Aug. 2, 2007 - Our Own VBS

This morning Kade woke up vomiting, so it further confirmed that we shouldn't have gone to VBS this week.  Everyone was fine yesterday and it is a fairly short-lived bug, so that is good.  I'm sure Kade will be fine tomorrow.  Cale still hasn't had it.

.

We have been doing our own little VBS at home this week.  This is not because i have so much energy and creativity brimming over that i must give it an outlet!  Rather, the boys have been looking forward to VBS all summer and were so disappointed that we decided not to take them due to this stomach bug.  I also felt that this is a good opportunity for me to tie heartstrings with the boys.  It seems we've been doing so much schoolwork and working so hard to keep the house picked up this summer that we needed to have fun together and also focus on God's Word more as a family.

As i said before, i had picked up a VBS curriculum last year for really super cheap on clearance and it's just been sitting on my shelf, so it has been fairly easy to adapt it to our family this week.  I never intended to use it as a VBS program, but it sure has come in handy this week!

So, here's a peek into our week...............

Our themes are different for each day this week.  They include:  a Mayan Jungle, a Medieval Castle, an Ancient Laboratory of an Alchemist, an Indian Village, and the Hawaiian Islands.

.

Each day focuses on a couple of the Ten Commandments and has it's own Bible passage.  We've acted out skits together, done puppets, and taken turns reading the Bible passages.

We've also had memory verses to work on each day.  Today i cut up the verse into a big puzzle for them to put together.  Other days we've had the words written on construction paper cards or shapes and either raced to put them together or worked on turning over a couple of cards at a time until we could say the whole verse with the cards all upside down.

.

This week's Bible passages include:  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; Jesus healing on the Sabbath; Jesus in the temple as a boy; the Good Samaritan; and Naboth's vineyard

We've eaten fun snacks each day, which the boys have really looked forward to.  On the menu:

.

Bugs on a Log........halved bananas with strawberry cream cheese and raisins

Fruit Skewers/Javelins........skewered bananas, grapes, apples, cheese

Chemist's Concoction.......Jello with whipped cream and skittles

Goldfish crackers

.

We've also played some fun games this week............

We stacked up boxes for an idol and took turns throwing a ball at it to make it fall down.

We threw q-tip javelins into bowls containing the names of God.....get out a name when you get the javelin in the bowl

We held a towel on one side of a "wall" while the others threw balls over the wall.  Those holding the towel had to work together to "catch" the balls and lob them back over the wall using the towel.......this was really fun!

We did a race between Respect and Disrespect.  They had to run to different stations when i read scenarios to tell whether it was respectful or disrespectful.

Bean Bag toss to learn ways to treat others with kindness

A Volcano eruption.......mom holds bucket or basket while kids throw soft balls or wads of paper up into the basket.  The volcano occasionally "erupts" dumping everything out on the kids and they have to start over.

.

And of course we have done crafts this week.......we hardly ever do crafts around here, so they've really enjoyed this...............

marbelized stationery for each child

tropical sun-catchers

foam medieval castles from a kit on clearance at Michaels

Chemist's suspension dough

a volcanic eruption

seashell photo frames

.

There are also little journals they have worked on each day that came with the book.  It reinforces the verses and lessons with fun puzzles/activities.  And we've learned a new song each day about the different Ten Commandments from the CD that came in the kit.  They've enjoyed the music, too.

Here's some photos from our week:

 Castle Craft

In the fiery furnace

Working on a memory verse with banana shape cards

Bugs on a Log........a yummy snack we will do again!

What a grea VBS. I am sorry about the bug. If it is the one we had, it is short lived and somewhat gentle to the kids but can really slam the grownups, so my prayers are that you stay well.

I love the castles. They all look like they are having the best time.

Because of Jesus, Bobbie
