Flashback Friday: If You Were a Little Girl in the 70s...

Posted in Flashback Fridays

A few weeks ago my sister-in-law Rebecca sent this to me in an e-mail.  I was saving it for a Friday when I was busy, so I could do an easy Flashback post.  This is that Friday.  I also wanted to post something like this to show all of you that you can participate in my Flashbacks without photos from your past (I "borrowed" all the ones you'll see here....except the one of Annaleigh).  Just tell us a story or reminisce or share a Youtube video of your favorite song (trust me...it's on there).

Enjoy this list of 70s pop culture (my responses are in red...as if you couldn't figure that out):

You had that Fisher Price Doctor's Kit with a stethoscope that actually worked.

Yes....and several years ago I bought one for Annaleigh for $5 at Wal-mart.  A good toy is a good toy, no matter the year.

You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a plastic basket with flowers on it.

Mine was yellow.

You learned to skate with actual skates (not roller blades) that had metal wheels.

I'm not sure that you could call what I did 'learn' because I never was really good, but my first pair did have metal wheels.

You thought Gopher from Love Boat was cute (admit it!)

Oh alright....I did!

You had nightmares after watching Fantasy Island .

Of the very worst variety.  That show was creepier than the Halloween movies.

You had either a 'bowl cut' or 'pixie', not to mention the 'Dorothy Hamill'.

No, never.  I always had long hair as a little girl....well, really most of my life.

People sometimes thought you were a boy.

Again, no.

You had rubber boots for rainy days and Moon boots for snowy days.

I have never owned rain boots, but I did have a pair of snow boots in Chicago.  I'm really not sure if they were moon boots though.  They were white with fur in them.

YEAH! You owned a 'Slip-n-Slide', on which you injured yourself on a sprinkler head more than once.

I can't remember owning one, but I remember making one at a friend's house out of garbage bags.  I don't think I was injured.

You owned 'Klick-Klacks' and smacked yourself in the face more than once !

I honestly don't even know what these are.

Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession.

I didn't have the sleeping bag, but I always enjoyed my Colorform set.

You wore a poncho, gauchos, and knickers.

No, yes, yes.

You begged Santa for the electronic game, Simon.

I don't think we ever had this game, but I have a very distinct memory of playing it at school.

You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple  satiny shredded outfits, or the sunshine family.

Not the dolls, but I did have the paper dolls.  I also had the Marcia and Greg Brady paper dolls.

You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze.  The swing set tipped over at least once.

Yes and yes.  To my parents' credit, they did eventually chain ours down.

You had homemade ribbon barrettes in every imaginable color. (Oh  yeah!)

Yes!

You had a pair of Doctor Scholl's sandals (the ones with hard sole  & the buckle). You also had a pair of salt-water sandals.

Yes, my Dr. Scholl's were white.

You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad; you wore that  Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck in at least one school picture;  and you despised Nellie Oleson!

Definitely!  We are watching this series on DVD with our kids now, and they love it too.  Annaleigh really looks like Melissa Gilbert. See...

You wanted your first kiss to be at a roller rink!

No, I never even considered this because of my aversion to skating.

PONG! ('video tennis' ) was the most remarkable futuristic game you've ever heard of !

We didn't really jump on the video game scene until Pacman was popular.  We had that and Frogger for our Atari system and thought that life was just perfect.

Your hairstyle was described as having 'wings' or 'feathers' and you kept it 'pretty' with the comb you kept in your back pocket. When you walked, the 'wings' flapped up and down, looked like you were gonna 'take off'

I was a regular Charlie's Angel.

You know who Strawberry Shortcake is, as well as her friends,  Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie.

Yes, but weren't these more 80s than 70s?  I remember them because my sister had the dolls.

You carried a Muppets lunch box to school and it was metal, not  plastic. With the thermos inside some were glass inside and broke the first time you dropped them.

The lunchbox I remember was metal, but it was Charlie Brown, and my thermos was plastic.

You and your girlfriends would fight over which of the Dukes of Hazzard was your boyfriend.

I was a John Schneider (Bo) girl myself.  I used to write him fan letters.

YOU had Star Wars action figures, too!

I didn't have the action figures, but I did have a Princess Leia barbie doll.  I saw this same doll in an antique store recently, and they had her labeled "nun doll."

It was a big event in your household each year when the 'Wizard of Oz' would come on TV. Your mom would break out the popcorn and sleeping bags!

Not sure about the sleeping bags, but it was definitely an event.  So was The Ten Commandments.

You often asked your Magic-8 ball the question: 'Who will I marry. Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, or David Cassidy?'

I didn't have to ask.  I just knew it was going to be Shaun.....or John Travolta.

You completely wore out your Grease, Saturday Night Fever, and Fame soundtrack record album.

"You're the one that I want!  Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey!"

"Fame!  I'm gonna' live forever!  I'm gonna' learn how to fly....HIGH!"

"Uh, uh, uh, uh, stayin' alive!  Stayin' alive."

Does that answer your question?

You tried to do lots of arts and crafts, like yarn and Popsicle-stick God's eyes, decoupage,or those weird potholders made on a plastic loom.

Yes, no, yes.

You made Shrinky-Dinks and put iron-on kittens on your t-shirts!

Yes and yes.

You used to tape record songs off the radio by holding your portable tape player up to the speaker.

Yes.

You had subscriptions to Dynamite and Tiger Beat.

No subscriptions, but I bought them off the stands.  Bop too.

You learned everything you needed to know about girl issues from Judy Blume books. (Are you there God, It's Me, Margaret.)

....and Deenie, and Blubber, and  Then Again, Maybe I Won't.

You thought Olivia Newton John's song 'Physical' was about aerobics. (?? its not??)

Of course.  Three friends and I did a whole exercise routine to this song in fourth grade for the talent show.  We had this really cool move where we slid our jump ropes backwards under our legs when we were finished with them, and then we went straight into our jumping jacks.  We didn't win.

You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with heart or rainbow designs.

Absolutely.  Did anyone ever wear the decorative shoelaces in their hair...in a side ponytail?

You wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer.

More than anything.

You drowned yourself in Love's Baby Soft - which was the first 'real' perfume you ever owned.

Yes, and I just bought some for Annaleigh for Christmas.

You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip-gloss till it almost dripped off.

Yes, and whatever happened to that roll-on lip-gloss?

So what do you remember from your childhood?  Join me and let me know all about it!

(My first one needs to get deleted. I put the wrong one on.... can you delete it?)

I enjoyed your HUGE flashback. I had klick-klacks. I think I had them in 7th grade hmmm.....1972? We ALL had them - and we would get them going and it made a marvelous racket. We brought them to school and during breaks played with them.

There were a couple of injuries. The school banned them. The hallways got quiet again.

But it was fun.

WOW!!! Yes to all of it!! Great post :) I did have Donnie and Marie dolls ( I just posted about them!) and metal skates...and I totally forgot about those clips with the ribbons.... My room was plastered with John Schneider pics and I was devastated when he married a news woman instead of 10 year old me! Yeah I liked gopher and Dominic from SWAT. My sister liked the Bay City Rollers!... and I loved watching the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, they were so smart.?? Remember Bj and the Bear or the Ghost and Mrs. Muir? I am so borrowing your list, with proper credit of course!

well, I am a little older, but,
*yes to the Pixie. Yuck. In 7th grade. The only time in my life I let anyone cut my hair short. My Mum thought it was wonderful. I knew better.

*and how did you miss Klik Klaks? they are little round balls (what other kind of balls would they be) 2 of them, hard, on a string like a yoyo and if you can control them they make a lot of racket and are dangerous enough they were banned in our school. I never had any because my Mum is a cautious woman.

*I bought my own Simon as an adult, on the excuse that it is a good memory building tool for my special needs kiddos. Not sure about that, but it *is* fun.

Oh, memories! I loved my Shrinky Dinks and Strawberry Shortcake collection. I think that you were correct in saying that Strawberry Shortcake was more of an eighties thing. And, I'll admit that I sometimes tied my side-of-the-head ponytail with shoelaces! lol

I was born in 1975 and that post brought back sooooooo many memories. Too funny. I can't believe how much your daughter looks like Melissa Gilbert. Oh how I wanted her hair. Unfortunately, my mom was a hair dresser and I spent much of my childhood growing out the Dorothy Hamill and pixie cuts.

Toooooo funny!

I remember all of those things and more and could probably answer yes to just about every one of them except the roller skates one. We had the kind that you put on over your shoes and they adjusted to your foot size. And those wings...I can't seem to get them out of my hair even today without a straightening iron. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
