it out of his fingers. They wouldn't budge. Sigh....
On a brighter note, my husband helped me figure out my problem...and I now have a sequential Scattergory on my blog. I can finally sleep tonight! lol
I love this flashback Friday. I'm already doing Sew Crafty, but I really like your idea too. I don't have a scanner, but I guess I could take a picture of old photos???? I'll have to try that.
BTW, did you mention you wanted a bath doohickery rack, shelf) like I have? LOL You can tell I'm really with it. Anyway, my husband got that at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Just be careful. I thought I was. After I got out of the tub, the rack fell into the bubble bath water and my book got soaked. =( It is really sturdy. But when I slid it down for me to get out, I didn't pay attention to how sturdy it should be. The handles are adjustable for any width tub.
Blessings,
Laurie

I still have my doll from my childhood which I posted about way back on May 1, 2007 (post title "A Doll Story") She's 39 now. I remember seeing those monkeys when I was little. How very loved he looks.
I would love to participate in this with you. I may have to switch between Crafty Friday and Flashback Fridays. Very fun idea.

I had LuLu. Not the LuLu of the comic strip.

This was a doll my mother sewed for my in third grade - so it is now 40 yrs old. I loved that doll. She sewed it from a pattern - big black eyes - blond yarn hair -every single yarn sewn down in place. Pretty blue dress and black felt, high button shoes. Oh, she was great. I still have her - but she has many scars from being worn our and torn and my little fingers sewing her up.

I've looked and looked for another LuLu doll kit to make for my Blondie. (who am I kidding - it would be for me) but I would still keep old LuLu.

I have a bear. He's a little younger 27...named Rufus (after the man who took care of me as a baby, who also gave me the bear) I slept with him all my life too...(okay he slept with me again last week when my dog died....you aren't alone or weird!!) His arm has been sewed on twice, stiches on his head, half his nose is gone....which reminds me....his arm is about to come off again....
Thanks for sharing

Ah, good ol' Pumi. Nostalgia is good. My pillow (whose name will not be shared) is in a box in my closet. Velveteen pillows do not fare as well as stuffed monkeys and if I left it out it might get mistaken for a rag or a dog chew toy, so it must be put away. Funny that both of our "loveys" came from G'ma in one way or another.
