Flashback Friday: My Favorite Childhood Movies

Posted in Flashback Fridays

As summer approaches it finds me thinking more and more about movies.  We subscribe to Netflix, and through the school year we use it mainly to get films that supplement our history and science studies.  The summer, however, is a different story.  We order all kinds of fun films that we missed in the theaters or that I remember fondly from my own childhood.  I decided for today to narrow down my favorites to my "Top Ten," so here they are....

10.

I loved all Disney movies really, and a couple of others will undoubtedly make this list, but this one was especially memorable for me.  I vaguely remember seeing this in the theater, and as a matter of fact, its sequel, The Rescuers Down Under , was the first movie that Big D took me to see.

9.

C'mon....who didn't like ET?  I remember this movie sparking clever Halloween costumes, a renewed interest in Reese's Pieces candy, and numerous "phone home" jokes and quips.

8.

I loved the Muppet Show and all the movies, but this was my favorite.  I love Charles Grodin in it, and the scene where Miss Piggy breaks into the mansion and pretends that it's her home still makes me laugh today.

7.

I'll bet this is on almost everyone's list...unless the Wicked Witch scared you to death.  I always anxiously awaited when this would come on television every year.  It was quite an event at our house.

6.

Admittedly, this is kind of a strange movie, and after watching it with my kids a few years ago, I didn't like it nearly as well as when I was ten.  But in 1982, I was a certified unicorn fanatic, and I thought this movie was the best thing since sliced bread.

5.

When I was little, I was kind of a monster movie freak.  I liked Godzilla, mummies, werewolves, Frankenstein...you name it.  Weird, I know, but it was my childhood and I'm kinda fond of it.  Well, I LOVED King Kong the most.  When I was really small, like three or so, I really liked the old B&W movie, starring Faye Wray, but when the above film with Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges was released when I was about six, it stole my little heart.  And, just for the record, I don't like the most recent King Kong film much at all.

4.

I have to include the whole original trilogy for this one, but I think, if I had to choose, the last one, Return of the Jedi , is my favorite.  The newer ones were a bit of a disappointment to me, but I've enjoyed seeing them with my kids, who love them all.

3.

This, to me, was the ultimate of Disney princess movies, to be rivaled in modern times only by Beauty and the Beast.  Everything about this movie is so perfect, from the music to the fairies to Malificent.  It's just all-around great and timeless!

2.

I remember when my parents saw this for their anniversary the year it was released and them coming home just raving about it.  I couldn't wait to see it on video, and it did not disappoint.  It became a favorite that I could watch over and over and never tire of.  I liked the other ones as well, but this one was my favorite.  Oh, and just for fun, here's a favorite quick clip....

1.

Does it get any better than this?  I'd have to say that this would go on my list of favorite movies of all time and not just childhood.  It has to be the best sing-along movie ever!

So, what are some of your favorite films from yesteryear?  Leave me a comment and let me know if I forgot a great one.  Also feel free to join me in a flashback of your own.  Sign Mr. Linky below, so everyone can come reminisce with you!

I just adore Mary Poppins, still. And my kids are gigantic Star Wars fans. I remember going to see number 6 when it came out, but I was not that excited about it. I like it more now. I am with you, the newer ones are lacking. And as for Brooke, I knew she wasn't the Idol, so I was preparing myself each week for the end. I thought Jason would go before her after his week! Syesha (sp?) has stage presence, at least, but she is not the Idol either. Looks like one of the Davids will rule.

How about Escape from Witch Mountain? I love that one. Or The Apple Dumpling Gang? My kids love those. They also love watching Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons. They were amazed that the Waltons didn't have any tv.

You always have great ideas for Flashback Fridays. The only one on your list I have't seen is The Last Unicorn. Wonder how I missed that one? I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to put this idea in the back of my mind for a later post. Thanks. You're always so clever. Hope you are feeling well and that baby and you are fine.
Blessings,
Ginny

Some of those I've never seen. I never saw The Rescuers until I bought it for my dc and they loved it. They never liked Mary Poppins. I liked the Wizard of Oz and waited for it to come on tv every year too. I watched it once with my kids and my poor ds was scared out of his wits. He has banned it from the house. I liked Star Wars and have gotten the new ones for dh's birthday. I haven't seen them yet but plan on a Star Wars watching this summer...all 6. Although I like Indiana Jones and have referred to them numerous times in our studies...it scares me and the kids. But those writers knew their history. As I've deeply studied history through TOG with the kids, I am amazed at how those movies had the history and culture down pat. If only I can work up the nerve to endure all those scary scenes. =)
Blessings,
Laurie

I have vivid memories of seeing The Rescuers in the theater! My cousins were visiting from Michigan at the time and we all went together.

I am one that hates (absolutely loathes and detests) The Wizard of Oz and yes, it's because the wicked witch scared me. I still can't watch it to this day.

Mary Poppins...I still love that movie...I am waiting for my kids to get old enough to want to see some of these....they loved Mary Poppins though, and the Rescuers. My oldest I think may be to tender hearted still for E.T he cries at the Cars movie when the friends get seperated!!

Those are some good picks. The Wizard of Oz wouldn't be on my list, though, because I was terrified of the witch as a kid. Now, I'm just tired of all the Kansas jokes. But it IS true, there's no place like home. :)

Lemme see...

My Fair Lady is on my list for sure. Beauty and the Beast is my #1 Disney, but my 1 and 2 spots would be taken by Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. By far and away my favorite movies from my youth.

Oh, and Oz is on my list of most hated movies of all time. It's right up there with Alice in Wonderland. I get the crawlies just thinking about them. Any movies that dealt with the surreal were no good for me - I think it was too much for my imagination!!

I remember a lot of those! We can't be that far apart in age. ;') I think that clip from Indiana Jones was a favorite for me, too. Star Wars, of course, is one of the first movies I remember in a theater. My parents usually opted for the drive-in when we were really little. There were several movies I remember from back then: The Shaggy Dog, Ben and I, The Absent-Minded Professor, and a few other really great flicks.

May. 6, 2008 - Do we really know Mary?

First I apologize for being absent on Flashback Friday. Had some icky stuff to deal with.

Secondly, I stated earlier we used to build a professional haunt, so I do have a tendency for the creepy. Naturally I would come across what Mary Poppins was really like...don't let her sweet demeanor fool you....

LOL Have a great week :-) (I loved your kid's park preferences!)
